Baltimore Steel Brigade...
I get a lot of GI JOE requests, and I gotta admit I'm not familiar with every character. Like many Joe fans my interest in the property dropped off in the late 80's and especially in the early 90's. The Steel Brigade was a set of Joe troops I was never really familiar with besides the basic look of their cool helmets. It wasn't until the 90's that they started making this troop into individual characters and showing us what some of them looked like unmasked. So here is an example of one of the Steel Brigade troopers as a head and torso convention sketch request.

Ninjak!.....
This is a sketch I did for Chris Campbell over at the Baltimore Comic Con. Chis puts on a great get together at his house the night before the convention and has been affectionately dubbed "Campbell Con" for many in the comic podcasting community.
Chris, like myself, is a HUGE fan of Valiant comics, both old and the newly released books. Valiant has resurfaced with a newline of books last summer including Bloodshot, Harbinger, Archer and Armstrong and XO Manowar. They've since launched Shadowman and Eternal Warrior with a recent company crossover called Harbinger Wars that was seriously fantastic!
I had the great pleasure of meeting the Valiant editorial crew at Heroes con and got to express my interest in the characters and how great the new books have been.
Ninjak was my favorite in the old line up, with XO Manowar as a close second. Joe Quesada and Bart Sears were two of my all time favorite artists in the 90's and they got me into the valiant books initially. In the recent books Ninjak first makes his appearance in the XO Manowar book, so you can only imagine how excited I was about that.
This is my first Valiant related sketch I've done, and now I've really caught the bug. I hope to be able to do more in the future, and would love the chance to work on their books!
On this sketch, I did the Valiant logo in the bottom right and just added the red with copic marker, so the logo is on the physical sketch I did for Chris. Fun stuff! Ninjas are awesome...

Starfire Colors...
Here are colors for the Starfire sketch I did recently. Colors by Simon Gough. My kids love Starfire, but mostly due to the older Teen Titans cartoon and the more recent Teen Titans Go cartoon. Of course she's dressed quite a bit more modestly on the kids show. I don't draw "cheesecake" or pin up girl art, it's just not something that interests me. I even find a sketch like this to be borderline because of the character's costume, but at the same time, Starfire is really a great character with a lot of established history. She's depicted in the older DC comics as a very strong and independent women. Sometimes naive to earth culture, but still very intelligent. I respect how the character is portrayed despite the costume. So my goal in the sketch ( like I do with Wonder Woman and other female characters) is to capture their strength, beauty and power. Not to play up the supposed sex appeal, I hope that comes across in my art.

Storm....
This was a very quick pencil sketch I did toward the end of the con at Harrisburg. It was just pencils, and didn't pick up very well in my scan but I thought I'd show it anyway. Another day, another sketch!

This was actually drawn for Dave Cockrum's niece! Crazy.

Baroness...
I draw Baroness a LOT. But trust me, there could be worse things to draw. This was done at the Burg City Con and is a good example of what I'm doing at shows now that I call a Head and Torso sketch on 9x12. It's the more affordable commission I do, but I tend to put just as much detail in as the full figure sketches since I draw the character to take up the full size of the paper.
This was fun and one of my more favorite Baroness sketches I've done. The guy who commissioned it didn't want me to personalize it, because he told me he intended to flip it on eBay...
So be on the look out, more than likely it will appear and you might be able to make this guy some money ;)

Witchblade...
Here was another commission done down at the Burg City Con. I've never drawn Witchblade before, though I enjoyed the early run on the comic. I haven't read the book in quite awhile though, so if anyone has a suggested arc, I'd pick it up.
Witchblade was a Marc Silvestri creation published in the mid 90's through Image Comics and specifically through Marc's company Top Cow comics. I remember Withblade #10 vividly because it was book my cousins had that introduced the Darkness character. Which quickly spun off into his own book. But it was my first look at Michael Turner's art and I was floored. His unique drawing of the figure and the amount of detail he put into backgrounds and props like the Witchblade power and gauntlet shown here really made an impression on me. Unfortunately, even though he was relatively young, Mike is no longer with us, but his legacy of art is carried on in the immense number of working comic artists that were influenced by him.
This commission was 11x17, drawn and inked at the show.

Venom sketch...
This was a sketch I did a few weekends back at the Burg City Con down in Harrisburg Illinois. That was a fun little show. I went down as a guest, but not knowing really what to expect. Scott Reed, the show runner, is a great guy and was incredibly generous and a gracious host. The show was pretty steady throughout the day and I was able to fit in a few sketches/commissions throughout the day.
I only got to work on one issue of Venom for Marvel, but it was great fun. I was supposed to do more issues, but I was moved over to do the Castle run instead last year. Still I get a lot of these Venom sketch requests, and I'm always happy to do them. It's a cool character design and right up my alley mixing Superhero and Military.
Venom - 621
The scan is pretty terrible, not sure why. The scanner I use at shows usually does well, but maybe just not with pencil sketches.

IDW Signature Plates...Baroness...
Here's the next original art plate of the Baroness. IDW is putting together a high end collector's book of the run on GI JOE that I was a part of. With each book they are including an original art sketch inside. I've just got 3 more Baroness sketches to do for the Black Label series of these books.

Guardians of the Galaxy....
This blank sketch cover is for Scott Reed, the promoter of the Burg City Comic show that's coming up Aug. 24th in Harrisburg, Illinois. It will be just the one day, Sat from 10am-6pm. I'll be there sketching and selling prints. If you're in the southern Illinois area I hope you can come by!
I was actually born in Harrisburg, and have only been back a couple times since I was a very small kid. So I've got some neat history there.
As for the sketch, this is my first time drawing these characters, though I've enjoyed them ever since the Abnett and Lanning run on the Marvel Cosmic books from a few years back. I'm excited for the movie being made from this property, and should tie in the Thanos hint at the end of Avengers bringing together the Marvel space characters!
