Machine Needle Threader threads serger needles with ease! Simply position a length of thread within the guide at the front of the threader. Following manufacturer’s instructions, fuse Pellon Flex- Foam to wrong side of 1-1/4″ x 22″ rectangles from Daisy Delight fabric – for bag handles.
Mark Bag Components for Stitching
Using a Frixion Marking pen, and a 6″ x 24″ ruler, mark a center stitching line 1-1/2″ from bottom long edge, on wrong side of 3″ x 16″ rectangle upper outer bag front assembly.
Continue marking parallel lines at 1-1/2″ apart.
Rotate ruler and mark 60° lines in opposite direction.
Repeat marking steps above on lower outer bag back
Convert Machine to Single Needle Chain Stitch & Stitch Lower Bag Quilting–we’re showing stitches on a bernette b68 Overlock/Coverstitch Combo Serger.
With fabric right side up, stitch along marked lines using a single needle chainstitch–aligning marked line to center guideline marking on the toe of the presser foot, rotate and continue stitching on all marked lines, from anchor swatch onto bag lower front.Rotate and continue stitching on all marked lines onto bag lower front.
Optional: Stitch from lower bag front assembly directly to lower bag back assembly.
Stitch Upper Bag Decorative Center Stitch
Leave machine set for single needle chain stitch and replace standard overlock thread (black), thread chain looper with Sulky 12 wt. Cotton Thread (white).With 3″ x 16″ rectangle upper bag front assembly wrong side up, stitch along marked line with single needle chainstitch, aligning marked line to center guideline marking on presser foot toe.
Convert machine to a 3-Thread Wide Coverstitch.
Insert a size 90 Schmetz Chrome Topstitching Needle into right needle position.Insert standard overlock cone thread (black) into both needles and chain looper.With fabric right sides up, “kiss” one long edge of front upper bag assembly to one long edge of front lower bag assembly.
Stitch Upper Bag Decorative Stitches
Convert machine to 3-Thread Narrow Coverstitch.Move needle to center needle position.Insert Sulky 12 wt. Cotton Thread (yellow) into chain looper.With bag assembly wrong side up, stitch along long side of center chain stitching – using the width of the presser foot as a guide.
Attach Jumbo Rickrack
Change both needle threads to coordinate with Rickrack!
With bag front assembly right side up, stitch Rickrack to bag, guiding presser foot down center bag seam.Do not cut threads.Lift presser foot and insert bag back assembly right side up.Stitch Rickrack to bag back assembly.
Following pattern or video instructions, create and attach bag handles, add lining, and complete your Clever Coverstitch Bag!

Stitch it! Sisters Absolute Easiest Way to Sew Quilt Binding Sewing Tutorial
Create Binding
Using a Rotary Cutter, Ruler and, mat, cut four 2-1/4″ x 22″ Burgundy Cotton Shades fabric strips and three 2-1/4″ x 22″ Grape Cotton Shades.
With right sides together, place one Burgundy fabric strip to one Grape fabric strip, offsetting strips 1/2″.Stitch short ends of strips, using a diagonal seam, connecting angle intersections.Trim seam allowances to 1/4′.
Stitch remaining fabric strips together, alternating Burgundy and Grape Cotton Shades – as shown – to create binding.
Using a Rotary Cutter, Ruler and mat, cut strip in half at a 45-degree angle.
Attach Binding
Fold under end of binding, press.
Press binding away from quilt center.
For a nearly “invisible” seam, stitch binding to quilt, stitching in the “ditch” with Monofilament Thread.

Nancy Zieman’s Quick Column Quilts Round Up
It’s National Quilting Month and we’re celebrating with a Nancy Zieman Quick Column Quilts Sewing Round Up! Modern, streamlined, quick – with characteristics such as these, the Nancy Zieman’s Quick Column Quilting methods will no doubt soon become your go-to form of patchwork.

Nancy‘s Original Column Quilt
This easy-to-piece design can be made into a double- or full-size bed quilt. The gradation of colors provides great visual impact! Nancy found inspiration for this quilt design from a beach towel that was left behind at her home – by a friend of the family.
Nancy modified the original column quilt (above) and created this super-quick quilt design — to make and donate to individuals and families in need. The quilt is easily made from a fabric stash, with perhaps few purchased fabric additions. The center of each column features scrappy patchwork. You can easily create a Quilt to Give by yourself, or invite friends to sew with you—like we do each September at The Great Wisconsin Quilt Show in Madison, Wis.
No matter the size—lap to king—you can sew this quilt in a heartbeat! Colorful accent strips in a variety of widths make up Nancy’s heartbeat quilt pattern, while the subdued one-color strips add a perfect background for the design.
Nancy’s Interrupted Columns quilt is a speedy-to-make queen-size quilt designed with a very easy lesson in color coordination. Simply find a print you love for the sashing, and choose five colors from the print to use for the column solid color fabrics. The interruptions—horizontal strips—stop the lengthwise movement while creating a more artistic appeal.
Fat quarters, those convenient fabric cuts approximately 18″ x 21″, are ideal for this carefree column quilt. Made with six fat quarter cuts and one background fabric, this lap quilt is ideal for bright fabric choices or large-scale prints.
The wind chimes hanging from the deck at Nancy’s home served as the inspiration for this Wind Chime Column Quilt. Just like real wind chimes, the angled accent pieces, seem to move as if gently nudged by the wind.
No half-square triangles are needed to make the artistic “flying geese” in Nancy’s Folded Flying Geese wall hanging. Start with simple fabric squares, fold three times, and presto – the folded triangles create 3-dimensional Flying Geese. Plus, the background columns are not cut, but rather one piece of fabric. Hmm, it’s kinda interesting!
Are you looking for a stash buster or a scrap quilt project? Nancy’s Folded Scrappy Column Quilt is the answer! The steps are simple: fold, then quilt. There are no pieced triangles and zero bias cut edges. This three-dimensional project has guidelines, rather than an exact pattern, so it is perfect for every size fabric scrap in your stash. Talk about easy!
Switch it up and making an abstract wall hanging with Nancy’s column-quilting techniques, and a few fun fabrics. This artistic silk dupioni wall hanging includes “dotted columns” or circles appliquéd over the easy-to-create columns.
Use novel piecing techniques in Nancy’s Happy-Go-Lucky Chevron Column Quilt. Mix and match the wide and narrow strips of fabric to create care-free chevron columns. No matching necessary—use only straight stitching.
At first glance, our Hit-and-Miss Table Runner looks like it is pieced with traditional hexagons. Not so with Nancy’s speedy column quilt design. The hexagon shapes are created with two halves, eliminating the intersection of three seams, otherwise known as Y-seams. With this technique, faux-hexagon halves are stitched in columns with relative speed and ease. Plus, the results are dramatic!
Take a recognizable tumbler quilt design and turn it on its side. Nancy combines several sizes of tumbler shapes to create this modern quilt design – that breaks most sewing rules. And, the piecing is super-simple!
This Floating Squares Column double-sized quilt looks difficult to make, but not so! The darker squares “float” on the light background of the quilt top, made with some creative cutting and sewing of crosswise strips. Not to worry, you’ll not be required to cut squares, Nancy opted for a quick-to-make column quilt technique!

Cut Fabrics for FIVE March 2024 Block of the Month Quilt Blocks Bali Batik Tropical Cove :Cut Ten 3-7/8″ squares from Bali Batik Tropical Cove Pathways Lime Fabric.Cut Ten 3-7/8″ squares from Background Fabric.
All seam allowances are scant 1/4″ unless otherwise stated.
Half-Square Triangles (HSTs)
Create TEN 1/2-square triangle blocks cut from Bali Batik Tropical Cove Pathways Lime and Background Fabric.Align 3-7/8″ squares right sides together, in pairs of lights and darks. Pin.Mark blocks using a Clover’s No-Hassle Triangles Gauge , and Clover’s Fine Marking Pen or a Frixion Marking Pen. The left side of the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge is designated to create 1/2-square triangle quilt blocks. Depress button on sliding portion of the gauge, and move to 3-7/8″ half-square triangle setting.
Construct Block
Repeat steps above stitching all FIVE March Prismatics Blocks.
