Just read Sword of Sorrow#1, and I have to ask - WHAT IN THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING?! I've been through the book FOUR TIMES now and I STILL can't find any ARROW in it!! (seriously though, if you ever stop writing Sonja, I'm out. 30 years, and it's NEVER be
Arrow is a major influence on everything I do, even the stuff that came before Arrow was a show.
Arrow.
I am so glad you love Sonja and Swords of Arrow!
SHANGHAI READERS YOU ARE IN MY HEART.
SHANGHAI READERS YOU ARE IN MY HEART.
Hi Gail. Not Arrow related, but would you consider Seaside a good spot for an anniversary? I know nothing of the area. We'd be coming from Seattle. Thanks!
I have not spent a lot of time there, but it’s beautiful, there are some good restaurants that overlook the beach, there are fun shops and bike rentals and lots of gorgeous views. It’s been a while since I went there, it’s a good distance up the coast from us, but you will have a lovely time, I suspect. :)

Okay. So, Shanghai.
I am a little emotional still.
I can’t tell you how happy this trip has made me. The first day of the con, all fhe comics people started a little slowly, so we weren’t sure if we were going to be busy.
Then we were simply swamped, It was a lot of people for…
I obviously don’t know enough about China to comment on what it’s like elsewhere, but I have been getting emails and messages from people from all over China for years. You are definitely not alone.
This con was amazing, and was way, way more girls than guys. And they were VERY into comics and superheroes and video games. They asked amazingly deep and knowledgeable questions, they talked about their favorite characters, they wore obscure character t-shirts and accessories, they cosplayed gorgeously, I can’t describe it. It was simply beautiful and I cried several times.
You are not alone, people who love the stuff you love are out there. Shanghai might be a long way from you but there are people who can talk to you via Tumblr and elsewhere. I truly believe the success of this con is going to lead to LOTS more and I hope you end up having more friends than you can handle!
:)

Okay. So, Shanghai.
I am a little emotional still.
I can’t tell you how happy this trip has made me. The first day of the con, all fhe comics people started a little slowly, so we weren’t sure if we were going to be busy.
Then we were simply swamped, It was a lot of people for me, but because all I do is sign and take photos and such, the lines moved quickly. For the artists, like David Finch and Adi Granov, who do sketches, holy moley, they just were pummeled and the lines moved very slowly.
This is the first such Comic Con in Shanghai, and it made me so, so happy. To see these amazing young people loving comics, talking about comics, cosplaying obscure DC and Marvel characters, it was FANTASTIC.
We had no idea what to expect. No one knew for sure, not even the organizers. But the readers here love Lumberjanes and Hawkeye and Birds of Prey and Secret Six and it is just unbelievably wonderful.
Access to comics is not easy here, or in most of mainland China, I am told. But they are getting comics digitally, or in tps. I can’t even begin to express how kind and gracious the readers here have been. And from what I could tell, it was AT LEAST half females for the guy artists and for me it was probably more like 65% or more. Several times I looked up and saw a long line and it would be ALL females, and they knew their comics, let me tell you.
Another rewarding thing was seeing the talent at the artists’ alley booths. I got to meet some of them, and holy crap, can they draw. I would not be at all surprised if Shanghai ends up as another hot talent pool for DC and Marvel.
I did a panel at the end of the day, and again, did not know what to expect. The people putting on the panel warned me that the Chinese audience was often shy and that they may not feel comfortable asking questions, so I was prepared for that.
What I was NOT prepared for was the incredible insightful nature of the questions. People were asking HARD and complex questions about important story points, things like theme and subtext and tone and WOW, the questions were so good, I feel like I didn’t begin to answer them as well as they deserved. There is something SO gratifying about someone asking questions that deep when there is a language barrier, it’s brings you together, it shows that understanding is more significant than shared surface detail. I left that panel wanting to hug every single person attending.
There was a group of Deadpools attending, we decided that that would be called a GIGGLE of Deadpools. Lady Deadpool asked some of the best questions and it was hard to respond because she was so freaking adorable.
I really want to thank everyone for making us feel so welcome. China is one of our favorite countries to visit, but last time we were here, people couldn’t watch the Simspons, video game consoles were banned, a lot of pop culture stuff we take for granted was not available. Now this stuff is here and the kids are responding to it with the same affection and creativity we see at the very best cons anywhere in the world.
I am breathless with delight. The con is half over, but I can’t wait to see what today brings. It feels like what we are doing, telling these stories, is bringing people together all over the world and I am so happy to be a small teensy part of that.
The smiles on the faces of these con-goers are going to stick with me forever. What an amazing experience.
This is the first such con, but the genie is out of that bottle and there are going to be a lot more.
What a revelation, what a beautiful thing to witness.
Thank you again, everyone who came, I absolutely adore you!
Gail Simone Provides A Writer's Commentary For Swords Of Sorrow #1
Writer Commentary by Gail Simone: I have never done a writer’s commentary before, but I’ve always enjoyed the little behind-the-scenes sneak peek when others have done it, so this is my attempt. I still want to keep some mystery and surprises, so mostly I am going to comment on oddball things that are completely irrelevant,… Read more »

YOUNG UNARMED BLACK MAN SHOT AND PARALYZED IN HIS NEIGHBORHOOD BY FAKE COP FOR TALKING TO WHITE GIRL IN HIS CAR
On February 4, sitting in his own car in his own neighborhood, talking to a female passenger, Monroe Bird was shot in the neck by a security guard, Ricky Stone, a 52-year-old white man. The bullet pierced the C3 vertebrae in his neck. Standing 6 feet, 8 inches, Bird, a gifted athlete, is now unable to move his arms or legs and relies on a ventilator to breathe.Heres what you need to know:
The security guard who shot Bird possessed marijuana at the time of the shooting. He told the Tulsa police that he hadn’t smoked it in a few weeks, and they didn’t even give him a citation. This is the definition of white privilege. Mind you, Tulsa was quick to test Eric Harris for drugs after they killed him and then released the results widely—even though he never acted violently toward officers. The security guard went to the tired, age-old excuse and claimed that he saw Bird reach into his glove compartment. According to the police report, no weapons were found in or near the car, and no items that even seemed to belong in the glove compartment were found out or about in the car.The security guard claimed he thought Monroe and his female passenger were having sex in the car and that he only approached them because of this. She’s white. Bird is black. Both denied doing anything of the sort.
The security guard has claimed that Bird, who has no criminal record, attempted to run him over and basically kill him there on the spot.
Both the female passenger and Bird denied the guard’s account and stated that they were driving away when Stone began recklessly firing his gun into the car.
The security guard who shot Bird worked for Benjy D. Smith, who owns Smith & Son Security Company. This important to know because Smith is a reserve deputy for the same Tulsa Sheriff’s Office that is currently under national scrutiny for its unethical practices with Reserve Deputy Bob Bates, who shot and killed Eric Harris earlier this year.
The insurance company is denying him coverage because they claim “it was his own fault that he got shot.”PLEASE HELP HIM!! you can either Donate (doesnt have to be alot it can be as small as $5) or Call the healthcare group and demand they give coverage with the number listed above.
This really hurt my heart.
I just cannot with the world anymore. I avoid the news sometimes cause it is so hurtful. But I also need to be woke.
literally sitting in his fucking car in front of his fucking home.
please tell me how the hell getting a degree and owning a business would have stopped this from happening….
G A il Simone, Green Arrow? Am I supposed to assume this is a coincidence?
You must be silenced.
