Zarana Colors...

This was a fun commission I did awhile back that I got Simon to color up for me. It's a bookend piece to the Zartan one I did last year for the same guy. I'm looking forward to the few Dreadnok commissions I have lined up, especially after doing these and the few Dreadnoks I've done for the GI JOE Battleground game.

Shadowcat...

Here's a long overdue smaller commission that I've been able to squeeze in this week. I have loads of posts from NYCC that I need to put up and other commissions I've been able to finish in the last few weeks. I just haven't had much time to get it all uploaded. I'll try and post a few each day to catch up and show some of the work I've been up to.

Right now I'm keeping pretty busy with the penciling chores on ABC's CASTLE for Marvel comics. We're doing the 4th volume that should be out this Spring. Also I'm still doing work on NERF for the Zombie Hunter line that I've recently been showing. I'm also still doing loads of character artwork for the GI JOE Battlegrounds game that I'll post here pretty soon. To date I've drawn 85 character illustrations for the game!!! 30 of those have just been in the past few weeks. So I've got loads more to show.

Until then, here's the long overdue Shadow Cat for Andy.

NERF Zombie Strike....Enough Zombies already!

Okay, this is the last zombie I promise. I wanted to show a bit of process on this one. Even though most of this guy is covered in ratty clothes and in shadow, I start my figures with the same understructure. Drawing through the forms, and nailing down the anatomy as best as I can.  Usually I wont go into quite this much detail, but you can see from my underdrawing how knowing the anatomy and muscles of the body, then informs how the clothing and shadows fall across the body.

NERF Zombie Strike...Zombies...

Alright, if you're gonna have zombie fighting kids...then of course you need zombies for them to fight! I did a series of Zombie illustrations that they could use for the packages. Keeping it mostly silhouette, I did some versions with a range of how much in shadow they were.

NERF Zombie Strike!...

Now that they chose from one of the gestures I did, we move on to the final illustration. The final consists of 3 steps, pencil prelim for approval, Inked line art, then final colors.

I did the pencils smaller, incase there were revisions and I'm not spending as much time on this stage if I have to redraw it.

This was the approved sketch to go forward on.
 Here below is the final inked line art. I draw out the entire figure jus to make sure he's all there if they need to move him around on the box or use the illustration anywhere else for promotional reasons. I did the inks on 11x17 Bristol board with Copic Muliliner pens and a brush. Then I send the inked file over to Simon Gough, who uses my initial concept colors to go from and he does the final colors. 

This then gets placed on the box design and is ready for production

NERF Zombie Strike...

More of the Nerf artwork. So we took that kids first design and then I worked up gestures for the final package art.  Here are a few I turned in and the final that was chosen.

So I did quite a few poses, we went through a few rounds nailing down the kind of thing they wanted. Also they had worked out the die cut of the package, or the space I knew I'd have available to draw in. So there are some I went back and readjusted to make sure they'd fit within the die cut of the package.
They ended up still using some of these gestures as they came up with an idea for the back package design. 


This was the first gun, that this kid was going to use.

NERF- Zombie Strike!....

So one of the projects I've been working on for the last year has been toy package art for NERF guns. I  work with a creative group called Day6 . They get hired by various companies to design and create the artwork for projects like toy packaging. At times they need to hire out freelance illustrators to work with to complete a project, and I was already working with them on and off. Last fall they landed the NERF contract and I was pulled on to develop some character art to go on the new line of NERF guns.

The initial work started by creating new kids, that are zombie hunters, and of course the zombies themselves that would go on the packages. For the longest time I haven't been able to show any of the work I had put into the project, but the first few guns and products in the line are exclusively available at Target stores now!

Here is the first kid I worked on. They wanted them to look like they were all dirty, and using sports gear as armor. The weapons would be the NERF guns and anything else they could get their hands on (i.e tire iron in the satchel). I don't normally do much coloring, but for these concept things it was quick work and a nice change of pace.
