Prepare your fabrics! Pre-shrink fabrics by steaming and pressing. Then, stabilize fabrics for the sewing process by pressing and starching fabrics with Quilter’s Starch Savvy.

July 2024 NZP Block of the Month Quilt Blocks

This block is 6-1/2″ square; 6″ finished square.

Approx. Finished Quilt Size 60″ x 72″

This month we’re featuring Four blocks. Follow along as we demonstrate how to create the July 2024 Block of the Month Quilt Blocks.

Cut Fabrics for Four July 2024 Block of the Month Quilt Blocks Bali Batik Tropical Cove :Cut Two 6-7/8″ squares from Bali Batik Tropical Cove Pathways Purple Fabric.Cut Two 6-7/8″ squares from Background Fabric.

Using the Exclusive No-Hassle Triangles Ruler by Team NZP, cut block squares above.

Construct Blocks

All seam allowances are scant 1/4″ unless otherwise stated.

Half-Square Triangles (HSTs)

Create Four 1/2-square triangle blocks cut from Bali Batik Tropical Cove Pathways Purple and Background Fabric.Align 6-7/8″ squares right sides together, in pairs of lights and darks. Pin.

Mark blocks using a Clover’s No-Hassle Triangles Gauge , and Clover’s Fine Marking Pen or a Frixion Marking Pen. The left side of the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge is designated to create 1/2-square triangle quilt blocks. Depress button on sliding portion of the gauge, and move to 6-7/8″ half-square triangle setting.

With squares right sides together. Place Clover’s No-Hassle Triangles Gauge on block set, corner to corner. Match corner marks of gauge with corner of block sets. Mark fabric through center die cut openings on gauge, with Clover’s Fine Marking Pen or a Frixion Marking Pen. Repeat steps, marking all 6-7/8″ square block sets.

Stitch BlocksInsert a new Size 75 Schmetz Quilting Needle and attach 1/4″ Quilting Presser Foot to sewing machine.Align 1/4″ Quilting Presser Foot along one side of center mark, stitch.“Kiss” the next block set to the stitched block and chain stitch (stitching continually) from one block to the next.

Rotate blocks 180 degrees, stitch along the other side of center marked lines.

 

Clip threads between chain stitched blocks.

Cut blocks apart along center marked lines with a rotary cutter, ruler, and mat .

Press seams flat.Open blocks and press seams open or press seams towards darker fabric – using a Tailor’s Clapper to set the seams.

You have created Four 6-1/2″ 1/2-square triangle blocks cut from Bali Batik Tropical Cove Pathways Purple and background fabrics.

Repeat steps above stitching all Four July Prismatics Blocks.

This block is 6-1/2″ square; 6″ finished square.

Christmas Tree Napkin Serger Tutorial

Prepare Fabrics

We’re featuring Christmas Christmas Memories Plaid and Christmas Memories Holly Berries Green Fabric , and  Polyarn Serger Thread in Red & Green.

 

One yard each of two coordinating fabrics makes four Christmas Tree Dinner Napkins.

 

Streamline the cutting process and make a paper pattern!

Make Pattern

Make our 30-Minute Christmas Tree Serger Napkins with Clover’s Supersize 5 -in-1 Sliding Gauge and Pattern Making Paper .

Trace an 18″ circle on Pattern Making Paper with Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge.

Supersize 5 -in-1 Sliding Gauge Circle Compass FeatureHold the lower part of the “Push” mark on the Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge then move the gauge cursor to the 9″ marking. Insert the point of a Frixon Marking Pen into the opening while pressing the compass pivot point with your finger(at opposite end of gauge), then rotate gauge and mark circle line.

 

Cut out circle pattern on marked line.

 

You’re the designer! Choose to make Dinner Napkins with 18″ circles, Brunch Napkins with 16″ circles, or Cocktail Napkins from 12″ circles!

Cut Out Fabrics

Place fabric’s wrong sides together and pin circle pattern to fabric. And/or use Pattern Shape Weights to hold circle pattern in place.Cut two coordinating fabric circles for each napkin.

Place circles wrong sides together. Pin .

Set serger overlock machine for a 3-thread overlock stitch.Thread serger with Polyarn Serger Thread colors in upper and lower looper, and standard serger thread in needle.

 

Designed specifically for serger sewing, Polyarn has a “woolly-like” texture, resulting in increased stitch coverage! Polyarn is used in upper and lower loopers and is ideal for rolled hems, flatlocking, and chain stitching.

Stitch napkin edges with three-thread overlock serger stitch, trimming away 1/8″-1/4″ fabric.

Use a Double-Eyed Needle or a darning needle to bury ending threads between serger stitches.

Using an Eze-View Pressing Cloth , press napkin.

Fold Napkin into Christmas Tree Shape

Fold about 1/3 napkin top towards napkin back.

Fold about 1/3 napkin left edges toward napkin front.

Fold remaining right napkin edge to napkin back.

No-Hassle Triangles Summer Table Runner Sewing Tutorial

Make an easy-to-sew table runner (or wall hanging!) with a few fabric rectangles & squares, half-square triangles, quarter-square triangles, and our step-by-step No-Hassles Triangles Summer Table Runner Sewing Tutorial – below. Made in the same style as the quilt projects featured in Nancy Zieman’s Quick Column Quilts book, the triangle blocks and column strips(fabric rectangles & squares) make for a fast, easy, and no-hassle assembly of this 21″ x 56-1/2″ table runner.

Tools, Fabrics, and Supplies:

2-1/4″ yards solid green fabric (background & backing)2/3 yard solid navy blue fabric (triangles & binding)Mechanical pencil or other fine-point marking pen Pellon’s Sew-In Fleece Batting , 22″ x 58″ Clover’s No-Hassle Triangles Gauge by Nancy Zieman Exclusive No-Hassle Triangles Ruler by Team NZP

Cutting Directions:

Green Fabric:

Cut one 21″ crosswise strip (backing).Cut one 10″ crosswise strip (backing).Cut one 5-1/4″ crosswise strip  (triangles).Cut one 4-7/8″ crosswise strip (triangles).Cut six 4-1/2″ crosswise strips (background).

Subcut the following  from the six green 4-1/2″ background strips:

Subcut four 4-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ squares.Subcut ten 4-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ rectangles.Subcut two 4-1/2″ x 10-1/2″ rectangles.Subcut four  4-1/2″ x 18-1/2″ rectangles.Subcut one  4-1/2″ x 20-1/2″ rectangles.

Navy Blue Fabric:

Cut one 4-7/8″ crosswise strip (triangles).Cut one  5-1/4″ crosswise strip (triangles).Cut four  2-1/2″ crosswise strips (binding).

First Step, Building the Half-Square Triangle Units

Create 12 Half-Square Triangle Units using the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge.

 

Set theNo-Hassle Triangles Gauge to 4-1/2″ block size on the left side of the gauge.  The left side notes Half-Square Triangle sizes. The gauge tells you what size blocks to cut, 4-7/8″.

Cut 4-7/8″ crosswise strips of green and blue. Layer a 4-7/8″ green strip on a 4-7/8″  blue strip and cut six square pairs, measuring 4-7/8″ x 4-7/8″.

Position the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge on a pair of squares.Use the fine point marking tool to draw a diagonal line.

Use a 1/4″ presser foot as a guide to stitch 1/4″ from the right and the left sides of the marked line.

Chain piece these half-square triangle shapes. Stitch one set of squares right after another. After creating a long “chain,” simply clip the threads to separate the units.

 

Take the stitched units to the rotary cutting mat and cut the two halves apart along the marked line.Open and press the seam allowances to the darker blue side.Second, Create Six Quarter-Square Triangle Units

Set the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge to 4-1/2″ block size on the right side of the gauge.  The right side notes Quarter-Square Triangle sizes. The gauge tells you what size blocks to cut, 5-1/4″.Cut 5-1/4″ crosswise strips of green and blue. Layer a 5-1/4″ green strip on a 5-1/4″ blue strip and cut square pairs, measuring 5-1/4″ x 5-1/4″.Place a blue and green square under the gauge and mark the diagonal line.Stitch 1/4″ from the marked line, following the guidelines for the Half-Square Triangle Units, in the first step, above. Cut the units apart and press. These blocks should measure 4-7/8″ x 4-7/8″.Lay one Half-Square Triangle block on another, matching right sides. It is important that the diagonal lines lock. You’ll feel this “lock” as the seams meet.

Set the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge  to 4-1/2″ on the left side of the gauge.Mark a diagonal line, perpendicular to the seamline.
Use a 1/4″  presser foot as a guide to stitch 1/4″ from the right and left sides of the marked line.

Chain piece the three units, stitching one right after another.Use rotary cutting tools to cut the units apart.Press the Quarter-Square Triangle Units.Third, Arrange Table Runner RowsArrange the table runner into rows as detailed below.Stitch the pieces using 1/4″ seam allowances.

Assemble the runner by joining the rows to each other, using 1/4″ seam allowances.Press the row seam allowances in one direction.

After all five rows are stitched, the No-Hassle Triangles Table Runner top is complete.

Create Backing

Cut the backing piece measuring 10″ x 42″ into two pieces measuring 10″ x 21″ each. Use those two pieces and the larger piece, 21″ x 42″ to assemble the table runner back as described below, using  1/4″ seam allowances.

Quilt and Finish the No-Hassle Triangles Summer Table Runner

Layer the quilt backing, seam-side-up, Sew-In Fleece Batting , and the table runner quilt top – to create a quilt sandwich. Pin.Machine quilt the table runner layers together with straight line machine quilt the table runner with The Ultimate Quilt ‘n Stitch Presser Foot.

Or, use free-motion quilting to machine quilt the table runner layers together.Trim away excess batting and backing fabric.Join the 2-1/2″ crosswise strips of  blue binding fabric, end-to-end, using 1/4″ seam allowances.Press the binding strip in half, lengthwise.Bind the table runner, using your favorite technique. Or, use Nancy Zieman’s Easy quilt binding instructions.

In today’s blog posting, we’re spotlighting a few of our favorite Clover Fiber Arts Tools and what you’ll need to get started on your next travel-friendly project.

Punch Needlework is created with a series of hand-stitched straight stitches, created with a Punch Needle Tool and medium-weight to bulky-weight yarns. Projects can be made in a variety of sizes and include coasters, wall hangings, purses, pillows and rugs.

Insert medium weight to bulky weight yarn into Clover’s Punch Needle Tool .

Stitch as if you were drawing a picture! Working from the reverse side of Natural Monk’s Cloth , use Clover’s Punch Needle Tool to create a series of straight stitches with medium-weight to bulky yarn. Yarn loops form on the right side of the Natural Monk’s Cloth .

Natural Monk’s Cloth is the go-to fabric for Punch Needle , rug hooking, and Swedish weaving. Natural Monk’s Cloth is sold by the Yard. This 100% cotton, soft basket-weave/open-weave 14-count fabric is available in a 59/60″ wide. A white line is woven into the natural fabric every two inches–to aid in positioning patterns, or to frame squarely in a hoop or frame. 24 x 26 threads per inch.

 

Transfer a pattern or draw an original design onto Natural Monk’s Cloth fabric and follow the pattern– punching the needle into the fabric. Find inspiration and patterns in the Pretty Punch Needle Book!

Embroidery Stitching Tool by Clover

Stitches as quickly as if you were drawing a picture!Make a variety of stitches by thrusting the needle into the fabric in the same way—backstitch, loop stitch, and satin stitch.

Embroidery Stitching Tool by Clover is designed for use with No. 25 embroidery thread and No. 40 lace yarn or any thread with similar thickness. Choose a project fabric that is a medium/heavy-weight and tightly woven, such as poplin, denim, oxford, felt, etc.

Clover’s Needle Felting Tool has five barbed needles that catch wool roving fibers and pushes them into the base fabric/project.

The brush-like Needle Felting Mat enables smooth punching with little resistance, and allows the fibers of the applique to mesh well with the base fabric.

Natural Wool Roving by Clover

Natural Wool Roving is available in a dozen colors for Needle Felting, Pom-Pom Makers and other yarn projects.

Wool Felt is available in three color palettes; Brights, Autumn, and Heathers. 

Place base fabric/project on the Needle Felting Mat . Cut Wool Felt applique shapes and place on the right side the project, and pierce lightly with the Needle Felting Tool . The fibers will become interlaced, attaching the motif to the fabric. Repeated piercing produces also produces a fluffy image of the applique on the reverse side of the fabric.

We’ve found this Reusable Snack Pouch Sewing Tutorial by Silvia Sutters over at the BERNINA We All Sew Blog. We’ve modified this project to include two fabrics per pouch; an outer fabric and an inner fabric.

Reusable Fabric Snack Pouch Sewing Supplies List

1/2 yd each two or more assorted Farmer’s Market Fruits & Veggies Fabrics

Clover’s Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge

Four Cones Coordinating Serger Cone Threads

Schmetz ELx 705 Serger Needles Size 80/12

4-Thread Serger Sewing Machine, such as a bernette b64 AIRLOCK Overlocker

Double-Eyed Needle

Optional: Clover’s Wonder Clips

Cut Fabrics for each pouch:

Cut one 7-1/2″ x 15-1/2″ rectangle for outside fabric.Cut one 7-1/2″ x 15-1/2″ rectangle for inner lining fabric.

Set serger for a standard 4-thread overlock seam and insert a new Schmetz ELx 705 Serger Needles Size 80/12 .Place one outer rectangle and one inner rectangle wrong sides together. Stitch short edges along top and bottom of each pouch.

Fold pouch bottom up 6-3/4″. Starting at the bottom, stitch along one side, stopping at pouch center.

Fold pouch top down 2-1/4″ over bottom pouch and continue stitching entire side seam. Repeat steps on remaining pouch side.Use a Double-Eyed Needle to re-thread serger tails into previous stitched seams.
