Prepare your fabrics! Pre-shrink fabrics by steaming and pressing. Then, stabilize fabrics for the sewing process by pressing and starching fabrics with Quilter’s Starch Savvy.

May 2024 NZP Block of the Month Quilt Blocks

This block is 6-1/2″ square; 6″ finished square.

Approx. Finished Quilt Size 60″ x 72″

This month we’re featuring Nine blocks. Follow along as we demonstrate how to create the May 2024 Block of the Month Quilt Blocks.

Cut Fabrics for Nine May 2024 Block of the Month Quilt Blocks Bali Batik Tropical Cove :Cut Two 6-7/8″ squares from Bali Batik Tropical Cove  Cane Leaf Berry/Yellow Fabric.Cut Three 6-7/8″ squares from Bali Batik Tropical Cove  Cane Leaf Yellow/Multi Fabric.Cut Five 6-7/8″ squares from Background Fabric.

Using the Exclusive No-Hassle Triangles Ruler by Team NZP,  cut block squares above.

Construct Blocks

All seam allowances are scant 1/4″ unless otherwise stated.

Half-Square Triangles (HSTs)

Create Six 1/2-square triangle blocks cut from Bali Batik Tropical Cove  Cane Leaf Berry/Yellow and Background Fabric. Only five will be used.Create Four 1/2-square triangle blocks cut from Bali Batik Tropical Cove  Cane Leaf Yellow/Multi and Background Fabric.Align 6-7/8″ squares right sides together, in pairs of lights and darks. Pin.

Mark blocks using a Clover’s No-Hassle Triangles Gauge , and Clover’s Fine Marking Pen or a Frixion Marking Pen. The left side of the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge is designated to create 1/2-square triangle quilt blocks. Depress button on sliding portion of the gauge, and move to 6-7/8″ half-square triangle setting.

With squares right sides together. Place Clover’s No-Hassle Triangles Gauge on block set, corner to corner. Match corner marks of gauge with corner of block sets. Mark fabric through center die cut openings on gauge, with Clover’s Fine Marking Pen or a Frixion Marking Pen. Repeat steps, marking all 6-7/8″ square block sets.

Stitch BlocksInsert a new Size 75 Schmetz Quilting Needle and attach 1/4″ Quilting Presser Foot to sewing machine.Align 1/4″ Quilting Presser Foot along one side of center mark, stitch.“Kiss” the next block set to the stitched block and chain stitch (stitching continually) from one block to the next.

Rotate blocks 180 degrees, stitch along the other side of center marked lines.

Clip threads between chain stitched blocks.

Cut blocks apart along center marked lines with a rotary cutter, ruler, and mat .

Press seams flat.Open blocks and press seams open or press seams towards darker fabric – using a Tailor’s Clapper to set the seams.

You have created Five 6-1/2″ 1/2-square triangle blocks cut from Bali Batik Tropical Cove  Cane Leaf  Yellow/Multi and background fabrics, and Four 1/2-square triangle blocks cut from Bali Batik Tropical Cove  Cane Leaf Berry/Yellow and Background Fabric.

The May Bali Batik Tropical Cove Quilt Blocks Are Complete! May 2024 NZP Block of the Month Quilt Blocks
Repeat steps above stitching all NINE May Prismatics Blocks.

This block is 6-1/2″ square; 6″ finished square.

You have created Six 6-1/2″ 1/2-square triangle blocks cut from Prismatics  Glass Turquoise and background fabric! Only five will be used.You have created Four 6-1/2″ 1/2-square triangle blocks cut from Prismatics  Crushed Glass Fuchsia Fabric.

Find a straight line on the quilt.Choose a Sulky 12 wt. thread for decorative stitching.Insert a new Schmetz Chrome Quilting Needle size 90.Set machine to a longer stitch length such as 3.0.Work from the center out and stitch one line using the edge of the presser foot for your stitching line, or set guide to desired measurement.Continue stitching up and down rotating quilt.

Straight Line Machine Quilting from One Marked Line:

Mark one line using a ruler and erasable fabric marking pen.Choose a Sulky 12 wt. thread for decorative stitching.Insert a new Schmetz Chrome Quilting Needle size 90.Set machine to a longer stitch length such as 3.0.Work from the center out and stitch one line using the edge of the presser foot for your stitching line, or set guide to desired measurement.Continue stitching up and down rotating quilt.

 

Echo Quilting from No Marked Lines:

Stitch around shape(s) with edge of presser foot, advancing foot one row inward using previously stitched line as a guide.Choose a Sulky 12 wt. thread for decorative stitching.Insert a new Schmetz Chrome Quilting Needle size 90.Set machine to a longer stitch length such as 3.0.Work from the outside in and stitch one line using the edge of the presser foot for your stitching line.Continue stitching rotating quilt.

Curved Straight Line Machine Quilting:

Using Clover’s 5-in-1 Supersize Sliding Gauge, and erasable fabric marking pen, depress the button and mark an arch line.Using a ruler extend the curved line to the edge of the quilt.Stitch on line with edge of presser foot, advancing foot one row inward using previously stitched line as a guide.Choose a Sulky 12 wt. thread for decorative stitching.Insert a new Schmetz Chrome Quilting Needle size 90.Set machine to a longer stitch length such as 3.0.Work from the center out and stitch one line using the edge of the presser foot for your stitching line, or set guide to desired measurement.Work from the center out and stitch one line using the edge of the presser foot for your stitching line, or set guide to desired measurement.Continue stitching rotating quilt.

Custom Machine Quilting from No Marked Lines:

Place a piece of painters tape as a built in guide at desired measurement as a guide, when painters tape reaches edge of quilt, stop with needle down raise presser foot and pivot. Continue stitching as desired, working inward.Choose a Sulky 12 wt. thread for decorative stitching.Insert a new Schmetz Chrome Quilting Needle size 90.Set machine to a longer stitch length such as 3.0.Continue stitching rotating quilt.

Our One-Seam Skirt has no elastic casing and is so fast to make – you’ll be sewing this summer wardrobe staple in two hours or less with our sewing tutorial, below! Soft to the touch, and easy to sew, crepe knits are ideal for sewing dresses, tunics, tops, skirts, scarves and more! Prepare your fabrics! Pre-shrink fabrics by steaming and pressing. Then, stabilize fabrics for the sewing process by pressing and starching fabrics with Quilter’s Starch Savvy.

 

One-Seam Skirt

Finished Measurements
Approx. side length from waist: 32″ L

Cut Fabrics and Supplies

Cut four 1″ x 17″ strips Pellon Wonder-Under Fusible Web.Using a tape measure, measure waist.

Cut elastic 2″ shorter that waist measurement.

Mark knit skirt rectangle 34″ long, by waist measurement plus 2″- 6″.

 

Before cutting skirt rectangle, wrap greatest stretch of fabric rectangle around waist and test-fit through hips. Mark rectangle skirt width with pins – with desired ease in mind. Reminder to allow an additional 1/2″ for seam allowances.

Using pins, quarter-mark elastic and upper edge skirt fabric.

Place elastic to skirt top, right sides together, aligning edges and matching quarter-markings. Pin.Stretch elastic to meet fabric, and secure with additional pins.Insert a new Size 80/12 Jersey Needle into machine.

 

When attaching elastic to skirt with a flatlock stitch on a serger, place elastic to skirt with right sides together, and place pins parallel to cut edge.

 

 

When stitching elastic to skirt with a sewing machine, set sewing machine for a “wobble-stitch”: Choose a slight zigzag (2.0-2.5 length and .5 width). On the outside, this stitch will give the appearance of a straight stitch, while providing a slight amount of stretch to the seam! Or, choose a 4-thread overlock serger stitch. Now’s the perfect time to use a serger!

Stitch or serge seam with 1/4″ seam allowance, or use presser foot edge as a guide.Stitch elastic to skirt top, stretching elastic as you sew.Be sure to backstitch at seam beginning and ending – when stitching with a sewing machine.

 

Fold elastic up and gently open the flatlock serger stitches – revealing the ‘ladder’ stitches.

Place skirt right sides together and pin along side seam.

Using 1/4″ seam allowance, stitch side seam with 4-Thread serger over lock seam. Or stitch with a wobble stitch on a sewing machine.Insert stitched serger thread tails into eye of a double eye needle. Insert needle into stitched seam, threading tail back through stitched seam.

Add a drop of Fray Block, and cut away excess thread tail.

 

Finish One-Seam Skirt

Fold elastic to skirt inside with wrong sides together. Pin at side seam and at halfway – point (where a second side seam would usually be positioned).

With sewing machine wobble stitch, topstitch along side seam, and halfway mark, securing elastic inside skirt.

 

You’re the designer! Choose your desired skirt length plus 1″, and shorten skirt by trimming away extra fabric.

Using Clover’s Hot Ruler, Eze-View Press Cloth and iron, turn up lower skirt and press 1″ lower hem.

Following manufacturer’s instructions, press 1″ strips of Pellon Wonder-Under Fusible Web to wrong side of skirt hem.

Remove paper backing from Wonder Under.Using Eze-View Press Cloth and iron, turn up and press 1″ lower hem.

Stitch hem with a serger cover stitch, or stitch hem using wobble stitch, blind hem stitch, or topstitch with Double Needle stitching.
