A Question Of Character

My question is this…

…is there a comic book character who, for any reason or no good reason, you just plain don't like? One that others like perfectly fine, but whose appeal escapes you entirely?

No judgments, just wondering. Every time I say I'm not a huge fan of a certain character, as a reader, someone who loves that character freaks out about it. But we're like all readers, writers are…we loved some characters on sight and others took a while to warm up to. I was not a Martian Manhunter fan until I actually got to write him and saw how fun he was. It happens to all of us.

Just curious…who is it that you just plain have an aversion to?

The Authori-Teens!

Aw, yeah, the Authori-Teens!

I'm trying to remember their names…was it Kid Apollo, Daybreaker, Nestling, the Contractor…dang, I can't recall the names of the Doctor and Jack Hawksmoor characters. Hmm. Jake Hatfield, maybe, the Spirit of Small Towns?  Was the Doctor kid called the Intern?

My brain is foggy.

I loved these guys. They were meant to be a mix of terrible sixties teen teams with a huge dose of 90's style fascist populist superheroics. I created them for the Gen13 book, but I had some doubts about whether or not Warren Ellis would be okay with it—they'd done a lot of screwing with his AUTHORITY book and I didn't want to make that worse.

So I wrote him and explained the idea and that it was meant to be an affectionate parody/tribute. He got it immediately and was great about it, typically gracious Warren, who is an incredibly nice guy despite the intentional image he shows on the internet.

Strangely, people LOVED them. When one of them died in the story, we got a really outraged response.  They were just supposed to be a one-shot thing, but people really took to them.

A couple years back, we decided to do a mini-series featuring them, that would be a combination teen team book/brutal parody of current comics. Warren again was cool with it. Unfortunately, I got too busy with other things and it didn't happen. Now, with the new 52, I'm not sure they make sense any more, which is a shame!

I think that Barbara will be always Barbara. I admire her spirit, and no matter if she´s wearing the costume or fighting crime on the chair..she´s someone who ´ll overcome all the challenges. She´s special

She is, and this is beautiful. Wow!

Gorgeous job!

Just some quick shots of me [RagDoll], Dave [Bane], and Maddy [Black Alice] at the just-gone-by MCM Expo. He was certainly a fun character to do, and getting Gail Simone to sign one of Rag's wrist slits was just too perfect.

Joy! Also, Black Alicelooked fantastic!

I miss you already Secret Six

These people were the best. They looked so much like my vision for these characters that I kept doing a double-take…they spoke and acted like the real thing, it was absolutely lovely. I saw Bane getting coffee or tea and asked to take his picture and he immediately got down on one knee and started bowing to me. It was surreal and adorable.

Ragdoll muttered PERFECT Ragdollisms and was a real contortionist, Knockout was very intimidating and awesome, lady Blackhawk was adorable (she's not pictured here). Bane was amazing, arms like tree trunks.

Scandal was fierce and gorgeous. She had a funny story…she got the costume from another cosplayer who played Scandal, and whose girlfriend dressed as Knockout. Apparently, the other Scandal and her girlfriend broke up so she didn't want to wear the costume anymore. That's sad, but the meta textual connotations sort of blow my mind.

Just a masterpiece of cosplay from the whole group!

CBR has the preview of Batgirl #3 which you all can click and take a look at. But one sharp eyed reader pointed out that the graffiti on the Gotham trains was interesting.

Heh. That was me, I asked for that to be put in, it's in the script which was written well before Red Hood #1 came out.
