Hype! The very first #Valkyries variant, for Gail Simone’s Swords of Sorrow with a cover by Valkyries founder @kateleth ! #comics #lcsvalkyries

So so cool!

Dang, I want those!

I do have to say, though, that Kelly Sue and the Valks worked out a variant for Pretty Deadly first, before us, and it was only a scheduling thing that had ours come out. Full credit where it is due! But man, such a perfect cover!

If you were approached to write a famous character you've never written before, what kinds of things would you do to prepare?

Well, this isn’t hypothetical, I am in this position all the time.

What I generally do is try to read two things; 1) their first story, and 2) their key stories.

I need to know where they came from, what the creator had in mind. Then I try to find out what stories people best remember that character for. They are not necessarily the BEST stories, they may just be the most pertinent to the readers’ memories of them. And I try finally to read their latest appearances.

From there, I generally try to contact their creator or the writers most closely linked with them, to get their advice and okay. If they clear me, I proceed. I have turned down a couple jobs because the creator was uncomfortable with the situation with their publisher, for example (Black Lightning and Blade). It’s like crossing a picket line, I prefer not to do it.

Then I spend a lot of time finding what I can love about the character. If I can’t find that, I turn the book down. The character, readers, and creators who worked on that character deserve that, I think.

Hey Gail! How do you feel about the upcoming roster for Mark Waid's All-New, All-Different Avengers? I'm loving the inclusion of Thor, Ms. Marvel, Miles Morales and Sam Alexander! Plus Sam Wilson is still Cap! YAY!

Mark Waid is one of the most dependably on-point writers in comics, he never lets me down. I read the FCBD preview and was a little lost, but definitely intrigued, so I will be reading TWO Avengers books for the first time in years.

I just read the second trade of Red Sonja last night in one sitting. Just wanted to let you know I loved it!!

When people ask which of my books to try, my hubby always recommends that book, he says it’s his favorite thing of mine all year.

I confess, I have a real fondness for those characters in that volume. Glad you liked it!

Hey, I love Harvester from Birds, it's such a shame she's never been used again! Any chance for more on her back-story and powers?

Harvest was my attempt to bring some urban legends to the dcu. She has some hardcore fans, but I believe she only appeared the one time, and not yet at all in the new 52. It’s worth some thought!

Saw the anon Arrow ask: yeah there's a part of the comic fandom who watches arrow that like to manipulate the Green Arrow and Black Canary into a destined lovers/meant-to-be/forever and always type thing like Lois and Clark or Barry and Iris simply because

I am not watching Arrow (no reason except I don’t watch much tv) and I haven’t read any books with Arrow or Canary in them for a long time, so this all is like discussing astrophysics to me.

I am okay with them being together in theory if it’s done well, but I rarely thought it was done well.
