Preshrink fabrics by steaming and pressing, and steaming and pressing a second time, and then spray press and starch fabric with June Tailor’s Quilter’s Starch Savvy — press and starch, press and starch.
In today’s sewing tutorial, we’re making our Sew-In-A-Cinch Gift Bag in size small.
Choose one outer bag fabric and one accent fabric.
Cut Fabric and Supplies
Cut two 4″ x 10″ rectangles for accent fabric strips.
Cut two 10″ x 13″ rectangles for outer gift bag.
Cut two 30″ lengths of ribbon and angle cut short ends to prevent fraying.
Stitch
Align one 4″ x 10″ rectangle with one 10″ x 13″ rectangle, right sides together, at bag top as shown.Pin.Stitch or serve top edge forming bag front.
Align bag front with bag back, right sides together, matching seams at sides. Pin.
Assemble and Finish
Pin bag front to bag back along side seams.
Create Cinching Ribbon Ties
Using Clover’s Clip n Glide Bodkin, insert one ribbon into casing opening along one side seam.
Optional: Create Lower Gussets
Turn bag inside out.Stack lower seam to side seam.Adjust Clover’s Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge to 1-1/2″ and align center of gauge to center of side seam.Mark a straight line at 1-1/2″ inside lower corner, as shown.
Stitch along marked line.Repeat steps above and stitch opposite lower corner gusset.
Add gussets to any bag to create a bag with depth. Note: Adding 1-1/2″ gussets at lower bag will shorten bag height by 1-1/2″.
Turn bag right side out.Pull ribbons at opposite ends to cinch bag closed!

Happy Thanksgiving! As we’re nearing the end of November, we’re in the midst of fall harvest here in Wisconsin. The roadside stands of pumpkins, squash, apples and gourds, bring brilliant color to the fading fall landscape. Using a tape measure, measure forehead circumference – just above eyebrows: If forehead circumference measures 20-1/2″- 21-1/2″ make a size Small/Medium Turtleneck Scarf. If forehead circumference measures 21-1/2″-22-1/2″ make a size Medium/Large Turtleneck Scarf. We’re making a size Small/Medium Turtleneck Scarf in this sewing tutorial.
Prepare your fabrics! Pre-treat fabric by steaming and pressing, then, stabilize fabrics for the sewing process by pressing and starching fabrics with June Tailor’s Quilters Starch Savvy. Press and starch, press and starch.
Cut One Fabric Rectangle 18″ long by 21″ wide for size Small/Medium. Be sure to cut the fabric rectangle with the greatest fabric stretch across the 21″ width. (For Size XS/Small cut one fabric rectangle 18″ long by 20″ wide. For size Medium/Large, cut one fabric rectangle 18″ long by 23″ wide: for a 10-1/2″ wide x 8-1/2 long finished scarf).NOTE: Deanna, from Team NZP, stitched a Turtleneck Scarf for her husband – with One Fabric Rectangle measuring 22-1/2″ long by 23-1/2″ wide – cut from 5/8 yd Stretch Jersey Knit Fabric. Or, you may be the designer and choose your own custom fabric rectangle size!
Stitch Turtleneck ScarfFold fabric rectangle, right sides together, meeting 21″ long edges.
Pin.
Our Turtleneck Scarf is the perfect project to stitch with a serger overlock machine! Place pins parallel to cut edges – when stitching with a serger.
Insert a new Schmetz Size 80/12 Jersey Chrome Sewing Machine Needle, and stitch seam with sewing machine set for a zig-zag wobble stitch , or stitch with an overlock stitch on a serger. Press seam flat, then press open or press to one side.
Stitch seam with serger – leaving an opening at markings.
When stitching with a flatbed serger, stitch seam with presser foot on the inside of the circular seam. Turn Scarf right side out through seam opening.
Before moving on to the finishing step, go ahead and try on your Turtleneck Scarf-in-process. Slip scarf over head and check for your desired fit. If scarf is too loose, turn inside out and restitch seam (above) taking a deeper seam allowance. Optional: Fuse a 3″ strip of
Clover’s 1/4″ Fusible Web Tape
to one inner seam allowance, at seam opening and fuse seam closed. Or, stitch opening closed with a sewing machine straight stitch, zigzag stitch, or hand stitching.
Change thread colors, and serge another turtleneck scarf!

When stitching with a serger with a free arm, stitch turtleneck seam with the presser foot on the outside of the circular seam!
