I thought I would show some of Jan Duursema’s exquisite pencils from the CONVERGENCE: NIGHWING/ORACLE book, so you can see why I was so happy she was chosen to be the artist. LOVED her work for ages, and she really came through.

First is a character study of Nightwing in a newer version of his cosume, a little more battle-ready. And then the first appearance of Nightwing in the issue.

LOVELY work. Most pencils I get are not quite this tight, so it’s fun to see how they differ from inked pages.

I'm 39 and I teared up when I watched the new Star Wars trailer today. Perfectly normal, right?

I am purposely not watching it and it’s almost impossible to avoid people talking about it and showing images!

Redheads

So, I was in the hospital a few years ago for a very routine surgery thing, nothing serious at all.

And I nearly died on the table. They cut a blood vessel that wasn’t supposed to be there, and I nearly bled to death despite being in a hospital with an excellent surgeon right there.

It was touch and go. A fifteen minute surgery lasted four hours. My husband was freaking out in the waiting area. I had no idea, of course.

When I woke up, feeling very weak and like I had been hit with several cannonballs, the doctor explained what had happened (I will spare you the details, but it was very close…I haven’t really talked about it in public). And he explained that they were very sorry, but this was some sort of extra vessel that shouldn’t belong there, and it was nicked.

One of the last things he said was, “It’s probably because you’re a redhead.”

At first I thought he was kidding. But no, it turns out it’s true. Redheads are weird as hell physically. They are more sensitive to pain, anaesthesia is less effective on them, they can be more prone to skin disorders, they are “over-represented” in math and science, and “under-represented” in sports.

And beyond that, it is not uncommon for us to have weird physical traits. Like a blood vessel where it’s not supposed to be.

So that explains it.

We’re mutants.

I know you probably can't say, but I heard you had tried getting Starling in Secret Six and was told no. Could that be because there are plans for her elsewhere? She's my absolute favorite character and I was DEVASTATED when she just up and disappeared. Sh

Okay, here’s the thing.

I have said this many times but shared universes are like  a big round table with a pile of crayons in the middle. Around the table are the creative teams, and they all have a coloring book. We all reach for the colors we want, but sometimes, another writer got that particular crayon first. Or sometimes, someone is doing a picture where they WILL need that crayon and they call dibs.

It’s not bad, it’s not evil, it’s sort of necessary. We need to prioritize appearances at times, otherwise, it would be very chaotic to write and to read.

So, it is very common that a character won’t be available, and it’s because Geoff Johns wants to use them for something huge, or Scott Snyder is going to give them a big debut in Batman. These are GOOD things. I am happy when a character I like is unavailable because they are getting a big launch somewhere.

So it’s possible, but there is no way to know.

My understanding in the case of Secret Six is that they felt Black Alice had more fans than Starling, and that she provided a greater contrast to the rest of the team.
