During a break I happened to strike up a conversation with the first woman who was able to join the cinematographer’s guild. She said that she’d had all the qualifications for years, and had applied long before she got in, but that the man in charge of membership refused to let her join, telling her, “Over my dead body!” “Oh my god,” I asked her, “How did you ever get in?“ “He died.”

Just a reminder that the comics that shops give away on Free Comic Book Day are not free to the stores. They have to pay for the bundles of books, and then they also pay shipping. So it can be very substantial to host FCBD in a store with a large attendance.

Most stores are happy to do it and do an amazing job making it a fun event. Please thank them by doing some shopping there ON Free Comic Book Day. Maybe by that trade paperback or statue or action figure you have been thinking about, or have the employees suggest some new books. If you do it on FCBD, the message that this is a good, worthwhile expenditure of time, money and resources will be heard and everyone benefits!

Not only are we excited to have gailsimone​ signing with us at Fantastic Comics for FCBD, we are THRILLED that she will also be joining us for our Fantastic Ladies Comics Club meeting the next day!

For Sunday, May 3rd we will be reading: RED SONJA: Queen of Plagues, vol. 1 by Gail Simone and Walter Geovani

Red Sonja, the Hyrkanian She-Devil with a sword, must pay back a blood debt…even if it means leading a doomed army to their certain deaths. An epic tale of blood, lust, and vengeance, Queen of Plagues takes Red Sonja from the depths of her own grave to the heights of battlefield glory.

Gail Simone will be at Fantastic Comics the day before doing a signing for our Free Comic Book Day Event, and she will be attending this meeting with us for an in-person Q&A! We’re all very excited to have her here. We will be starting the meeting a half hour earlier than our usual time, starting at 7PM and ending at 8:30.

This meeting is open to women attendees only, including LGBT+ and nonbinary identified adults. We are wheelchair accessible and happy to welcome new readers as well as life-long comic book fans.
