Prepare your fabrics! Pre-shrink fabrics by steaming and pressing. Then, stabilize fabrics for the sewing process by pressing and starching fabrics with Quilter’s Starch Savvy.

 You’re the designer! Audition your fat quarter fabric and create a layout.

We’ve arranged our layout as shown:

Cut Two 1-3/4″ x 15″ rectangles Gray Purrfect Day Fishbones

Cut Two 1-3/4″ x 18″ rectangles Gray Purrfect Day Triangles

We also used Gray Purrfect Day Triangles to bind our June Tailor Quilt as you go Cat Placemat. 

Cut 2-1/2″ Bias Fabric Strips to create a 2-1/2″ x 60″ bias fabric strip for binding.

 

Assemble Quilt As You Go: Cat Placemat

Place wrong side of backing fabric on fusible (unprinted) side of interfacing. Make sure backing fabric completely covers printed area.

We chose the Aqua Purrfect Day Fishbones Fat Quarter!

Set iron at wool with steam setting, using June Tailor’s Eze View Pressing Cloth , press backing fabric to fusible fleece, following manufactures instructions.

Turn mat printed side up, using Clover’s 28mm Rotary Cutter and cutting mat, cut out fish shape, leaving a scant 1/4″. Use June Tailor’s Fabric Glue Stick to hold piece one in place. Place piece one right side up.

Printed lines are for placement only and are not stitching lines!

Place 2-1/2″ x 6″ rectangle – two, onto 2-1/2″ x 6″ rectangle – one, right side together.Stitch with a scant 1/4″ on long side of the rectangle as shown.

Flip rectangle 2 right side up.Use June Tailors Magic Seam Wand  to press seam open.

Continue to place 2-1/2″ x 6″ rectangles by number, right sides together with previous pieces and aligning with placement lines.Stitch with a scant 1/4″ on long side of the rectangle as shown.Flip rectangles right side up.Use June Tailors Magic Seam Wand  to press seam open.

When placing pieces eight and nine, it’s ok that they overlap the edges, we will trim this later!

Center and place 1-3/4″ x 18″ rectangles Gray Purrfect Day Triangle ten and eleven right sides together.Stitch with a scant 1/4″ on long side of the rectangle as shown.Flip rectangles right side up.Use June Tailors Magic Seam Wand  to press seam open.

Center and place 1-3/4″ x 15″ rectangles Gray Purrfect Day Fishbones twelve and thirteen right sides together.Stitch with a scant 1/4″ on long side of the rectangle as shown.Flip rectangles right side up.Use June Tailors Magic Seam Wand  to press seam open.Before trimming excess fabric, bast stitch around the shape of placemat. Turn placemat wrong side up, using Clover’s 28mm Rotary Cutter and cutting mat, cut out fish shape, leaving a scant 1/4″ from seam allowance. Using your favorite binding technique , bind Quilt As You Go: Cat Placemat.

You can choose to bind the Quilt As You Go: Cat Placemat with Bias Binding as we did, or use pre-purchased trim or binding!

Preshrink fabrics by steaming and pressing, and steaming and pressing a second time, and then spray press and starch fabric with June Tailor’s Quilter’s Starch Savvy — press and starch, press and starch.

 

 

 

 

In today’s sewing tutorial, we’re making our Sew-In-A-Cinch Gift Bag in size small. 

Choose one outer bag fabric and one accent fabric.

Cut Fabric and Supplies

Cut two 4″ x 10″ rectangles for accent fabric strips.

Cut two 10″ x 13″ rectangles for outer gift bag.

Cut two 30″ lengths of ribbon and angle cut short ends to prevent fraying.

 

Stitch

Align one 4″ x 10″ rectangle with one 10″ x 13″ rectangle, right sides together, at bag top as shown.Pin.Stitch or serve top edge forming bag front.

Press seam towards bag.Repeat steps above and stitch bag back.Serge or zig zag around all outside edges of front and back bag units.

 

Align bag front with bag back, right sides together, matching seams at sides. Pin.

Set Clover’s Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge at 6″, and mark a line at 6″ below top edge along one side seam using Clover’s Chaco Liner.Adjust Clover’s Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge to 6-3/4″ and mark a second line below first marking.Repeat steps above and mark opposite side seam.

Assemble and Finish

Pin bag front to bag back along side seams.

Stitch side seams only.

Be sure to skip stitching between marked lines.

Press seams open using a seam stick.

At bag bottom, use Nancy Zieman’s “Wrapped Corner” technique to “wrap” sideseams toward bag center – folding along previous stitched line.

At sewing machine use Clover’s Straight Tailor’s Awl/ Stiletto to assist feeding fabric layers under presser foot and stitch bag bottom seam.

Fold accent strip to bag inside, along seam.Press.

Set Clover’s Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge to 3-1/4″, and mark a line across accent strip at 3-3/4″ below top fold – using Clover’s Chaco Liner.Adjust Clover’s Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge to 2-1/4″ and mark a second line across accent strip.

Repeat steps above marking lines on reverse side. Pin.Stitch in the round along marked lines.

Turn bag right side out.Use Clover’s Point 2 Point Turner to push out lower corners.Press.

 

Create Cinching Ribbon Ties

Using Clover’s Clip n Glide Bodkin, insert one ribbon into casing opening along one side seam.

Insert ribbon all the way around bag and exit at the same opening as inserted. Remove Clip ’n Glide Bodkin.

Tie a knot near ribbon ends.

Using Clover’s Clip n Glide Bodkin, insert a second ribbon into opening at opposite side seam.

Insert ribbon all the way around bag and exit at the same opening as inserted. Remove Clip ’n Glide Bodkin.

Tie a knot near ribbon ends.

Pull ribbons at opposite ends to cinch bag closed!

Optional: Create Lower Gussets

Turn bag inside out.Stack lower seam to side seam.Adjust Clover’s Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge to 1-1/2″ and align center of gauge to center of side seam.Mark a straight line at 1-1/2″ inside lower corner, as shown.

 

Stitch along marked line.Repeat steps above and stitch opposite lower corner gusset.

Add gussets to any bag to create a bag with depth. Note: Adding 1-1/2″ gussets at lower bag will shorten bag height by 1-1/2″.

Turn bag right side out.Pull ribbons at opposite ends to cinch bag closed!

Supersize 5 -in-1 Sliding Gauge Circle Compass FeatureHold the lower part of the “Push” mark on the Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge then move the gauge cursor to the 9″ marking. Insert the point of a Frixon Marking Pen into the opening while pressing the compass pivot point with your finger(at opposite end of gauge), then rotate gauge and mark circle line.

 

Cut out circle pattern on marked line.

 

You’re the designer! Choose to make Dinner Napkins with 18″ circles, Brunch Napkins with 16″ circles, or Cocktail Napkins from 12″ circles!

Cut Out Fabrics

Place fabric’s wrong sides together and pin circle pattern to fabric. And/or use Pattern Shape Weights to hold circle pattern in place.Cut two coordinating fabric circles for each napkin.

Place circles wrong sides together. Pin .

Set serger overlock machine for a 3-thread overlock stitch.Thread serger with Polyarn Serger Thread colors in upper and lower looper, and standard serger thread in needle.

 

Designed specifically for serger sewing, Polyarn has a “woolly-like” texture, resulting in increased stitch coverage! Polyarn is used in upper and lower loopers and is ideal for rolled hems, flatlocking, and chain stitching.

Stitch napkin edges with three-thread overlock serger stitch, trimming away 1/8″-1/4″ fabric.

Use a Double-Eyed Needle or a darning needle to bury ending threads between serger stitches.

Using an Eze-View Pressing Cloth , press napkin.

Fold Napkin into Christmas Tree Shape

Fold about 1/3 napkin top towards napkin back.

Fold about 1/3 napkin left edges toward napkin front.

Fold remaining right napkin edge to napkin back.

Prepare your fabrics! Pre-shrink fabrics by steaming and pressing. Then, stabilize fabrics for the sewing process by pressing and starching fabrics with Quilter’s Starch Savvy.

Cut Fabrics for Two July Quilt BlocksAll American Gnomes:Cut Two 3-1/2″ squares from White Background Fabric, we’re illustrating White Stars Tone on Tone Fabric.Cut One 3-7/8″ square from White Background Fabric. We’re using White Stars Tone on Tone Fabric.Cut One 3-1/2″ x 9-1/2″ rectangle from White Stars Tone on Tone Fabric.Cut One 3-1/2″ x 12-1/2″ rectangle from White Stars Tone on Tone Fabric.Cut One 3-7/8″ squares from All American Gnomes Words Blue Fabric. Note: you will have an extra 1/2 square triangle extra, label and put aside for later use.

For 3-1/2″ Squares, first cut a 3-1/2″ Crosswise Fabric Strip and sub-cut 3-1/2″ squares. Label and set unused squares aside for use in upcoming months.

Using the Exclusive No-Hassle Triangles Ruler by Team NZP, cut block squares above.

Construct Blocks

All seam allowances are scant 1/4″ unless otherwise stated. Half-Square Triangles (HSTs)

Create 1/2-square triangle blocks from White Stars Tone on Tone and All American Gnomes Words Blue fabrics.Align 3-7/8″ squares right sides together. Pin

Mark blocks using a Clover’s No-Hassle Triangles Gauge , and Clover’s White Marking Pen or a Frixion Marking Pen. The left side of the Clover’s No-Hassle Triangles Gauge is designated to create 1/2-square triangle quilt blocks. Depress button on sliding portion of the gauge, and move to 3-7/8″ half-square triangle setting.

With squares right sides together. Place Clover’s No-Hassle Triangles Gauge on block set, corner to corner. Match corner marks of gauge with corner of block sets. Mark fabric through center die cut openings on gauge, with Clover’s White Marking Pen or a Frixion Marking Pen. Repeat steps, marking all 3-7/8″ square block sets.

Stitch BlocksInsert a new Size 75 Schmetz Quilting Needle and attach 1/4″ Quilting Presser Foot to sewing machine.Align 1/4″ Quilting Presser Foot along one side of center mark, stitch.

Rotate blocks 180 degrees, stitch along the other side of center marked lines.

 

Cut block apart along center marked lines with a rotary cutter, ruler, and mat .

Press seams flat.Open blocks and press seams open or press towards darker fabric – using a Tailor’s Clapper to set the seams.

Note: you will have an extra 1/2 square triangle, label and put aside for later use.

Construct Block A

Layout half-square triangle blocks(if applicable), squares and rectangles as show below. Rotate blocks as needed.

Join Squares and RectanglesPlace blocks from rows right sides together, in pairs. Pin. Chain stitch from one block set to the next. Clip threads between.Press seams flat, then press open or to one side – using a Tailor’s Clapper to set the seams.Repeat steps above with bottom row.

Join Rows

Place top row to second row right sides together. Pin. Stitch.Press seams flat, then press open or to one side – using a Tailor’s Clapper to set the seams. Place third row to second row right sides together. Pin. Stitch.Press seams flat, then press open or to one side – using a Tailor’s Clapper to set the seams. Place fourth row to third row right sides together. Pin. Stitch.Press seams flat, then press open or to one side – using a Tailor’s Clapper to set the seams.Block A

No-Hassle Triangles Summer Table Runner Sewing Tutorial

Make an easy-to-sew table runner (or wall hanging!) with a few fabric rectangles & squares, half-square triangles, quarter-square triangles, and Team NZP’s FREE! No-Hassles Triangles Summer Table Runner Sewing Tutorial – below. With our step-by-step directions, and timesaving sewing tools, we’re confident you’ll add the No-Hassle Triangles Summer Table Runner to your stitching projects to-do list.

Made in the same style as the quilt projects featured in Nancy Zieman’s Quick Column Quilts book, the triangle blocks and column strips(fabric rectangles & squares) make for a fast, easy, and no-hassle assembly of this 21″ x 56-1/2″ table runner.

Tools, Fabrics, and Supplies:

2-1/4″ yards solid green fabric (background & backing)2/3 yard solid navy blue fabric (triangles & binding)Mechanical pencil or other fine-point marking pen Pellon’s Sew-In Fleece Batting , 22″ x 58″ Clover’s No-Hassle Triangles Gauge by Nancy Zieman Exclusive No-Hassle Triangles Ruler by Team NZP

Cutting Directions:

Green Fabric:

Cut one 21″ crosswise strip (backing).Cut one 10″ crosswise strip (backing).Cut one 5-1/4″ crosswise strip  (triangles).Cut one 4-7/8″ crosswise strip (triangles).Cut six 4-1/2″ crosswise strips (background).

Subcut the following  from the six green 4-1/2″ background strips:

Subcut four 4-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ squares.Subcut ten 4-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ rectangles.Subcut two 4-1/2″ x 10-1/2″ rectangles.Subcut four  4-1/2″ x 18-1/2″ rectangles.Subcut one  4-1/2″ x 20-1/2″ rectangles.

Navy Blue Fabric:

Cut one 4-7/8″ crosswise strip (triangles).Cut one  5-1/4″ crosswise strip (triangles).Cut four  2-1/2″ crosswise strips (binding).

First Step, Building the Half-Square Triangle Units

Create 12 Half-Square Triangle Units using the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge.

 

Set theNo-Hassle Triangles Gauge to 4-1/2″ block size on the left side of the gauge.  The left side notes Half-Square Triangle sizes. The gauge tells you what size blocks to cut, 4-7/8″.

Cut 4-7/8″ crosswise strips of green and blue. Layer a 4-7/8″ green strip on a 4-7/8″  blue strip and cut six square pairs, measuring 4-7/8″ x 4-7/8″.

Position the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge on a pair of squares.Use the fine point marking tool to draw a diagonal line.

Use a 1/4″ presser foot as a guide to stitch 1/4″ from the right and the left sides of the marked line.

Chain piece these half-square triangle shapes. Stitch one set of squares right after another. After creating a long “chain,” simply clip the threads to separate the units.

 

Take the stitched units to the rotary cutting mat and cut the two halves apart along the marked line.Open and press the seam allowances to the darker blue side.Second, Create Six Quarter-Square Triangle Units

Set the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge to 4-1/2″ block size on the right side of the gauge.  The right side notes Quarter-Square Triangle sizes. The gauge tells you what size blocks to cut, 5-1/4″.Cut 5-1/4″ crosswise strips of green and blue. Layer a 5-1/4″ green strip on a 5-1/4″ blue strip and cut square pairs, measuring 5-1/4″ x 5-1/4″.Place a blue and green square under the gauge and mark the diagonal line.Stitch 1/4″ from the marked line, following the guidelines for the Half-Square Triangle Units, in the first step, above. Cut the units apart and press. These blocks should measure 4-7/8″ x 4-7/8″.Lay one Half-Square Triangle block on another, matching right sides. It is important that the diagonal lines lock. You’ll feel this “lock” as the seams meet.

Set the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge  to 4-1/2″ on the left side of the gauge.Mark a diagonal line, perpendicular to the seamline.
Use a 1/4″  presser foot as a guide to stitch 1/4″ from the right and left sides of the marked line.

Chain piece the three units, stitching one right after another.Use rotary cutting tools to cut the units apart.Press the Quarter-Square Triangle Units.Third, Arrange Table Runner RowsArrange the table runner into rows as detailed below.Stitch the pieces using 1/4″ seam allowances.

Assemble the runner by joining the rows to each other, using 1/4″ seam allowances.Press the row seam allowances in one direction.

After all five rows are stitched, the No-Hassle Triangles Table Runner top is complete.

Create Backing

Cut the backing piece measuring 10″ x 42″ into two pieces measuring 10″ x 21″ each. Use those two pieces and the larger piece, 21″ x 42″ to assemble the table runner back as described below, using  1/4″ seam allowances.

Quilt and Finish the No-Hassle Triangles Summer Table Runner

Layer the quilt backing, seam-side-up, Sew-In Fleece Batting , and the table runner quilt top – to create a quilt sandwich. Pin.Machine quilt the table runner layers together with straight line machine quilt the table runner with The Ultimate Quilt ‘n Stitch Presser Foot.

Or, use free-motion quilting to machine quilt the table runner layers together.Trim away excess batting and backing fabric.Join the 2-1/2″ crosswise strips of  blue binding fabric, end-to-end, using 1/4″ seam allowances.Press the binding strip in half, lengthwise.Bind the table runner, using your favorite technique. Or, use Nancy Zieman’s Easy quilt binding instructions.
