Santa Paws
Well, it finally happened. Saxon and I had only been together for two years before she fell in love with another woman. The fact that the other woman had four legs and fur all over her body only made it more humiliating.
Darla Sue, my mutt dog, was the other woman. I can’t say I’m surprised. I saw it coming. In hindsight there were plenty of red flags. Saxon would give her half her bacon, let her lick from her ice cream cone, whisper sweet nothings in her ear, and she even dedicated her last b...

The Great White (mouse) Hunter
Yesterday, Saxon and I were talking on the phone while she was at work. Here is the conversation, verbatim, no matter what Saxon tells you:
Layce: So then Deepak said Dharma was when you followed your special talent. Dharma is –
Saxon: — Is this the same Dharma that was married to Greg?
Layce: Shut up and listen. So Dharma is when – Oh my God!
Saxon: What? What? Are you okay? What happened?
Layce: It was a mouse! A mouse just ran across the living room floor.
Saxon: Where is he now?
Layce: I don’t k...

Heaven Is Pink
My daughter lived in Heaven before she was born. I know this to be true because she told me so. She was around four years old when she started telling me what Heaven was really like. She told me enough that I actually began to think she wasn’t making it up. Maybe she really did live there. Maybe she really did remember.
Here, in no particular order, are the things she told me about her life in Heaven:
Heaven is pink. But it can be any color you want. You can see pink, blink your eyes and then i...

PLOG – a Photo Journal of Dallas Book Club
This is a Plog (a photo blog) of the Jewel Dallas Lesfic Book Club. Saxon and I were the guest authors on Tuesday evening. This is what happens when you hand your camera to a twelve year old (My crazy daughter, Emma) and ask her to take pictures for your blog. I am not going towrite captionsbecause I believe the pictures speak for themselves and I’ll just get mad all over again.

Zip It!
On Saturday, Saxon, Emma and I took off for Branson, Missouri to the Ozark Canopy Zipline Tour. (Extreme vacations are a part of my grand scheme to overcome my phobias and not feel like I’m 50 years-old.)
At seven a.m. we loaded into the car for the three hour drive. This time I had planned ahead and outfitted Emma with electronics all charged up and a brand-new pair of earbuds. We drove for an hour in blissful silence until Emma took off her earbuds and piped up, “So which would you rather be...

The Bluebird of Happiness
On Labor Day we took off for another Family Adventure. This time we decided to drive to Terra Studios in Arkansas. It’s just south of Fayetteville, maybe an hour and a half away. Terra Studios is world-renowned as the home of “The Bluebird of Happiness.” They make blown glass bluebird figurines and have an artist’s colony on the massive grounds. I went there once before with Emma and her Girl Scout troop and we wereboth excited to show it to Saxon.
We were in the car about to back out of the d...

You Only Turn Twelve Once
Last Friday was my daughter Emma’stwelfthbirthday. Saxon took the day off work so we could celebrate as a family. The day began by eating birthday cake for breakfast. Emma designed the cake herself. She took a photo of one of her paintings (our house is decorated in Emma’s cool artwork) and Walmart duplicated it onto a cake. It was not only beautiful but it tasted good, too. After the cake we inhaled helium from balloons and sang “Sweet Home, Alabama.”
Next, we changed into our bathing suits,...
