• Schmetz Chrome Topstitching Needles Size 90
• Coordinating Thread
• Rotary Cutter
• 6″ x 24″ Rotary Cutting Ruler and Mat

Download and print Kelly’s Free Small Mitten Pattern, cut out on solid line.

 

Sew Mittens for Giving Sewing Tutorial

Download the Printable Mitten Pattern Medium/Large by Team NZP

Fold fleece in half, or layer two fleece pieces, place pattern on top and cut out four mitten shapes.

 

We chose to leave an extra inch at the mitten opening for finishing the cuff.

Set sewing machine for a wobble stitch and stitch a 1/4″ seam allowance around mittens, pivoting between thumb and first finger.

 

Set your sewing machine for a wobble stitch. A wobble stitch is a slight zigzag stitch set at 2.0-2.5 length and .5 width. This stitch appears as a straight stitch from the right side, while providing a slight amount of stretch to the seam.

Using a scissors, clip fleece at the “V” between thumb and first finger, being careful not to clip stitching.

Using the rounded part of Clover’s Point 2 Point Turner, turn mittens right sides out

Fold cuff inward 1/2″ and stitch cuff.

Your Mittens are complete!

Print the Medium/Small Mitten Pattern from the We All Sew Blog, or print Team NZP’s Medium/Large Pattern above, and sew as many mittens as you’d like! Once you have your mittens ready for donation, bring them to the BERNINA Area at The Nancy Zieman Sewing Studio, or take to your local participating BERNINA Dealer for donation on or before November 28, 2023.

Team NZP and the Stitch it! Sisters are excited to announce the 2023 Christmas Stocking Sewing Challenge, taking place November 3–27, 2023! You’re invited to join the 2023 NZP Christmas Stocking Sewing Challenge by stitching a Christmas Stocking and showcasing your sewing and quilting talents. Stocking entries may be any color palette, and may feature any sewing, quilting, or machine embroidery techniques and/or embellishments—use your imagination! Enter one Christmas Stocking that has been sewn within the last year and has not been entered into previous Nancy Zieman Productions Christmas Stocking Sewing Challenges. Following manufacturer’s instructions, fuse Pellon Flex- Foam to wrong side of 10″ x 16″ rectangles from Daisy Delight fabric – for lower outer bag front and bag back.

Following manufacturer’s instructions, fuse Pellon Flex- Foam to wrong side of 3″ x 16″ rectangles Domino Effect Black on Black – for upper outer bag front and back.

Following manufacturer’s instructions, fuse Pellon Flex- Foam to wrong side of 1-1/4″ x 22″ rectangles from Daisy Delight fabric – for bag handles.

Mark Bag Components for Stitching

Using a Frixion Marking pen, and a 6″ x 24″ ruler, mark a center stitching line 1-1/2″ from bottom long edge, on wrong side of 3″ x 16″ rectangle upper outer bag front assembly.

Repeat step above on upper outer bag back assembly.

Using Clover’s Chaco Liner, and a 6″ x 24 ” ruler, mark a 60° diagonal stitching line on right side of lower outer bag front.

Continue marking parallel lines at 1-1/2″ apart.

Rotate ruler and mark 60° lines in opposite direction.

Repeat marking steps above on lower outer bag back

Convert Machine to Single Needle Chain Stitch & Stitch Lower Bag Quilting–we’re showing stitches on a bernette b68 Overlock/Coverstitch Combo Serger.

With fabric right side up, stitch along marked lines using a single needle chainstitch–aligning marked line to center guideline marking on the toe of the presser foot, rotate and continue stitching on all marked lines, from anchor swatch onto bag lower front.Rotate and continue stitching on all marked lines onto bag lower front. Optional: Stitch from lower bag front assembly directly to lower bag back assembly.

Repeat step above with lower bag back assembly.

Stitch Upper Bag Decorative Center Stitch

Leave machine set for single needle chain stitch and replace standard overlock thread (black), thread chain looper with Sulky 12 wt. Cotton Thread (white).With 3″ x 16″ rectangle upper bag front assembly wrong side up, stitch along marked line with single needle chainstitch, aligning marked line to center guideline marking on presser foot toe.

Repeat steps above with 3″ x 16″ rectangle for upper bag back assembly.

Convert machine to a 3-Thread Wide Coverstitch.

Insert a size 90 Schmetz Chrome Topstitching Needle into right needle position.Insert standard overlock cone thread (black) into both needles and chain looper.With fabric right sides up, “kiss” one long edge of front upper bag assembly to one long edge of front lower bag assembly.

Flip bag front assembly over and re-stitch over previous coverstitching.

Repeat steps above and attache upper bag back assembly to lower bag back assembly.

Stitch Upper Bag Decorative Stitches

Convert machine to 3-Thread Narrow Coverstitch.Move needle to center needle position.Insert Sulky 12 wt. Cotton Thread (yellow) into chain looper.With bag assembly wrong side up, stitch along long side of center chain stitching – using the width of the presser foot as a guide.

Rotate bag assembly, roll the bag assembly as shown. and stitch second decorative stitching line.

Repeat steps above and stitch decorative narrow coverstitch stitching lines on bag back assembly.

Attach Jumbo Rickrack

 

Change both needle threads to coordinate with Rickrack!

With bag front assembly right side up, stitch Rickrack to bag, guiding presser foot down center bag seam.Do not cut threads.Lift presser foot and insert  bag back assembly right side up.Stitch Rickrack to bag back assembly.

Cut apart.Set aside

Following pattern or video instructions, create and attach bag handles, add lining, and complete your Clever Coverstitch Bag!

Construct Blocks

All seam allowances are scant 1/4″ unless otherwise stated.

Layout squares  as show below. Rotate blocks as needed.

    We’re over halfway through the 2023 BoM! Do you need more time to stitch your January through July Quilt Blocks? Fast-track this month’s August blocks by simply cutting four 12-1/2″ Blocks(and skip the seams). Then, use the extra time to catch up on your January through July Blocks!

  Be sure to label each block upon completion. This will help with assembly in December!

Approximate finished size: 19-1/2″ W x 19-1/2″ H

Cut Fabrics and Supplies

 

We’ve selected 10 Riley Blake Confetti Cotton Fabrics Fat Quarters. These high – quality solid fabrics make beautiful quilts and fused art!

Choose ten fat quarters for Fusible Fun Art front:

From each Fat Quarter: Cut one 8″ x 21″/22″ crosswise fabric strip.

Cut one 20″ x 20″ square from backing fabric, or seam together two fat quarters, we chose Key Lime.

Cut ten 8″ x 22″ rectangles from Wonder-Under.

Cut one 20″ x 20″ square from Pellon Peltex One-Sided Fusible Ultra-Firm Stabilizer.

Create Fusible Fun Art Components

Following manufacturer’s instructions, press Pellon Wonder-Under Interfacing to wrong side of one 8″ x 21″/22″ crosswise fabric strip. Note: Do not use steam.

 

To protect iron sole plate and ironing board from fusible web residue, use June Tailor’s Non-Stick Teflon Appliqué Pressing Sheet!

Repeat step above for remaining nine 8″ x 21″/22″ crosswise fabric strips.

Using a rotary cutter, ruler and mat, subcut one crosswise fabric strip into two 4″ x 21″/22″ rectangles.

Subcut one 4″ x 21″/22″ rectangle into 4″ squares.

Repeat steps above for remaining nine 4″ x 22″ rectangles.

On the Wonder-Under side of the second 4″ x 21″/22″ rectangle, draw 3″ circles using a pencil and Clover’s 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge.

 

Optional: Trace 3″ a circle on Templar Heat Resistant Template Material and create a reusable template!

Using a 6-3/4″ Bordeaux Ultimate Scissors, cut out circles.

Repeat steps above for remaining nine 4″ x 22″ rectangles.

 

 

You’re the designer! Audition your fabric squares and circles and create a layout.
We’ve arranged our layout as shown:

Position 20″ x 20″ square of Peltex rough side up, layer 20″ x 20″ square backing fabric to wrong side/rough side of Peltex.Using an iron and non-stick pressing sheet, fuse backing fabric to Peltex. Turn assembly over.

Assemble Fusible Fun Art Quilt

Using Clover’s Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge and fabric marking pen, find and mark the vertical and horizontal center of the 20″ x 20″ Peltex square.

Remove Wonder-Under paper backing from fabric squares. Place one fabric square over center marking and fuse into place – using an iron and non-stick pressing sheet.

Working clockwise around center square, fuse remaining squares in place, one at a time, making sure to overlap edges of each fabric square – with scant 1/4″ overlap.

 

You’re the designer! You may begin placing circles in the center, as shown, or choose to randomly position circles as you’d like!

Remove Wonder-Under paper backing from fabric circles. Place one fabric circle in center of the center square.

Working clockwise around center square, fuse circles in place – one at a time – using non-stick pressing sheet.

Using a rotary cutter, ruler and mat, trim excess Peltex and fabric from outer edges – and square your Fusible Fun Art Quilt!

 

Optional: Using Clover’s Ultimate Quilt ’n Stitch Presser Foot, Sulky 12 wt. Cotton Blendables Thread and Schmetz Denim Needles Size 90, and quilt your Fusible Fun Art Quilt with straight-line machine quilting!

Your Fusible Fun Art Quilt Wall Hanging is complete!
