Cut four 10″ x 18″ Rectangles WoolFelt® Fabric in assorted blues and green, for pillow front and back.Cut our 10″ x 18″ Rectangles Pellon Easy-Knit Interfacing.

Using  June Tailor’s EZE-View Pressing Cloth, press Easy-Knit Interfacing to wrong side of WoolFelt Rectangles.

Cut out petal applique pattern.Trace FIVE flower petals onto wrong side of dark pink WoolFelt.

Trace FIVE flower petals onto wrong side of light pink WoolFelt.

Cut out leaf applique pattern.Trace two flower leaves onto wrong side of dark green WoolFelt.

Cut out flower center applique pattern.Trace one flower center onto wrong side of yellow WoolFelt.

Using 45 mm Rotary Cutter and P inking Blade, cut out flower center.

Create Pillow FrontPlace one lime 10″ x 18″ WoolFelt® Fabric Rectangle over one aqua 10″ x 18″ WoolFelt® Fabric Rectangle, overlapping 2″ at center.Using  Clover’s Double Sided Basting Tape or June Tailor’s Fabric Glue Stick, glue-baste or tape-baste rectangels at center overlap.

Create Pillow BackPlace one light blue 10″ x 18″ WoolFelt® Fabric Rectangle over one dark teal 10″ x 18″ WoolFelt® Fabric Rectangle, overlapping 2″ at center.Using  Clover’s Double Sided Basting Tape or June Tailor’s Fabric Glue Stick, glue-baste or tape-baste rectangels at center overlap.

Insert a new Schmetz Denim Needle Sz. 90 into sewing machine.

Set machine for a 3.0 mm Straight Stitch.

Attached Open Toe Sewing Machine Presser Foot to machine, and topstitch pillow front along center WoolFelt Fabric edge.

Topstitch pillow back along center WoolFelt Fabric edge.

Flip pillow front over, and topstitch pillow front along center edge WoolFelt Fabric edge.Repeat steps above and topstitch pillow back along center WoolFelt Fabric edge.

Set pillow back aside.

Place dark green leaves at opposite corners on right side of pillow front–at 1-1/4″ inside cut edges.Tape-baste or glue-baste leaves to pillow.

Stitch leaves to pillow front, at center of each leaf.

Position dark pink flower petals on right side of pillow front–overlapping as shown–about 2-1/4″ inside cut edges.Tape-baste or glue-baste petals to pillow.

Stitch petal centers to center pillow front–stitching in a circular shape as shown.

Position light pink flower petals on right side of pillow front–overlapping as shown–about 2-1/4″ inside pillow cut edges.Tape-baste or glue-baste petals to pillow assembly.

Lift lower left petal, and tuck yellow flower center into center of flower as shown. Do not tape or glue-baste.

Remove lower left petal and set aside.

Topstitch light pink petals–where petals overlap, and stitching through upper right yellow flower center–as shown.

Continue topstitching light pink petals–where petals overlap.When approaching yellow center top, stop stitching with needle in the down position.

Fold yellow center over to the right, and continue stitching light pink flowers where petals overlap–as shown.

With yellow center folder over to the right, replace lower left light pink petal over folded yellow center.Tape-baste or glue baste petal to pillow front.

Continue stitching light pink flowers where petals overlap–as shown.

Place pillow front to pillow back, with wrong sides together.Using Clover’s Wonder Clips , clip along pillow top and sides.Do not clip along lower pillow edge.

Edgestitch pillow front to pillow back, along pillow top and sides only.

At pillow corners, stop with needle in the down position, and pivot around corners.Backstitch at beginning and ending of seam–leaving lower edge open.

Optional: Slide pillow case over chair back for a beautiful posey chair cover decoration!

To complete Posey Pillow, insert pillow form into pillow–through lower seam opening.

Pin seam closed with Clover’s Flower Head Straight Pins and stitch seam closed, removing pins while stitching.

Prepare your fabrics! Pre-shrink fabrics by steaming and pressing. Then, stabilize fabrics for the sewing process by pressing and starching fabrics with Quilter’s Starch Savvy.

Quilt As You Go:  Mix & Match 12 Block Quilt has three different block designs; Courthouse Square Block, Cornerstone Block, and Cabin on Point Block. Today, we’re illustrating Courthouse Square!

 

  Follow the fabric placement photo, along with the instructions included with our Exclusive Quilt As You Go: Mix & Match 12 Block Quilt Bundle Box by the Stitch it! Sisters. We’re using Sew Bloom Collection, by Cherry Guidry of Contempo Studio for Benartex!

We’ve arranged our layout as shown:

Assemble Quilt As You Go:  Mix & Match 12 Block Quilt

Place wrong side of backing fabric on  (unprinted) side of batting. Make sure backing fabric completely covers printed area.Baste stitch around outside perimeter pattern line.

 

Use June Tailor’s Quilt Basting Spray to spray baste batting to backing fabric!

Use June Tailor’s Fabric Glue Stick to hold piece one in place. Place piece one – 3-1/2″ x  3-1/2″ right side up.

Printed lines are for placement only and are not stitching lines!

Place 2-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ rectangle – two, onto piece one – one, right side together. Stitch with a scant 1/4″ on long side of the rectangle as shown.

Continue to place rectangles and triangles by number, right sides together with previous pieces and aligning with placement lines.Stitch with a scant 1/4″ on long side of the rectangle as shown.Flip pieces right side up.Use June Tailors Magic Seam Wand  to press seam open.

Assemble Quilt

Prepare quilt blocks by pressing and starching and trimming all blocks to 14-1/2″ x 14-1/2″ square.Layout block rows as shown below, or you’re the designer–you may choose your quilt block layout!

Attach Sash in a Dash

Cut eight, 15-1/2″ Sash-In-A-Dash strips for vertical sashing.Cut three 47″ Sash-In-A-Dash strips for horizontal sashing.

 

Optional: Using Clover’s 3/4″ Bias Tape Maker and create folded accent fabric strips for a coordinating sashing accent!

Place blocks into 15-1/2″ vertical sashing strips. Pin.Stitch through all three layers close to the outside edge of Sash-In-A-Dash.

Stitch Blocks together creating four rows of three blocks each.Optional: Topstitch 3/4″ folded fabric strips over center of each vertical Sash-In-A-Dash!

Place block rows into 47″ horizontal Sash-In-A-Dash, pin and stitch.Optional: Topstitch 3/4″ folded fabric strips over center of each horizontal Sash-In-A-Dash!Repeat steps above and assemble the Quilt As You Go: Mix & Match 12 Block Quilt!

Following instructions included with Zippity-Do-Done Throw Pillows Bundle Box, cut fabric squares and rectangles.Construct Quilt As You Go: Zippity-Do-Done Throw Pillow Front
Place wrong side of backing fabric to unprinted side of pillow front preprinted batting. Make sure backing fabric completely covers printed area.Baste stitch around outside perimeter pattern line. NOTE: Do not iron.Place center fabric square piece one – right side up onto center printed blue square placement lines marked number one.

 

Printed blue lines are for placement only and are not stitching lines. 

Use June Tailor’s Fabric Glue Stick to hold fabric piece number one in place.

Place rectangle fabric piece two onto piece one, along blue placement lines, with right sides together.Stitch with a scant 1/4″seam along outer long edge of rectangle.Use June Tailors Magic Seam Wand  to press seam open. NOTE: Do not iron.

Place rectangle fabric piece three onto piece one, along blue placement lines, with right sides together.Stitch with a scant 1/4″ seam along outer long edge of rectangle.

Place rectangle fabric piece four along blue placement lines, with right sides together.Stitch with a scant 1/4″ seam along outer long edge of rectangle. Fold open seam.

Place rectangle fabric piece five along blue placement lines, with right sides together.Stitch with a scant 1/4″ seam along outer long edge of rectangle. Fold open seam.

Place triangle fabric piece six along blue placement lines, with right sides together.Stitch with a scant 1/4″ seam along outer long edge of rectangle. Fold open seam.

Repeat step above with triangle fabric pieces; seven, eight and nine.Edgestitch around all four outside edges and trim. Set aside.Construct Quilt As You Go: Zippity-Do-Done Throw Pillow Back

Create Custom Zipper Accent

Using Clover’s Hot Ruler, press under 1/4″ along long edge of one 2″ rectangle.

Align pressed rectangle edge along one edge of Zippity-Do-Done–meeting folded fabric edge to stitched line of Zippity-Do-Done.Open Zippity-Do-Done casing. Fold fabric rectangle long cut edge and tuck between Zippity-Do-Done casing. Press.Repeat steps above along second edge of Zippity-Do-Done to create Custom Zipper Accent.

Insert lower pillow back fabric rectangle into Zippity-Do-Done casing and stitch along finished edge of Zippity-Do-Done. Repeat steps above for pillow upper pillow back. Place finished pillow top wrong sides together with finished pillow back. Edgestitch around all four outer edges.Finish pillow edges with your favorite binding method , insert pillow form.Repeat steps above and create a set of three Zippity-Do-Done Throw Pillows. This easy-to-piece design can be made into a double- or full-size bed quilt. The gradation of colors provides great visual impact! Nancy found inspiration for this quilt design from a beach towel that was left behind at her home – by a friend of the family.

Quilt To Give

Nancy modified the original column quilt (above) and created this super-quick quilt design — to make and donate to individuals and families in need. The quilt is easily made from a fabric stash, with perhaps few purchased fabric additions. The center of each column features scrappy patchwork. You can easily create a Quilt to Give by yourself, or invite friends to sew with you—like we do each September at The Great Wisconsin Quilt Show in Madison, Wis.

Heartbeat Column Quilt

No matter the size—lap to king—you can sew this quilt in a heartbeat! Colorful accent strips in a variety of widths make up Nancy’s heartbeat quilt pattern, while the subdued one-color strips add a perfect background for the design.

Interrupted Columns Quilt

Nancy’s Interrupted Columns quilt is a speedy-to-make queen-size quilt designed with a very easy lesson in color coordination. Simply find a print you love for the sashing, and choose five colors from the print to use for the column solid color fabrics. The interruptions—horizontal strips—stop the lengthwise movement while creating a more artistic appeal.

Carefree Column Quilt

Fat quarters, those convenient fabric cuts approximately 18″ x 21″, are ideal for this carefree column quilt. Made with six fat quarter cuts and one background fabric, this lap quilt is ideal for bright fabric choices or large-scale prints.

Wind Chime Column Quilt

The wind chimes hanging from the deck at Nancy’s home served as the inspiration for this Wind Chime Column Quilt. Just like real wind chimes, the angled accent pieces, seem to move as if gently nudged by the wind.

Folded Flying Geese Wall Hanging

No half-square triangles are needed to make the artistic “flying geese” in Nancy’s Folded Flying Geese wall hanging. Start with simple fabric squares, fold three times, and presto – the folded triangles create 3-dimensional Flying Geese. Plus, the background columns are not cut, but rather one piece of fabric. Hmm, it’s kinda interesting!

Folded Scrappy Column Quilt

Are you looking for a stash buster or a scrap quilt project? Nancy’s Folded Scrappy Column Quilt is the answer! The steps are simple: fold, then quilt. There are no pieced triangles and zero bias cut edges. This three-dimensional project has guidelines, rather than an exact pattern, so it is perfect for every size fabric scrap in your stash. Talk about easy!

Dotted Columns Wall Hanging

Switch it up and making an abstract wall hanging with Nancy’s column-quilting techniques, and a few fun fabrics. This artistic silk dupioni wall hanging includes “dotted columns” or circles appliquéd over the easy-to-create columns.

Happy-Go-Lucky Chevron Column Quilt

Use novel piecing techniques in Nancy’s Happy-Go-Lucky Chevron Column Quilt. Mix and match the wide and narrow strips of fabric to create care-free chevron columns. No matching necessary—use only straight stitching.

Hit-and-Miss Table Runner

At first glance, our Hit-and-Miss Table Runner looks like it is pieced with traditional hexagons. Not so with Nancy’s speedy column quilt design. The hexagon shapes are created with two halves, eliminating the intersection of three seams, otherwise known as Y-seams. With this technique, faux-hexagon halves are stitched in columns with relative speed and ease. Plus, the results are dramatic!

Tumbling Tumblers Column Quilt

Take a recognizable tumbler quilt design and turn it on its side. Nancy combines several sizes of tumbler shapes to create this modern quilt design – that breaks most sewing rules. And, the piecing is super-simple!

Floating Squares Column Quilt

This Floating Squares Column double-sized quilt looks difficult to make, but not so! The darker squares “float” on the light background of the quilt top, made with some creative cutting and sewing of crosswise strips. Not to worry, you’ll not be required to cut squares, Nancy opted for a quick-to-make column quilt technique!

The Nancy Zieman Productions Team is excited to announce the 2023 Pillow Sewing Challenge, taking place March 4 – March 23, 2023! All sewers, quilters, and machine embroiderers are invited to participate in the Nancy Zieman Productions 2023 Pillow Sewing Challenge. Brainstorm, browse, design, and plan. Then, sew a pillow! Enter the NZP 2023 Pillow Sewing Challenge by emailing a hi-res photo along with your name and mailing address, including city and state to info@ziemanproductions.com.

Make a pillow to showcase your sewing talents. Entries may be for any occasion, any color, or any size (finished pillow must fit on a sofa or comparable household furniture). Sew a pillow using as much imagination as you like. You may enter ONE pillow: Pillow must be completed within the last year and may not have been entered into previous Nancy Zieman Productions Pillow Sewing Challenges.

St. Patrick’s Day Lucky Gnome Fabric Bowl Sewing Tutorial with 2-1/2″ Fabric Strips

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and stitch a Lucky Gnomes Fabric Bowl! Using Clover’s NEW! Fabric Tube Maker, 2-1/2″ Fabric Strips and Pellon’s convenient 2-1/2″ Precut Cotton Batting Strips, we’re stitching this festive fabric bowl! The sewing is fun and the finished fabric bowl provides a festive table centerpiece.

St. Patrick’s Day Lucky Gnomes Fabric Bowl Sewing Tutorial

Approximate finished size: 8″ Diameter

Cut two 6-1/2″ squares for “inner circle”.Cut two 6-1/2″ squares from Pellon Fusible Fleece.

 

Create the Inner Circle

Using Clover’s 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge, or a salad bowl, trace a 6″ circle on “inner circle” fabric.

 Using Bordeaux Scissors ,  or Rotary Cutter, cut a 2-1/2″ slit opening near center circle.

Place fabric squares right sides together. Stack and place both fusible fleece squares to wrong side of outer fabric circle. Wonder Clip layers together.

Stitch around entire outer circle. Backstitch at beginning and ending of seam.

 

Using pinking shears, or 45mm rotary cutter with pinking blade trim away excess fabric.

Turn circle right side out through opening, and use  Point 2 Point Turner  to smooth edges while turning.

 

Press. Set aside.

 

Create Outer Strips

Cut Two 2-1/2″ crosswise fabric strips each from four fat quarters – each measuring approximately 2-1/2″ x 21″.

 

If using 2-1/2″ Precut Fabric Strips, select Four Coordinating fabric strips each assorted darks, mediums, and lights!

Place crosswise fabric strips right sides together, offsetting short ends, and stitch diagonally between right angles.

Seam fabric strips together with diagonal seams, stitching all strips in to one continuous strip. Clip threads.

Press seams flat, then press seams open.Trim away excess seam allowance.

 

Cut batting strip narrow end at a 45° angle. Fold narrow fabric strip end, wrong sides together, at a 45° angle. Press.Place 2-1/2″ batting strip to wrong side of fabric strip. Place batting strip about 3″ in from fabric fold.

Following manufactures instructions, insert fabric and fleece into Clover’s NEW! Fabric Tube maker.

 

Set Sewing machine for a 3.0 straight stitch, attach an Open Toe Presser Foot , insert a new Schmetz Size 90 Jeans/Denim Needle, and edgestitch along long edge.Advancing Fabric Tube Maker as you stitch.

 

Complete sewing continuous fabric strip by cutting narrow end at a 45° angle. Cut batting strip end at  45° angle, and 1″ shorter than fabric. Fold fabric strip end up, wrong sides together.

Continue stitching to end of strip and backstitch.

Tuck folded end of fabric strip under center circle.

Set sewing machine for a wide zigzag stitch, and stitch fabric strip to inner circle. After stitching about an inch, gradually reveal entire width of strip and continue stitching – meeting circle edge to edge of fabric strip. Zig in one fabric and zag in the other, while “kissing” fabric edges together.

Continue stitching, lifting bowl as you stitch.

At about 4″ from the end, tuck folded end of fabric strip under fabric bowl rim, and continue stitching to end of strip. Backstitch.
