"If you want to be of a certain sexual orientation, and it does not harm anybody, you are entitled to..."
If you want to be of a certain sexual orientation, and it does not harm anybody, you are entitled to your individual choice, and it you want to celebrate it in a low-profile event, I don't see why not.
But it becomes a sensitive issue when it becomes a large-scale festival running for days, because it would provoke many people.
The voices of the minority should be respected, but the views of the majority need to be respected too.
"-
Chua Soi Lek, MCA President, psychiatrist, and former Malaysian Minister of Health; a reaction to the banning of Seksualiti Merdeka (Independent Sexuality).
Did you choose to be Chinese-Malaysian, Datuk Seri? To be male? To have two thumbs? To be straight? The GLBT* community didn't have that choice either. Like you, they simply are who they are. And when the majority is out to harm and oppress the minority, we have a problem.
(via maybethings)
Well earn yo goddamn respect, majority, because you sure as fuck don't deserve it right now, silencing the minority like that.
Shit, nobody gives a fuck when Chinese companies take two weeks off for CNY.

God dammit. "A sensitive issue."
What bullshit.
HA! Twitter
I just threw out the idea of Scandal Savage appearing in Demon Knights, and Paul Cornell was listening.
How cool would THAT be?
"Finish the sentence: "There have been 16 feature films with Superman or Batman but zero Wonder Woman..."

The LA Times Hero Complex reported tweeted this. The main reason is….? Good fucking question. (via georgethecat)
Wonder Woman's costume is utterly impossible to portray in live action?
In the eyes of studio execs, Wonder Woman lends herself better to TV series? (See: the '75-'79 series, and the recent [not picked up] pilot.)
Execs get cold feet whenever her origin is mentioned? (though that might change with Thor being successful)
It's not like it's never been attempted. Every attempt, however, ends up in development hell for one reason or another.

1. It is not the Goddamn costume. Seriously. NO. Just stop. IT IS NOT THE COSTUME. A) Costumes can be changed, re-tweaked, re-imagined, B) She has had a new costume in comics, C) Her costume is no less colourful than Superman's, D) Her costume is not that different from what actual athletes wear.
2. How do we know she *lends* herself better to a TV series? A good story can absolutely be told in a 2 hour timeframe, if written well.
3. Her origin really isn't that mind-boggling for ordinary people to wrap their heads around. Mom wanted a baby. Couldn't have a baby. Made a miracle baby out of clay. Baby grows up and fights in a contest to win the right to fight for her people and be the representative in Man's World. Look how easy that was! Just as easy as Alien with special ring dies. Man finds alien with special ring. Man learns how to use special ring. Man overcomes fear.
4. The latest attempt was basically not picked up because it was shitty writing. That pilot was honestly dreadful and it's because whoever wrote the screenplay needed to look at the quality of the product being brought to the table and re-write the hell out of it.
5. I just want to repeat: IT'S NOT THE COSTUME.

I have spoken with several development teams on various Wonder Woman film attempts. What I am left with is a sense, that no one will state outright, that Hollywood is afraid of the idea of a female superhero movie. They don't think men will go see it. And I think they think Wonder Woman herself is more particularly aimed at women. I think they are mistaken, but that's definitely the impression I got.
You can't blame the individual teams, lots of them have tried. Good, solid producers, writers, and directors. It just has to get past executives who don't know what comics are about. Even with Green Lantern, they could be told what a huge success the book is, leading to spin-offs and such. That is harder to point to with Wonder Woman.
Plus, I have to say, I read a couple of the scripts in development and they were not strong. I hate to say it, but I'm glad those scripts weren't filmed.

Just posting more of the lovely Jeanette.
And the outside possibility that I could get Gail Simone's attention again.
(Pssst, come write Cosmic Marvel when you get bored with DC winkwink)
Aren't Abnett and Lanning writing that stuff? Those guys are way, way better at that than I would ever be, I'm sure. I love those guys.
I want people to look at this panel for a minute, and you'll understand why I am so crazy about Nicola Scott. Look at that face—it has whimsy and playfulness, it looks beautiful but unique, and the horror of a scar that she's been carrying all along is subtle yet unsettling. Knowing the scar comes from her having been beheaded makes it disturbing. The fact that it's in the middle of her trying to seduce Deadshot makes it even odder, and Nicola just nails it. She amazes me. No one draws Jeannette like Nicola Scott.
Another thing here is the work of the colorist, Jason Wright. A lot of colorists over-render, but if you'll notice, Jason here employs almost a painterly technique, bringing light across the panel, and again subtly underplaying the scar, which could easily have been overdone. Magnificent.
The amazing thing to me is, this isn't a full page spread or even a half-page, it's just one panel on a multi-panel page. She did this kind of care with almost every panel. And Jason, one of the best colorists I've ever worked with, was a stone-cold genius—that guy was one of the best in the business.
Sigh, I adore this panel - this entire storyline, really, and particularly the glimpses at Jeannette's backstory we get in it, and the ART. It gets me every time.
I have to say, this is one of my favourite lines in the book, oddly enough. It stuck with me because it is so evocative. "Widow's netting" has two totally different meanings, neither of which is literally applicable here, and yet the use of it by Jeannette to describe her scar is immediately apparent and understandable. I love what the simultaneous exposure of the scar and yet apparent glib dismissal of it says about Jeannette and her relationship to/entrapment by her beheading/s.
Also, I could stare at this panel for a very long time.
>reading secret six
>reach this panel
>google widow's net meaning
>have this post pop up
oh okay that works cool
BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN
LOL! \o/
Widow's netting has two meanings: one is the netting surrounding the bowsprit at the front of ships (I have no idea what type of ships, it's morning and I haven't had coffee yet). I don't know where this came from.
The other refers to the veils, usually black, that widows would wear to their husband's funeral and often afterwards, which eventually went (mostly) out of fashion and/or became a fashion choice rather than a mark of mourning. This is obviously the one I read as Jeannette referring to. I think it's interesting because it's got that ironic undercurrent of characterizing the scar - something she obviously hates and takes ains to hide - as decorative, as well as emphasizing the fact that while real widow's nets were temporary and by choice, this is something she's clearly stuck with and something that shows how permanently she's affected by that husband's death/her beheading(s)/her commitment to love/her awesomeness as a character. :P
Apologies if that doesn't make sense. I should go have breakfast now.

On the contrary, I think you are the first person to accurately define the source of that quote!

APE IN A CAPE: A Question Of Character
My question is this…
…is there a comic book character who, for any reason or no good reason, you just plain don't like? One that others like perfectly fine, but whose appeal escapes you entirely?
No judgments, just wondering. Every time I say I'm not a huge fan of a certain character, as a…
Hal Jordan and Barry Allen.
Everything I have read with either of them, I have walked away thinking they are bland at best and insufferable, annoying douchebags at worst. I hate ~reckless heroes~ with a passion when the entire universe seems weighed in their favour so that they never have to face any consequences for their actions until some necessary moment where some chick or something gets killed off to ~teach them a lesson~, which they inevitably don't really learn. And Barry? I still have no idea what his personality actually is, but the fact that the nDCU is basically his fault renders him irredeemable in my books. Nothing could possibly make me like him after seeing how selfish he is.
That doesn't even touch on how emblematic both are of the generic Silver Age Hero, and how both were unnecessarily brought back, replacing much more interesting characters in the process, all for the sake of nostalgia. Blech.
But whenever I express this dislike of these characters outside of the Tumblr crowd, their fans seem to get all surprised, but when I ask them what is unique or quirky or special about either of them, I can never get a straight answer.
Seriously, can SOMEONE out there explain to me why Hal Jordan is the greatest Green Lantern of all time? The ongoing narrative in the DCU and the way fans and creators talk about him always suggested to me that he's supposed to be, but I haven't read a single thing to support that.
*********************************
I will probably be drummed out of comics, but I agree. I don't dislike Hal or Barry, but I absolutely adore Wally and Guy and John and Kyle.
Hal and Barry were from a blander time.
Photo Help?
I saw a photo of the amazing Scandal and Bane cosplayers in a very Secret Six pose (Scandal is cuddling Bane who embraces her paternally) that was wonderful and perfect. I meant to reblog it, but for the life of me, I can't find the photo now. I know it was here on Tumblr just yesterday. Help?
