ACK!

So, I finally get to release this news!

Today I am doing the long drive down tohttps://www.facebook.com/FantasticComics
for Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, and for their lady comics readers club Sunday. It’s going to be a blast!
And I am extra excited that they will have exclusive prints (limited editions!) of the amazing KATE LETH Valkyrie variant cover to SWORDS OF SORROW #1!

Come early and get one, says me! This is something we were not sure we could get designed, printed, and delivered on time, so I am INCREDIBLY excited that the store will have them on Free Comic Book Day and if you think I am not snagging one for myself, you are VERY MISTAKEN.

Berkeley California!

Red Sonja Sale!

Wow! Comixology is having a massive Red Sonja sale. Almost all of my issues, including Conan/Red Sonja, for just 99 cents each. LOTS of great writers, like Mike Carey, Mike Oeming, Nancy Collins, and lots more. This is a steal, I am buying a BUNCH.

A step in the right direction.

A step in the right direction.:

Last night I went to a “lecture” given by Kathleen Hanna. It was a wildly entertaining and eye opening experience listening to her first hand tales of founding the Riot Grrrl movement and all of the positive and negative that came along with it. I had a genuinely great time with the lecture, as…

This has been a weird few weeks for comics, in some ways.

I am very optimistic for the future and I like to believe that in some cases, it’s more a misunderstanding than outright misogyny or anything like that. I think things are getting better, it’s a big table, there’s room for all.

This post makes me very optimistic. Thank you!

Comic Bento

Okay, so this is important, in the interest of absolute transparency, this was sent to me without charge from comicbento.com. If people believe that damages my credibility, I totally understand. More about that in a bit, but I am being completely straightforward in my opinion, here.

Okay, I have been hearing about Loot Crate and some other ‘mystery’ box subscriptions recently, and I have to admit I have been intrigued. I like weird little geeky things, but it has gotten to the point where if I go to a convention, I am very, very unlikely to actually be able to SEE the convention outside of my signing table and the panel rooms, let alone shop. So I watched some unboxing videos, thought they were cool, and got signed up. Got my first box last week and loved it–at the con in Chicago, I saw other Loot Craters wearing or carrying their LC stuff and it was a lot of fun, I really enjoyed that first shipment.

So I decided to try some others. I mentioned on Twitter that I was thinking about signing up for a couple other mystery subscriptions, and asked people which ones they recommended. Several people suggested Comic Bento, but I was a bit hesitant, because I get sent so, so many comics and I don’t have time to read them all, or space to store them.

But the guys at Comic Bento wrote and said they would be delighted to send one. They did not ask for promotional consideration in return, they just wanted to send me a box to see if I would like it.

I’ll be honest. I would NOT have subscribed, probably, just by looking at the website. It’s a very nice product, but I am in a relatively rare position that I am given hundreds (literally) of comics every single month, and adding more, at random, did not sound that appealing.

Anyway, it was a nice offer, I said I would be happy to provide a look. And just so people know, that same day, I did sign up for some other mystery boxes at full price, so it’s genuinely something I’m interested in.

The subscription is 17.50 a month, and they promise between four and seven books, each centered around a theme.

Again, I had mixed feelings. And I got my first box today.

To be blunt, I am very, VERY impressed. They absolutely nailed the selection, they are all books that I really want to read. Three of them are books I had never heard of, but really find interesting.

Each of the books nears or exceeds the subscription price. So it’s a very good deal, monetarily.

But I honestly thought, okay, they made this box just for me. They must have known what I like, from Twitter or Tumblr, because each of these books made me go WOW upon opening the box. But no, it turns out this was the latest shipment everybody got. And if the boxes are all anywhere close to this good, I am absolutely in.

I stress again, I get a TON of books at cons and in the mail. I rarely talk about them because I rarely get a chance to read them all. But these I really want to read.

So the theme was, MIX TAPE. It came with a little card explaining that these were anthology books, all with multiple superstar creators. I freaking LOVE short story comics, so this was right up my alley.

The first book was FOUR LETTER WORDS, a little b&w book with short stories about Love, Hate, Fear and Fate, by big name creators like Matt Fraction, Robert Kirkman, and Jim Mahfood. The first couple stories were excellent. This is like an indi book, but done mostly by a-list mainstream writers, it looks like. Score.

Second book is THE DARK HORSE BOOK OF MONSTERS, and this is where I was convinced they cheated the box and just sent stuff I would like (they didn’t!). This book is a gorgeous color hardback, short monster stories by some of my favorite creators, people like Kurt Busiek, Mike Mignola, Evan Dorkin, Jill Thompson and lots more. Double score, I would have paid for the box just for this if I had known it existed.

Next is a very interesting one, AFTERWORKS. This is a book featuring not comics people, but animation creators, from big ticket animated films, doing comics in their spare time. People who worked on The Incredibles, Ice Age, Futurama, Toy Story and more. Again, great concept, how did I not know this book existed? Score again!

And finally, MEGA CITY MASTERS, a huge Judge Dredd book featuring some of the all-time best Dredd stories by some of the best Dredd creators ever. Great stories and art on the glossy paper they deserve. This is a pure guilty pleasure, I love Dredd and it can be intimidating knowing where to start with his story. Another big SCORE.

Okay. So that’s my first box. Again, I have no idea if the average box will maintain this kind of perfect selection for me, I just don’t know. But man, did they hit the nail on the head. I would absolutely recommend Comic Bento. It seems like the people behind this really care and selected the books with taste and an eye towards memorable work.

Again, I did not pay for this box, so keep that in mind. But I get free books constantly, so I think I am being objective when I say 17.50 for this selection of books is a ridiculously good bargain. My feeling is that most of these books will be loaned out to friends who like these genres when I have read them myself.

So, great job, Comic Bento. Sincerely, this was a really fun thing to get in the mail and I am subscribing.

Tech stuff…the books come in a very attractive and sturdy box, that I am keeping for carrying my own books. The books are wrapped in a sealed bag, and arrived in perfect shape.

I am glad this service exists, odds are I wouldn’t have any of these books if left to my own devices, and I am pretty delighted.

Check it out, if you are interested. It’s a little gift you can give yourself or someone you love. comicbento.com
