One-Seam Skirt
Finished Measurements
Approx. side length from waist: 32″ L
Cut Fabrics and Supplies
Cut four 1″ x 17″ strips Pellon Wonder-Under Fusible Web.Using a tape measure, measure waist.Cut elastic 2″ shorter that waist measurement.Mark knit skirt rectangle 34″ long, by waist measurement plus 2″- 6″.
Before cutting skirt rectangle, wrap greatest stretch of fabric rectangle around waist and test-fit through hips. Mark rectangle skirt width with pins – with desired ease in mind. Reminder to allow an additional 1/2″ for seam allowances.
Using pins, quarter-mark elastic and upper edge skirt fabric.Place elastic to skirt top, right sides together, aligning edges and matching quarter-markings. Pin.Stretch elastic to meet fabric, and secure with additional pins.Insert a new Size 80/12 Jersey Needle into machine.
When attaching elastic to skirt with a flatlock stitch on a serger, place elastic to skirt with right sides together, and place pins parallel to cut edge.
When stitching elastic to skirt with a sewing machine, set sewing machine for a “wobble-stitch”: Choose a slight zigzag (2.0-2.5 length and .5 width). On the outside, this stitch will give the appearance of a straight stitch, while providing a slight amount of stretch to the seam! Or, choose a 4-thread overlock serger stitch. Now’s the perfect time to use a serger!
Stitch or serge seam with 1/4″ seam allowance, or use presser foot edge as a guide.Stitch elastic to skirt top, stretching elastic as you sew.Be sure to backstitch at seam beginning and ending – when stitching with a sewing machine.Fold elastic up and gently open the flatlock serger stitches – revealing the ‘ladder’ stitches.Place skirt right sides together and pin along side seam.Using 1/4″ seam allowance, stitch side seam with 4-Thread serger over lock seam. Or stitch with a wobble stitch on a sewing machine.Insert stitched serger thread tails into eye of a double eye needle. Insert needle into stitched seam, threading tail back through stitched seam.Add a drop of Fray Block, and cut away excess thread tail.
Finish One-Seam Skirt
Fold elastic to skirt inside with wrong sides together. Pin at side seam and at halfway – point (where a second side seam would usually be positioned). With sewing machine wobble stitch, topstitch along side seam, and halfway mark, securing elastic inside skirt.
You’re the designer! Choose your desired skirt length plus 1″, and shorten skirt by trimming away extra fabric.
Using Clover’s Hot Ruler, Eze-View Press Cloth and iron, turn up lower skirt and press 1″ lower hem.Following manufacturer’s instructions, press 1″ strips of Pellon Wonder-Under Fusible Web to wrong side of skirt hem.Remove paper backing from Wonder Under.Using Eze-View Press Cloth and iron, turn up and press 1″ lower hem.Stitch hem with a serger cover stitch, or stitch hem using wobble stitch, blind hem stitch, or topstitch with Double Needle stitching.
The bernette 42 FUNLOCK Coverstitch only Machine features coverstitch options in 2.8 mm and 5.6 mm widths, plus a chain stitch!

Prepare your fabrics! Pre-treat fabric by steaming and pressing, then, stabilize fabrics for the sewing process by pressing and starching fabrics with June Tailor’s Starch Savvy. Press and starch, press and starch.
Cut two 7″ x 22-1/2″ Cotton Fabric rectangles.

Schmetz ELx 705 Serger Needles Size 80/12
and thread machine with four Coordinating Serger Cone Threads.Serge along short ends and opposing long edges, on both fabric rectangles as shown.
Using
Clover’s Hot Ruler,
press under 1″ along all four short ends.
Unfold pressed under short ends and place fabric rectangles right sides together, aligning long serged edges. Pin.Using
Clover’s 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge
, measure and mark 1″ opening along serged seam – at 1″ inside short ends. Repeat marking 1″ opening at opposite short ends at 1″ inside ends.
The 1″ marked openings are “no-sew zones” and will later form the casings for the elastic!
Insert a
Schmetz Universal Size 80 Sewing Machine Needle
in sewing machine. Stitch serged long edges together with 1/4″ seam allowance. Be sure to leave both 1″ marked openings un-stitched! Press seam open.
Re-press under 1″ along both short ends.
Using
Clover’s 6-in-1 Stick ‘n Stitch Seam Guide
on sewing machine, topstitch one short end at 3/4″ inside folded edge – this creates the casing for the elastic! Be sure the distance between the stitching line and folded edge is 3/4″. Repeat 3/4″ topstitching on opposite short end.
Using
Clover’s Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge
and
Erasable Gel Pen,
mark a 7″ length of elastic– at one inch in from one end – and attach
Clover’s Clip ‘n Glide Bodkin
within the first 1″ marking. Do not cut the elastic, yet!
Insert
Clover’s Clip ‘n Glide Bodkin
into one open end – of one 3/4″ elastic casing.
Advance elastic into casing, stopping when the 7″ marking on the elastic aligns with the fabric edge – of elastic casing opening.
At sewing machine, stitch casing opening closed–catching elastic end in stitching. Cut elastic at fabric edge.
Continue advancing elastic into casing, stopping when the 1″ marking on the elastic aligns with the opposite elastic casing opening.
At sewing machine, stitch opposite casing opening closed–catching elastic end in stitching. Cut elastic at fabric edge.
At sewing machine, repeat steps above on opposite short end elastic casing.
Both short ends with be gathered by the elastic.
Align bag right sides together, and serge remaining un-sewn long seam.
Turn Shopping Bag Storage Sleeve right side out.
Fill with reusable shopping bags.
Hang vertically on the inside of a closet door with one repositional sticky hook. Hang from hook with the elastic loop exposed at seam opening – remember the two “no-sew” zones? The elastic hanging loops are accessible through the seam openings – made possible by the “no-sew” zones 🙂Or hang horizontally on a side wall of under-sink cabinet with two repositional sticky hooks!

Cut Fabric
Using Rotary Cutter, Rotary Cutting Ruler and Mat, cut one rectangle approx. 58″/60″ W x 36″ L from Jersey Knit Fabric and trim away selvedges.
A 58″/60″ W x 36″ L rectangle is one-yard of Jersey Knit fabric!
One-Seam Cowl Neck Serger Scarf ConstructionSet serger overlocker machine for a 4-thread serger overlock stitch. Insert new Schmetz ELx 705 Serger Needles Size 80/12 and thread machine with Four Cones Coordinating Serger Cone Threads
Now’s the perfect time to use a serger!
Fold fabric rectangle, right sides together, meeting cut selvedge edges. Align stripes. Pin.
When placing pins for a serging project, we usually insert pins parallel to fabric cut edge – this way you don’t risk cutting into pins with your serger blade! However, for matching strips, we’re pinning through all layers at the strips. Be sure to pull pins as you stitch!
Serger BackstitchingWith needles and presser foot up, insert fabric under presser foot at 1″-2″ from fabric edge.Serge seam with 1/4″ seam allowance, trimming fabric as you stitch.Remove pins, while stitching! At fabric edge, stop with needles up and lift presser foot. Do not cut threads.Turn fabric over. With needles and presser foot up, re-insert fabric under presser foot at cut fabric edge.Serge entire seam with 1/4″ seam allowance, trimming fabric as you stitch.Remove pins, while stitching!Serge entire seam with 1/4″ seam allowance, trimming fabric as you stitch. At seam end, stop with needles up and lift presser foot. Do not cut threads.Turn fabric over. With needles and presser foot up, re-insert fabric under presser foot at cut fabric edge.Overstitch previous stitching line about 1″-2″.Stitch off fabric edge and cut threads. This is how you backstitch on a serger!
If stitching scarf with a sewing machine, set sewing machine for a “wobble-stitch”: Choose a slight zigzag (2.0-2.5 length and .5 width). On the outside, this stitch will give the appearance of a straight stitch, while providing a slight amount of stretch to the seam! If stitching with a sewing machine, be sure to backstitch at seam beginning and ending. For extra durability during wear – stitch this seam again, stitching over original stitching line. No need to double stitch when using a serger!
If you forget to backstitch, no worries! Use a Double-Eyed Needle to re-thread serger tails into previous stitched seam!
And/or place a drop of Fray Block at the end of each seam.
Your One-Seam Cowl Neck Serger Scarf is complete!
Wear your One-Seam Cowl Neck Serger
Scarf
as a single layer, or twist for a cozy cowl neck version! Either version can be worn over the shoulder–to provide a cozy layer on chilly spring days.

Cut, sew, and finish in one step! Experience stitch quality at the highest level with the bernette 64 AIRLOCK Serger.
bernette 64 AIRLOCK Serger – The serger/overlocker with easy automatic air threading! Threading the looper has never been easier and quicker thanks to the color-coded threading paths; thread each looper separately or both together with one simple push!
For the first time on a bernette machine: The Micro Thread Control (mtc) saves you significant time and effort while ensuring consistent high-quality stitches, since you need only set thread tension once – even if you alter the cutting width and fabric thickness!
With 16 different stitches to choose from and a sewing speed up to 1300 stitches per minute, you will finish your project in no time with the bernette 64 AIRLOCK Serger! Stitch styles include variations of 4-thread and 3-thread overlock, rolled hem, picot stitch, super-stretch, narrow seam, and flat lock. Achieve optimal stitches – thanks to adjustable presser foot pressure.
The bernette 64 AIRLOCK Serger freearm makes it easy to sew sleeves, cuffs, legs, necklines, scarves, and other tubular projects.
The bernette 64 AIRLOCK Serger offers lots of space thanks to the large 5″+ (130mm) working area to the right of the needle, ideal for leading and catching heavy sewing projects behind the needle and gives you the space for all tasks in the needle and loop area: changing the presser foot, attaching upper looper converter and much more.
The easy to attach super-large slide-on table makes stitching and fabric guiding even more comfortable on the bernette 64 AIRLOCK Serger – especially for large sewing projects; the fabric will glide smoothly over the rounded shaped table.
5 LED lights in the needle and working area ensures a well-lit workspace for ease of stitching as well as threading of the loops and needles; the five LEDs facilitate precise and accurate work.
The bernette 64 AIRLOCK Serger Free Hand System with included knee lifter, allows your hands to remain free and comfortably position the fabric under the presser foot. Plus, easily lift and lower the presser foot – with your knee – by pushing the knee lifter.
Team NZP’s Eight Essential Serger Tools
Whether you’re an accomplished seamstress or a beginning sewist, in today’s blog posting we’re sharing our Eight Essential Serger Sewing Tools for making your next serging project a success!
Maxi-Lock Serger Cone Thread meets the demands of serger sewing and withstands the high speeds and tensions unique to serging. Soft thread finish disguises a strength that holds up under the most vigorous seamwork. Quality consistency, beginning to end, makes it easy to set and maintain tensions.
Schmetz ELx705 Serger Overlock Needles are essential for successful serging/overlocking! Schmetz ELx705 Serger Overlock Needles are designed for use in sergers and have a groove on the front side and back side – for reduced skipped stitches. Schmetz ELx705 Serger Overlock Needles have for less thread breakage and straighter stitches.
Machine Needle Threader threads serger needles with ease! Simply position a length of thread within the guide at the front of the threader. Then, push and slide the threader down the shaft of the needle. When the threader meets the eye of the needle, the needle threader will insert thread into the eye of the needle.
The Pro Tweezers is an ideal tool for threading overlock serger loopers. Precision tips provide precise thread handling in tight areas.
Thread Nets are made from a loose-netting and are placed over Serger Cone Threads. Thread Nets keep slick thread, such as Metallics, MonoPoly, and Trilobal polyesters, from “puddling” down around base of spool.
Double-Eyed Needles assist with finishing serged seams by securing chained thread ends or “tails” within the seam. Both needle ends feature a large eye for inserting threads. Smooth rounded ends allow chained thread tails to feed smoothly into previously stitched serger seams.
Fray Block prevents serger seams from “coming undone”. Ultra-fine applicator tip provides precise placement of Fray Block. Dries quickly, remains clear, and soft and flexible. Washable and dry cleanable.
Ceramic Blade Seam Ripper features a durable and safer ceramic blade – ideal for removing serger stitches. Rounded blade tip helps prevent accidental cuts in fabric. Blade manually retracts by sliding a button.
Serger Seam Ripper has a razor sharp blade for precision ripping! A serger seam ripper saves time when removing overlock stitches. Slip blade between fabric layers and cut overlock stitches. Use caution to not cut fabrics.
We hope you’ll try our Eight Essential Serging Tools, when making your next serging projects!
Team NZP is designing sewing projects and patterns to be sewn with Nancy Zieman’s innovative sewing techniques. Within each of our blog sewing tutorials and sewing patterns, we give you construction tips and specific sewing hints, along with tool tips to make sewing & serging fun and enjoyable – even for beginners! You’ll find that in a matter of minutes, you can serge fashion accessories with the NEW! bernette 64 AIRLOCK Serger – like our favorite Turtleneck Scarf!
