December 2023 NZP Block of the Month: Blocks Plus Assemble & Finish!

One block at a time is an easy approach to creating a quilt. Plus our BoM23 is fat quarter friendly. Prepare your fabrics! Pre-shrink fabrics by steaming and pressing. Then, stabilize fabrics for the sewing process by pressing and starching fabrics with Quilter’s Starch Savvy.

Using the  Exclusive No-Hassle Triangles Ruler by Team NZP, cut fabric strips and subcut into squares above as needed.

Construct Blocks

All seam allowances are scant 1/4″ unless otherwise stated. Half-Square Triangles (HSTs)

Create 1/2-square triangle blocks from White Stars Tone on Tone and All American Gnomes Words Blue fabrics.Align 3-7/8″ squares right sides together. Pin

Mark blocks using a  Clover’s No-Hassle Triangles Gauge , and  Clover’s White Marking Pen  or a  Frixion Marking Pen. The left side of the  Clover’s No-Hassle Triangles Gauge  is designated to create 1/2-square triangle quilt blocks. Depress button on sliding portion of the gauge, and move to 3-7/8″ half-square triangle setting.

With squares right sides together. Place  Clover’s No-Hassle Triangles Gauge  on block set, corner to corner. Match corner marks of gauge with corner of block sets. Mark fabric through center die cut openings on gauge, with  Clover’s White Marking Pen  or a  Frixion Marking Pen. Repeat steps, marking all 3-7/8″ square block sets.

Stitch BlocksInsert a new  Size 75 Schmetz Quilting Needle  and attach  1/4″ Quilting Presser Foot  to sewing machine.Align  1/4″ Quilting Presser Foot  along one side of center mark, stitch.

Rotate blocks 180 degrees, stitch along the other side of center marked lines.

 

Cut block apart along center marked lines with a  rotary cutter, ruler, and mat .

Press seams flat.Open blocks and press seams open or press towards darker fabric – using a  Tailor’s Clapper  to set the seams.

Construct Blocks

All seam allowances are scant 1/4″ unless otherwise stated.

Layout squares  as show below. Rotate blocks as needed.

Join ColumnsPlace first column to second column right sides together.  Pin. Stitch.Press seams flat, then press open or to one side – using a  Tailor’s Clapper  to set the seams.

Place first column set to second column set right sides together.  Pin. Stitch.Press seams flat, then press open or to one side – using a  Tailor’s Clapper  to set the seams.Join RowsPlace top row to second row right sides together.  Pin. Stitch.Press seams flat, then press open or to one side – using a  Tailor’s Clapper  to set the seams.Place third row to second row right sides together.  Pin. Lois Jane Ehlert was an American author and illustrator of children’s books, most having to do with nature. Ehlert won the Caldecott Honor for Color Zoo in 1990. Some of her other popular works included Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Cuckoo/Cucú: A Mexican Folktale/Un cuento folklórico Mexicano and Leaf Man.

Born on November 9, 1934, in Beaver Dam, WI. She learned how to make things with her hands by watching her parents. Her mother was a seamstress, from her, Lois gained her knowledge of fabric to use in her artwork.

Visit the mosaic murals on the east facing exterior wall of the Beaver Dam Area Community Theatre behind the Nancy Zieman Sewing Studio.

The four murals celebrate Nancy Zieman, Fred MacMurray, Lois Ehlert, and Eric Kalkhurst by artist Stephen Bennett. 12” square tiles were painted by community members. on the east facing exterior wall of the Beaver Dam Area Community Theatre.

You’re the designer, choose your favorite fabrics to create the Dresden Poinsettia Table Topper, Team NZP chose the following.

Prepare your fabrics! Pre-shrink fabrics by steaming and pressing. Then, stabilize fabrics for the sewing process by pressing and starching fabrics with Quilter’s Starch Savvy.

Dresden Poinsettia Table Topper

Approx. finished size 18″

We chose four coordinating fabrics, three will be Dresden wedges, one will be for center circle.

Cut 8″ Crosswise Fabric strips from three fabrics, Marbleized Crimson, Marbleized Scarlet Red, and Marbleized Forest Green.

Using the Easy Dresden Ruler Template cut Ten wedges from Marbleized Crimson.Using the Easy Dresden Ruler Template cut Five wedges from Marbleized Scarlet Red.Using the Easy Dresden Ruler Template cut Five wedges from Marbleized Forest Green.

Cut a total of 20 wedges per complete Dresden circle.Layout Dresden wedges as shown below.

 

Set sewing machine to a 2.0 stitch length.

Fold wedges right sides together, stitch wedges 1/4″.

Chain stitch wedges together.

Using Clover’s “Quick Cut” Thread Cutter  or scissors, clip threads between wedges.

Using Clover’s Point 2 Point turner, turn points right sides out.

Using Clover’s NEW! Hot Hemmer Square, align seam and diagonal marking, press.

 

Repeat steps above with all wedges.

With right sides together, stitch Dresden wedges.

Continue to stitch wedges together.

Five Dresden wedges will create one quarter of the Dresden circle.Press seams open or to one side.

Use Tailor’s Clapper to set seam.

Repeat steps above to create four quarters for the Dresden circle.

Stitch top two assemblies together.Stitch bottom two assemblies together.

Stitch top and bottom assemblies together.

 

Create Center Circle

Cut a one 4-1/2″ square from Marbleized Marigold Yellow and Pellon’s ShirTailor Interfacing, right sides together, glue dots facing up.

 

 

We’re making a 4″ center circle.

Using Clover’s 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge and Frixion Pen create 4″ Circle.

Pin

 

Stitch using a short stitch around circle.

 

When using a pinking blade, cut on the back side of cutting mat.

Use a rotary pinking blade to remove excess fabric, approx. 1/4″ from stitching line.

Remove the excess interfacing from within the circles, leaving approx.1″ of interfacing.

Remove the excess interfacing from within the circles, leaving approx.1″ of interfacing.

Turn the interfacing to the wrong side.Use a Clover’s Point 2 Point Turner to smooth the curves.

Using June Tailor’s Eze-View Pressing Cloth press ShirTailor Interfacing to wrong side of fabric.

Center Dresden Poinsettia.

Using Clover’s 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge, enter center circle onto Dresden Poinsettia assembly.

Pin and edgestitch with coordinating or monofilament thread. Choose a straight stitch, blanket stitch, or other decorative stitch.

Add Backing

 

Team NZP chose Wool Felt for backing.

Turn table mat wrong side up.Measure the diameter from valley to valley of matching wedge.

Subtract an 1/8″ to 1/4″ from this measurement.Using Clover’s Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge and Frixion Marking Pen, create backing circle on wool felt.

Cut out backing circle.

 

Pin or use fabric glue to hold backing in place.Place backing on wrong side of sunflower table mat.

Hand stitch Wool Felt backing in place around the perimeter, catching finished points.

Your Dresden Table Mat is complete!
