Done By December | Special Guest Ingunn Markiewicz
Happy December Daily® season, everyone!
December Daily® is my favorite scrapbooking project (okay, maybe except for travel albums), but I will admit that I tend to start off super motivated and then just sort of…fizzle out as we get closer to Christmas Eve. I’ve participated in this wonderful project every year since 2015, but so far I’ve only completed three of my albums. I hope and dream that I will finish all of them at some point, and I hereby pledge, in front of all of you fine members of the Ali Edwards community, that I will finish my 2021 December Daily® album before December 2022.
Here's what I have so far:
Okay, so I have 9 pages done, out of what I’m planning will be a total of 27 (24 days of Christmas + intro + post-Christmas snow event + outro). That leaves 18 days. *nervous laughter*
In order to not feel completely panicked and overwhelmed by this, I’ve decided that I need some structure to this process. After some thinking & looking through what I have left of the 2021 December Daily® collection, I’ve decided on the following plan of action:
At least three pages using the template I had set up last December At least three scraplifts of pages in my inspiration folderThree pages using the glitter phrasesThree pages using the red pocketsThree pages using the In a Creative Bubble cards I fell in love with
There might be some overlap in these pages, but this plan of action should have me well on my way to completing my album. Rah rah rah! Also, can you tell that I love the number three?
Now, onto a mindset change. I mentioned earlier that my motivation tends to fizzle out as we get closer to Christmas, and while this is natural for many reasons, I have come to realize that for me, this is mostly due to impostor syndrome. I was on Ali’s Creative Team from 2016-2021, but that didn’t stop me from feeling like my pages were too boring and simple every December when far more creative community members would post their gorgeous, interactive showstoppers every single day. But you know what? My style is simple, and that is totally okay. So for this project, I am going to try to follow the mantra that Ali let slip during a December Daily Instagram Live this year (and which I still hope will be available as a motivational poster): “Stick that shit down and move on.” Instead of moving embellishments around for 20 minutes and wondering if I should add more stuff, I’m going to trust my initial instinct. When my daughter looks through my albums, she spends all her time looking at the photos and reading every single word of journaling, and exactly zero seconds commenting on my design choices (unless I’ve included a particularly adorable bear somewhere on the page), and that’s what matters to me right now. At some point in the future, I might have the time and motivation to be more fancy and get my creative life fulfilled through that, but for now I just want the stories told and my album done.
If you’re still hanging in there through this blog post, thank you! I just want to end with three (of course there are three) final things I did to get myself ready and motivated.
Thankfully I had kept a Word document on my laptop last year full of notes from December and plans I had for the different days of the album. The notes are somewhat chaotic, but I printed them out so that I can use it as a home for my sketches and ideas as I work my way through this project.I went through my products from previous years and only kept what I can truly see myself using. Given my simple scrapbook style, having a huge stash makes me feel overwhelmed FAST. Bonus: going through my products again reminded me of things I really want to use, like those glitter phrases.I went through a big box full of memorabilia from last December and divided it into four piles: holiday cards and postage stamps // kid art and letters to Santa // memorabilia from specific days (for example restaurant menus) // cute things I had collected that can go anywhere in the album. I find that the further removed I am from an event, I’m less likely to feel like including memorabilia, but at least it’s now easily accessible, and going through it made me remember some random little details from December!
Thank you so much for hanging in there through this post, and I hope some of it was helpful for anyone else who might be feeling a little overwhelmed at the thought of catching up on such a huge project!
I’ll be posting updates on my Instagram account as I complete my pages, and will come back here to show you the finished product once I’m done! Let’s do this, #donebydecember friends!!

December Daily® 2022 | Crafting With Krystal 04
Hi friends! Krystal here, back again with a recap of my next Crafting Life with Krystal - December Daily Edition recap!
This mini-series is composed of a weekly Live video on the December Daily Facebook Group. This live event takes place each Thursday at 12PM ET throughout the month of September.
This week, our product topic was embellishments, papers, and stickers. If you missed the video this week, you can check that out below.
LET’S RECAPIn today’s video, we discussed different ways to use the various shop products (embellishments, papers, & stickers) for a wide variety of page designs. Let’s go through each product individually and talk about design ideas.
My hope is to give you ideas that you can translate into your own projects this year - helping you to love + use all the beautiful components of the 2022 December Daily collection.
1. 3X8 JOURNAL CARD SET
The 3x8 Journal Card & Transparency Set includes a set of eighteen 3”x8” journaling cards. The cards come pre-punched to easily add them into any 6-ring binder… but can be used in a ton of different ways beyond that! Here are some ideas for how to incorporate these 3”x8” journal cards into your album this year:
Turn the 3x8 cards into a full page design by attaching (adhering with tape OR stitching) a photo to the edge of the journaling card. Add a 7x8.25 photo to create a 10x8 page OR add a 3x8.25 photo to create a 6x8 page. Trim the sentiment cards down to create additional 3x4 journaling cards.
Use a 2” circle punch to punch out the five cards with trees/sentiments. Use these as a repeat element, journal on the bottom section, or create layered embellishments. Use the repeated patterns (stars, stripes) on the bottom section of journaling cards that are then turned into a waterfall element. Or, use them on multiple cards to make everything look cohesive on the page.
2. TRANSPARENCIES
In the 2022 December Daily collection, you can find transparencies in all different sizes. You can find 3x8 transparencies in the 3x8 Journal Card & Transparency Set, 4x4 and 6x4 sizes in the Transparency Journal Card Set, and the 6x8 size in the 6x8 Transparency Set. Here are some ideas for how to use these different transparencies this year:
Create a Peek-a-Boo effect using the 6x8 wreath transparency. Add journaling behind the six wreaths and back the journaling with a photo - both cut into a circle shape. You will get a peek at the next page/story in the transparent space around the wreaths. Add a clock face (image, cut file, embellishment) to the 3x8 frame transparency. Use the bottom section to add in journaling. Layer transparencies on top of tags (black or white) to create more design. Fussy cut small images from transparencies (santas, frames, wreaths, etc.) and use as an embellishment OR to create confetti for shaker pockets.
Punch transparencies into 2-3” circles. Cut the circles in half and stitch the bottom half to a patterned paper, only around the curve. Add an embellishment on top of the transparent half circle and store anything you like into the pocket (ephemera, tags, photos, journaling, etc.). Cut transparencies down to 3.5x2 rectangles and stitch around sides + bottom to a page. These become pockets for storing 3x4 journaling cards/photos. Embellish for added interest or add numbers/titles to top of pockets. Fussy cut the transparent trees from the 3x8 and 6x8 sets. Combine with other transparent trees for more options.
3. FELT PRESENTS
Next up are the felt presents. These embellishments are super fun to play with and bring such a cool dimensional/textured look to a page. Eight presents are included in the pack, with varying sizes and colors. Here are a few ideas for how to use these on your layouts this season:
Add the felt presents (along with a number) on top of a 6x4 transparency. Adhere to the top of a photo/journaling card using washi tape and create a flip up element. Create separated lists using the gifts as the column toppers. Could be a great way to document wish lists or shopping lists for the season. Add as an embellishment to a layered tag for more texture.
Create a collage using the felt presents, stamped presents, present die cuts, vellum present tag, photos, and/or wrapping paper samples. Layer the felt presents into a pile on a page. Add title/journaling around the outside of the gift pile. Add a brad into the bow portion of the felt gift. The present could swivel to reveal hidden journaling/photos.
4. PAINTED WOOD VENEER PACK
The Painted Wood Veneer Pack is another awesome product for including different material/texture in your layouts. Adding wood to your projects is a great way to help ground the page and give it a natural feel. The icons/drawings in the pack this year are darling and can be used in a lot of different ways. Here are some ideas for how to use the wood veneer in your projects this year:
5. RUBBER SHIPPING TAGS
Rubber is a texture I’m super happy to see back again this year. I really love how vibrant and detailed these pieces are. While the Rubber Tags are dimensional and I would caution against adhering directly on top of a photo, I do have a ton of ideas for how you can use these beautiful pieces this year. Here are some ideas:
6. DIMENSIONAL PUFFY SANTAS
These Dimensional Puffy Santas are so super cute! I love how they can add to a page as an embellishment or serve as the main feature. Here are some ideas of what you can do with these:
7. STICKER SETS
The 2022 December Daily collection includes a few different sets of stickers; including Puffy Number Stickers, Circle Label Stickers, Woodland Puffy Stickers, and more. Here are a few ideas for page designs including these stickers:
8. STITCHED HEART POCKETS
The Stitched Heart Pockets make such a statement on a photo/page. I love the variety of stories these can help tell and can’t wait to have a page featuring one of these in my album this year. Here are a bunch of ways you could think about using these pockets in your own album:
Add 2-4 onto a single page to create a collage look - add on transparency and print/cut heart shaped photos to adhere to the backside of heart pockets. Combine all heart pockets, along with heart shaped photos - made to fit on the backside of hearts, to create a mini book of memories for the season. (Could make a really great gift for a loved one.)
CONCLUSION
One of the things I love most about many of the shop products in the 2022 December Daily collection is the ability to add in different textures, materials, patterns, and more to my album. I’m especially excited to use those tiny dimensional santas and the stitched heart pockets from today’s video, and can’t wait to see what other ideas surface from our community over the next few months. Is there an add on that you are excited about using this year?
Today, I want to leave you with a challenge to help you think ahead about how you want to use some of the shop products/add ons you put into your December Daily box this year: Take one of the ideas presented in today's video/blog post and create a page sketch idea of your own. Store this with your December Daily supplies to pull out when your products arrive OR when you are documenting your December memories this winter.
I’m going to be back in the December Daily Facebook Group one last time this coming Thursday 9/29/22. I hope you’ll join me live at 12PM! (The video will be recorded and I will include a blog post as well recapping our live session.)
Until then friends, have a great day!

Done By December Kick-Off | Special Guest Jess Forster
Raise your hand if you have an unfinished December Daily® album? Keep that hand up if you’d like some company and motivation to help you wrap it up! Today, we're excited to welcome Creative Team alum and community member Jess Forster to kick off this year's Done By December community challenge. In the weeks ahead we'll have several of our Brand Ambassadors feature here and on our December Daily® Instagram account sharing their strategy and progress towards a completed album. Also, join us tomorrow, Friday September 22nd at 1:30pm ET for a live chat with Jess, Ali, and Lisa all about the project, their tips and tricks for getting it done, and what they've learned over the years. Can’t join us live? Don’t worry! Our conversation will be recorded and available over at @decemberdaily.
Let's welcome Jess!
Hi crafty friends, it’s Jess Forster here and I am so pleased to welcome you to Done by December, 2022 edition! This paper crafting challenge is a community run initiative is designed to encourage others to work on our previous incomplete December Daily® albums leading up the first of December or the beginning of the new DD documenting period. All are invited to work on their projects, no matter how much you have completed. Set a goal to finish your album or to finish a couple of pages - the choice is yours. Feel free to play along and cheer each other along the way!
Why you participate in December Daily®?
To me, December Daily is not only a fun crafty project, but an invitation to establish and document personal joys and magic in holiday celebrations. It has encouraged me to establish holiday traditions for my family and serves as a reminder to be present in the season. It’s also super fun to play with pretty holiday products! I also love seeing how crafty our community gets during this time of year; I marvel at all the ideas and inspiration. It’s also the time I drink my morning coffee and read Ali’s blog consistently each day.
Where you are in your documenting?
For this year, I am working on my 2018 December Daily album. This is the year, my family and I spent the first week of December at Disney world, Florida and the last part of the month in Toronto. As such my album is divided into two different sections:
1. A 3x8 travel’s notebook highlighting our Disney trip
2. 6x8 pocket page album, with one double page spread per day
As you can see from the photos, I have many incomplete spreads. Some days I have only words but no photos or embellishments. Other days, it’s the opposite: have the photos, cards and embellishments but no words. This album includes stories of travel, everyday life as well as Christmas moments. It’s a little bit of everything with nothing really completed! Ha!
What is your strategy/plan is for completion?
Great question! I like to keep track of how much time I have to dedicate to the project and break the project down into manageable tasks. Fun fact: there are 11 Thursdays before December 1st.
I made a list of each day in my album. On that list I have included whether the project is complete or incomplete and what I need to do finish the page. From there I will start with the easiest task to complete. For me, it’s selecting photos + printing. Since the story will inform my photo choice, I will give myself approximately, 4-6 weeks to finish this task.
From there I like to keep my goals and options open. In November I always like to work on the upcoming December Daily project, setting up my album and thinking about my goals or focus. This year, if I print all my photos for my 2018 album, I will be happy. The key for me, is not to shame or blame myself in the process, but to try to keep my expectations realistic and enjoy reliving the moments and memories along the way. If finish my album, I will be ecstatic! If I move the DD project forward, closer to be finishing, I will also be happy and proud of myself. This scrappy challenge is really around fitting it into my life, right now and I would encourage others to make their goals fit where they are at currently.
Again, all are welcome! Please consider yourself invite and let's work on some December stories, together!

December Daily® 2022 | Crafting With Krystal 03
Hi friends! Krystal here, back again with a recap of my next Crafting Life with Krystal - December Daily Edition recap!
This mini-series is composed of a weekly Live video on the December Daily Facebook Group. This live event takes place each Thursday at 12PM ET throughout the month of September.
This week, our product topic was the December Daily 2022 Stories of Christmas’ Past Kit. If you missed the video this week, you can check that out below.
LET’S RECAPIn today’s video, we discussed ways to use the products included in the 2022 Stories of Christmas’ Past Kit to tell a variety of stories and use them in a bunch of different ways. Let’s go through each product individually and talk about design ideas. For the products that contain text/sentiments, I’ll also add in some different story sparks too.
My hope is to give you ideas that you can translate into your own projects this year - helping you to love + use all the beautiful components of the Stories of Christmas’ Past Kit this year.
1. JOURNALING CARDS
The December Daily 2022 Stories of Christmas’ Past Kit includes a set of nine 6”x4” journaling cards. They all have the same polaroid type design with a sentiment in the bottom right corner. If you are looking for story prompts, these are a perfect place to start. Here are some ideas for the different titles:
“Homemade” - Document the different things you homemake throughout the December season: food, Christmas Dinner/Breakfast, Desserts/Cookies, Gifts, Cards, etc. What homemade gifts do you receive? “Under the Tree” - Document the gifts placed under the tree, gathering around the tree, a pet’s favorite sleeping spot, your tree skirt story, etc. “Christmas Morning” - Perfect for documenting Christmas morning stories: what time you woke up, the different activities that make up your Christmas morning routine, etc. “Remembering” - Great for stories of your past Christmases: favorite childhood Christmas memory, favorite gift you’ve received in the past, Christmas now vs. then (empty nest vs young kids), etc. This one is NOT Christmas specific and can go into any project/story. “Santa Photos Here” - document the santa photo from this year or from previous year. Print more of this card and create a mini album with the 6x4 cards. “This Christmas Memory” - Same stories as “Remembering”. This one is more Christmas specific though.
“Christmas Classic” - What is something you watch/listen to in December that is Classic Christmas for you? Classic Christmas recipe you make. “Family Recipes” - Document your family recipes - Christmas or any time: Dinner/Breakfast/Desserts/Baking, recipes passed down through the generations, what is the side/dish you are tasked with making every year, etc.
“Christmas Eve” - Document the different parts of your Christmas Eve traditions, What is the same/different as Christmas eve as an adult vs. as a child, etc.
Here are some ideas I have for how you can use these cards in your album this year:
Use the journaling cards like polaroid frames. Add a photo into the middle box OR cut the frame out and add on top of a 6x4 photo. Pair these with the 4x4 chipboard polaroid frames to make a grid page. Using washi tape or copy paper, create a flip up with photos and these journaling cards. This can allow you to use more than one Journaling Card on a page OR more than one photo on the page. Create a flip up using a 6x4 transparency - place a number on top of the transparency and have journaling/photo on card underneath.
Trim off the bottom portion of the card that contains the sentiment/prompt. Trim the sides to add a V-shape - making the word strip into a banner shape. Use this as a subtitle on a journaling page, on top of a photo, or as part of a layered embellishment cluster. Pair with the Alpha Stamp for a layered title look.
2. PATTERN PAPERS
Included in the December Daily 2022 Stories of Christmas’ Past Kit are 15 - 7”x8.25” pattern papers. Thirteen of these papers have a fairly subtle or repetitive pattern on them and two have a more unique look. Here are some ideas for how to use these different papers this year:
Trim down the “Merry + Bright” pattern paper to a 3”x4” card and use as a filler. Trim down the “Merry + Bright” pattern to a narrower page (possibly 5”x8.25”) and add a scalloped edge or trim to the side of the page. Add a photo to the tree stump pattern OR create a new patterned paper by cutting the tree stump patterns out, cutting the full circle in half, and re-adhering in three spots on the page. Trim the patterns down into 2x2ish squares or 2”ish circles. Add these in a grid layout with photos, journaling, embellishments, etc.
Use multiple patterns and cut into small shapes. Using the smaller shapes, create larger shapes/elements on your page (i.e.: Diamonds = Stars, Triangles = Hearts OR Trees, Pie Shapes = Circles, etc. Cut patterned papers into large triangle shapes. Back the paper with black or white to create a small border around the outside edge. Layer these triangles together to create a tree/forest look. (Can also add journaling on lighter patterned paper AND triangle photos instead of paper).
3. CHIPBOARD FRAMES
Next up in the collection are the nestled chipboard frames. The December Daily 2022 Stories of Christmas’ Past Kit has three sets of the nestled chipboard frames, with each set being comprised of 5 frames in total. Three are made to look like polaroid frames, and the rest are patterned rectangles. Here are a few ideas for how to use these on your layouts this season:
Add two of the 4x4 polaroid frames vertically onto a 5”x8.25” page. Back the frames with photos, papers/embellishments, or journaling. Use as a smaller page or insert. Stack three of the smaller frames vertically on a 6x8 or 10x8 page. Back the frames with three photos from the day and use the space to the side of the frame to place your words on your layout. Back a polaroid frame with a patterned transparency and add a number on top. Then, cut out the section of paper where the image/transparency would be on a piece of patterned paper. Adhere the polaroid/transparency on top of the whole to create a small transparency/window - giving you a small peek-a-boo to the next page.
Use a bunch of the frames all on one page to create a unique grid look. Create an interactive window photo: Add a polaroid frame to a piece of cardstock. Cut out the hole where the photo would go. Add a piece of twine vertically in the middle of the “window”. Finish the backside of the cardstock by adhering another polaroid on the back of the original. Print two of the same sized photos - slightly smaller than the polaroid hole. Adhere back to back with the twine in-between. The photo can now turn in the window! Pile a bunch of the frames on top of each other to look like a bunch of stacked presents. Back the frames with images of your wrapped gifts or samples of your paper. Add twine/bows to the top of the frames to give a finished present look.
4. BLACK TAGS
The ten black 3”x4” tags included in the 2022 Stories of Christmas’ Past Kit are super versatile. I love the black matte finish and can’t wait to try out a bunch of different techniques on them to spruce them up + make them look super custom. Here are some ideas for how to use these awesome tags:
Using a white paint pen, hand write a sentiment on a tag or add your journaling right on top. Use a stencil (purchased OR diy) and white/gold acrylic paint to create your own patterned tags. Use white/red/gold embossing powder and stamp sets to create your own textured tags. Add a Glitter Cardstock Word, paired with a sprig of greenery or a tiny phrase sticker. Use washi at the base of the tags to break up all the black + add in more color/pattern. Cut the same tag shape out of a patterned transparency and layer the two tags together. Embellish the tags with: die cuts, wood veneer, felt gifts, chipboard numbers, etc.
Use a patterned transparency to create a pocket on top of a full page photo. Store an embellished tag inside the pocket and add journaling to the back of it. Use the black tags as a pattern and cut out additional tags from patterned paper, photos, etc. Use a combination of all the tags to make a grid page or a collaged page.
5. 6X8 CARDSTOCK FILM STRIP SHEETS
Of all the products included in the December Daily 2022 Stories of Christmas’ Past Kit, the 6x8 film strip pages are definitely my favorite! After brainstorming ideas for these, I totally want to use all three of them in my album this year. Here are some ideas for how to use these awesome die cut frames:
Use like you would a 2”x2” page protector. Add photos, journaling, patterned paper, and embellishments into each of the 12 - 2” squares. Add the full page over a full page photo to make it look like a window. The photo could be of a shopping display (window shopping), the show falling, your view outside, etc. Create an embossed vellum page sized to the 7x8.25 page. Using a snowflake stamp set, stamp and emboss white snowflakes all over the vellum. Then, adhere behind the cardstock die cut page to look like a snowy scene through a window. Trim down the squares to create your own custom size or design. Trim in half to create a 6x4 die cut with 6 - 2” windows. Trim pieces of the inner frame to create larger square/rectangle openings for photos/journaling. Stitch a page of journaling or a photo enlargement to the edge of the die cut page to bring to the full 10x8 size.
Use two of the frames side by side to create an advent calendar - 24 squares in total. Use two of the frames side by side to create a larger window image. Back the frames with a horizontal photo sized at 14”x8.25”. Create wreath elements to add in the middle of the frames - making it look like decorated windows. (Could have the wreaths loose so you can flip to the back OR swivel - then add journaling underneath/on back) Create window card pieces that fit into each of the 2”x2” squares. Punch the right side with a small circle, creating a notch to easily pull the window portion up and reveal the photo/journaling underneath. Use a portion of the die cut page to represent an apartment building. Add die cuts, photos, pattern paper to the inside of the squares - making it look like individual apartments for each square.
6. CHIPBOARD + PLASTIC PHRASES
This collection of products includes two similar tiny phrase elements - a white chipboard tiny phrase set with red writing AND a black plastic tiny phrase set with white writing. Here are some ideas of what you can do with these - individually and together:
Create a grid pattern on a 3x4 journaling card to use as a filler. Could also add the pattern to just the top 1-1.5” and use it for a place to add journaling underneath. Stack the tiles together to create larger shapes: i.e. circles, snow/asterisks, Santa’s beard, etc. Use the negative portion of the chipboard sheet as a stencil for a brick pattern! Could use texture paste (tinted if desired), acrylic paint, or ink blending.
Mix the two colors/textures of phrases to create a black and white striped pattern - horizontal or diagonal. Pair with the vellum tags OR glitter cardstock words to make a subtitle. Add as a simple embellishment. Use a Xyron Sticker Maker to add adhesive behind plastic pieces.
7. VELLUM TAGS
I love the fun shapes and sizes of the five vellum tags included in the 2022 Stories of Christmas’ Past Kit. They give off such a whimsical feel and the vellum texture is super neat. Here are a few ideas for page designs including these tags:
Create a collage with the tags, adding them directly on top of a full page photo. The present shaped tag would be a great place for some small journaling - using a slick writer pen. Add to a tag embellishment including other textures. Add a vellum tag on top of a 3x4 patterned transparency and use it to designate the story number or as a filler card.
Create a garland look across the top of the page (or use a die cut). Hang the tags from the garland like ornaments. Cut out photos into additional shapes and hang those in amongst the vellum tags to fill in spaces & add photos. Tell a story about your wrapped gifts/wrapping paper. Take photos of your wrapped gifts and add the tags on top as though they were there when the photo was taken.
8. WOODEN NUMBER STAMPS
Number stamps are SUPER versatile and can help you to tell an incredibly wide range of stories. The 2022 Stories of Christmas’ Past Kit comes with the cutest wooden number stamp! Here are a bunch of ideas for stories you can tell with it:
Stamp a collage of numbers on a 3x4 journaling card. Use the same color ink for all of the numbers except the number story it’s for. Having one number in a different color will help it to stand out. Use the numbers to create a journaling list. Stamp the numbers 1-12 to tell a special 12 Days of Christmas Story. Stamp the years that your favorite movies were produced in or the year that you first saw the movie. Use the number stamp to document an advent calendar. (Possibly use with the die cut window page.)
Number the things of Christmas for a new take on your Christmas day story. Examples of things to number: presents, families visited, movies watched, songs listened to, naps taken, tantrums thrown, cups of cheer (aka coffee), miles driven, photos taken, hours playing, smiles seen, etc. Create your own calendar page for the December season. Document a December day in the life using time as your prompt. Use the stamp to create your time blocks and journal what you did at those times.
CONCLUSION
I don’t know about you… but SO many of these ideas have me feeling super excited to use the December Daily 2022 Stories of Christmas’ Past kit this year. I’m especially excited for the die cut window/film strip pages. What element are you most excited to work with from this kit?
Today, I want to leave you with a challenge to help you think ahead about how you want to use some of the Stories of Christmas’ Past Kit elements this year: Take one of the ideas presented in today's video/blog post and create a page sketch idea of your own. December Daily® 2022 | Crafting With Krystal 02
Hi friends! Krystal here, back again with a recap of my next Crafting Life with Krystal - December Daily Edition recap!
This mini-series is composed of a weekly Live video on the December Daily Facebook Group. This live event takes place each Thursday at 12PM ET throughout the month of September.
This week, our product topic was the 2022 December Daily® Main Kit. If you missed the video this week, you can check that out below.
LET’S RECAPIn today’s video, we are talking about the different story prompts you can find in the 2022 December Daily® Main Kit components + different design ideas for how to use the various products included in the kit. Let’s go through each product individually and talk about design ideas. For the products that contain text/sentiments, I’ll also add in some different story sparks too.
My hope is to give you ideas that you can translate into your own projects this year - helping you to love + use all the beautiful components of the Main Kit this year.
1. PLASTIC TITLES
The 2022 December Daily Main Kit includes five large plastic titles. If you are looking for story prompts, these are a perfect place to start. Here are some ideas for the different titles:
“Twinkle” - Document Christmas lights on your home, a beautiful night sky (maybe even the night sky on Christmas Eve), a light parade, etc. “Merry” - Document things that made you feel merry today, a happiness log, pair with a stamped word “Christmas” to document Christmas morning, etc. “FaLaLa” - Perfect for documenting Christmas music (top songs of the year, songs you sing on repeat, songs that make you want to dance), Christmas caroling, etc. “Jingle” - Do you love or despise the song Jingle bells, documenting the sounds of the season, have an ugly sweater with bells on it or accessories that jingle, etc. “Ba Humbug” - a tough day, having trouble getting into the Christmas mood, favorite books/stories of the season, write a letter to Mr. Scrooge, etc.
With the plastic phrases being so big (part of what makes them so cool), I know they can seem a bit daunting to work with. Here are some ideas I have for how you can get these awesome elements on your pages this year:
Pair the large plastic phrase with a gold foil label layered underneath. The labels can help to ground the phrase AND give you space for adding a subtitle with text, handwriting, or stamps.
Add the large plastic phrases directly in the middle of a full page photo. This would be a great way to document a scene (photo of your decorated living room, photo of your house exterior, photo of the sky, flat lay photo of gifts, ect.).
Place a plastic title at the top of a blank piece of cardstock. Use it as a direct journaling prompt and create your own “journaling page”. Using a pen, printing, or stitching on the page, you could create grids to journal inside of - giving your page a designer feel.
2. JOURNALING CARDS
The 2022 December Daily Main Kit comes with a wide variety of journaling cards this year. When looking for journaling prompts, the journaling cards definitely have you covered. Here are a few different story ideas from the cards in this kit:
4x4 Journaling Cards - use the cards to tell eight separate stories OR combine them all together to tell 8 pieces of one story. “Gather Together” - great for telling a story of a holiday gathering. Could be a Christmas Eve/Christmas day story… or any holiday party on your schedule this year. “Traditions We Love” - what are some of the holiday traditions you have kept from your childhood, NEW traditions you have started and why “Memories” - Tell a story of a Christmas past, use it for a final story and document your favorite memories of the season. “Around the Tree” - document the gifts you have wrapped and around the tree, the story of your tree skirt, the story of gathering around the tree, your town tree lighting ceremonyFor design, here are some ideas I love:
Use a handful of the 4x4 cards to create a waterfall element. Add photos on the backside of the cards - so you can see journaling + a photo when you flip the cards down.
Layer the rubber DECEMBER on top of the wreath card. Add to a pocket for a beautiful title piece OR fussy cut out an add to a transparency/photo for an album opener.
Fussy cut the gold foil frames out of the 6x4 and 3x4 journaling cards. Use the frames with the nestled chipboard circles to create a gallery wall look. Add photos/journaling into the various frame elements.
3. FELT HALF CIRCLE POCKETS
These are hands down my favorite product of the year. I love the bright red colors, the interactive possibilities, and the texture these pockets bring to the collection this year. Here are a bunch of ways you can use these in your album this year!
Create the look of a wreath or a circle wall decor piece. Add some holly and ribbon to the top of your circle journaling card (or a circle/half circle photo) + place a glitter cardstock word at the top edge of the felt pocket for a gorgeous decorative looking piece. You could layer this on transparency, patterned paper, OR a full page photo. Use one of the largest nestled chipboard circles/frames to back the felt pocket. You will get a small outline of black around the entire piece. You could back the chipboard with a photo… So when the card is pulled out of the pocket, a photo is revealed behind it.
Using the nestled chipboard, foam circles, and felt pockets, create a circled collage page. Back the chipboard with photos and use the pockets for journaling. Using the AE Circle Stamp and just the circle journaling cards, stamp a colored circle into the middle of the cards and layer on a page to tell three parts of a story. Fill the pockets with tiny letters to Santa (could make the pocket look like Santa by adding a belt embellishment across the top edge). Create more DIY felt pockets and make them into an advent calendar for your wall. Each pocket holds something for you to do that day.
4. PUFFY + LAYERED STICKERS
Dimensional stickers are usually a bit of a struggle for me to find ways to use but so cute it’s hard to pass them up. This year, I’m determined to use the adorable layered Santas! Here are some ideas I’ve had for both the puffies and the layered stickers in the Main Kit.
Add the layered Santas/presents to a journaling page and use them like bullet points for telling your story. Remove the foam adhesive between the layers + on the back of the layered stickers. Readhere everything together to make the layered stickers no longer dimensional. (The details + texture will totally still be there!)
5. GOLD FOIL LABELS
The skinny gold foil labels from the main kit are such an amazing element. They are perfect as a layering piece and can help carry a sense of cohesion throughout your album. You could add them to a photo for each day of the month, or cover up the number and add to any page with some writing/stamping inside as a layering element.
Another idea to consider is adding them ALL onto a page to document gratitudes throughout the month and having that be one of your stories this year. With the 6x8 album, you would either need to create a double page layout, add them to the front and back of a page, or create a flip out.
The 10x8 has a bit more room, so you may be able to squeeze them all onto one page… or use the flip out idea and have a page that’s a bit smaller for page size variety.
6. FOAM CIRCLES
Whenever I have a kit that includes a pack of embellishments that are all the exact same size and shape, my mind immediately goes to… bullet points. I love the way they look spaced out evenly on a page and help direct the eye through the story I’m telling.
Working in a 6x8 layout, the foam circle embellishments fit perfectly vertically down the side of a page. I would totally create a grid look and add my journaling next to each one (maybe using the titles as my journaling jumping off points for the day) and pair this with a full page photo.
For the larger 10x8 format, I think the foam circles look amazing in a horizontal line. I think it would look so good to add the circles about half way down the page, put my journaling under each one, and then have a full page photo or a photo collage above the circles.
Some other ways you could use these:
Put in 2”x2” pockets and pair with either six 2”x2” journaling squares or photos. Stick two of the circles back to back with a piece of twine down the center. Then add it as an interactive spinning element on a page.Use them on a page with other circle elements to make a circle collage page.
7. VELLUM TAGS
Tags are definitely a favorite shape of mine to work with. There are so many ways you can use tags - as embellishments, as a design feature, interactively, collaged, and more.
On a 6x8 layout, add four of the vellum tags to a full page. Back the tags with photos, cut to the same tag shape. Then, add your journaling on top of the vellum tag and tie off with twine. If you adhere the photo to the page, you will be able to swing/lift the tag aside and see the photo underneath, as well as being able to see the muted version through the vellum.
Add a strip of washi to the bottom of the tag and layer a sticker/die cut on top for an adorable embellished tag.
8. VELLUM PHRASE STRIPS
This product is another one that feels a little tricky to come up with ideas to use. However, if you look at these vellum phrase strips as being the same as a thin washi, that may help open up some different possibilities for how you could use them (beyond the obvious layering element).
(PS: wondering how to adhere the strips? I would suggest using a stapler OR a xyron sticker maker to add adhesive evenly on the back of the vellum. This makes it almost impossible to see the adhesive.)
9. WASHI TAPE
Many of the same ideas from the Vellum Phrase Strips will apply to the washi tape in this kit as well. I especially love the idea of alternating the black phrase washi with the gold foil washi and creating a beautiful pattern with the two.
Another idea would be to create tiny banners with the washi tape. Take a piece of the wash and fold it in half over a piece of twine. Then snip the bottom into a banner shape. You could use this in addition to any washi tapes you currently have to create a really cute + festive element for your page.
10. WOOD VENEER STARS
The wood veneer stars in the Main Kit are just so beautiful. I love that they have the look of stars and snowflakes at the same time. Here are some ways you could think about using them in your album this year:
Don’t want to use them in your album? Add a hole punch to the top + string and hang on your Christmas tree!
CONCLUSION
After going through all of the items in the Main Kit and planning out some different story/design ideas, I have to say that I’m more in love with this kit than I originally was. I cannot wait to apply some of these concepts to my album this year and I hope this gets you excited to do the same.
Today, I want to leave you with a challenge to help you think ahead about how you want to use some of the Main Kit elements this year: Take one of the ideas presented in today's video/blog post and create a page sketch idea of your own. Store this with your December Daily supplies to pull out when your products arrive OR when you are documenting your December memories this winter.
I’m going to be back again next week working with the Stories of Christmas’ Past Mini Kit. I hope you’ll join me live on the December Daily Facebook Group this coming Thursday 9/15/2022 at 12PM! (The video will be recorded and I will include a blog post as well recapping our live session.)
Until then friends, have a great day!
