Certain Shades of Limelight: There should be a gag order on DC writers commenting at Comic Book Resources

Certain Shades of Limelight: There should be a gag order on DC writers commenting at Comic Book Resources:

therearecertainshadesoflimelight:

While I'm thinking of it…I know I've seen this discussed before on Tumblr and I'm adding my voice to the request.

I honestly think that DC Comics should put a gag order on writers and creators commenting with fans over at Comic Book Resources.

I know that certain writers like Gail Simone have…

I appreciate the comment, but I had my own board and STILL got treated like shit there routinely.  I love Jonah, and I was at CBR for a long time, but the prevailing attitude there is that fights and trolling are all great fun and boost hit counts. Unless it's towards one of the long-term mods, then they freak out and get all ban-happy.

It makes me sad, I've talked to them about it for a long time. There are still a lot of good people there. But I do find Bendis' boards a lot more civil and I've really outgrown the desire to see people insult each other endlessly over differences in taste.

Every single member of the Secret Six (Gail Simone's version, anyway). All eighteen of them.

And yes, I know I have included Liana who technically probably shouldn't really be in there as I don't think she was a proper member of the team, but I couldn't have Scandal and Knockout and not Liana.

And also yes, I know you could argue that Lex Luthor/Mockingbird should also be included but in the Villains United mini when Catman asks Scandal how many are in the group she says six, including Catman which would imply she doesn't count Mockingbird so I didn't either.

What was especially pleasing about drawing this was the realisation that there exactly nine men and nine women. The team itself wasn't always a 50/50 gender split but the fact that over the run it was is very cool.

By the way, if anyone would like to buy this let me know. Any sensible offers more than welcome (the original is pen and ink on A3 Bristol Board).

WOW.  I don't even know what to say to this…I immediately printed it out to have by my desk. I think my favorite is Giganta, so amazing!

Daresay I enjoyed Batgirl more than Batwoman and Huntress combined this week?

what is this i don't even—

*********

I promise I won't tell. I don't have the new issues of those books yet, but I just reread the first two issues of Batwoman and holy $#%& the art is ridiculous….

For whatever reason, The Huntress just really clicked with me.  I don't know if it's the stunning art or that there is just something about Helena….but I am totally on the Huntress bandwagon right now.  I really hope people buy Helena's book.  She is amazing!

Thrilled to see Batwoman getting great press in Rolling Stone.  I hope that ten years from now it won't be a novelty to have a lesbian superhero headlining a book.  I hope that eventually that will just be something that every child will come to know and recognize in their comics and that it's a mainstay in the genre that our heroes are diverse in every way.

And yes….more female driven books.

But let's not forget that we need that Lois Lane driven Daily Planet book that people have been begging for for years.  We've been teased with it now several times over by Greg Rucka and even Geoff Johns who made a statement a few years ago that he wanted to write a Lois book.

The one silver lining that I think a lot of fans who were sad about the Superman books were hoping would come out of this relaunch was a Lois driven book for the Superman franchise.   Sadly, that hasn't happened and the new Action Comics has sidelined Lois's role in the Superman mythos more than any other Superman origin story to date.  Very dissapointing for a franchise that was one of the few male driven narratives to have such a strong female presence for the last 70 years.   Very sad that a whole new generation of young readers are going to read a narrative where one of the most famous women in the genre is being treated just like any other supporting character and marginalized/returned to a sexist stereotype.   I know people like to worship Grant Morrison.  And I understand that people like his vision.  I respect that and I respect what he is doing.  But he's failing big time with Lois and that's a problem.  Actually, I'll go farther and say that he's actually marginalizing her.  That is a real problem that DC should care about and should address.   I'll be honest that it's hard for me to cheer all the female driven books when one of your most famous female characters is being treated like shit.   This is a problem that can be corrected.  It's not too late.   But right now it's a legitimate concern and it's one that is being brushed under the rug because so many of the other female led books are selling so well.   In the meantime, DC's oldest female character is slowly being reduced.  It's sad.

I want more female driven books.  But I also want diversity within my books.  I don't want every female driven book to be spun out of the Batman franchise and I don't want every female hero to be wearing a mask or using superpowers.  I want to see heroism in other ways as well.

I want a Lois book.   I'm waiting on it.  I'm counting on DC to come through at some point with this book and to show me that they understand that their oldest female character—-one who is beloved by millions of people—deserves better than this.

In the meantime, yes yes yes….three cheers for so many wonderful female driven books selling so well and doing well.   Three cheers for writers like Gail who continue to fight the fight.   Baby steps.

But yeah..I want my Lois book.  (And seriously…I hope people buy the Huntress and Batwoman and Batgirl.  These are important books, people.  Support them.)

Really well said, that's the point I was trying to make but didn't.  It's lovely to see three non-t&a female books in the top fifteen. But it's really only scratching the surface of a still hugely white, cis-gendered, straight, male pile. There's a lot to still do.

It's a little victory for sure, I'm happy about it. But it's one step on a longer path.

Really? I Mean, Are You Serious?

The choice today at DC Women Kicking Ass for the finalists are

BATWOMAN and CASSANDRA CAIN?

Way to rip out my heart. How does one choose?

Holy crap, it's impossible.

And why does this choice concern me more than local elections?

Huntress, I have only read the first issue so far but felt it showed great promise.

I can't really explain how happy it makes me to have these kinds of quality books with female leads. Now if we can get some Cass and Renee and Scandal books…!

Working Today On A Story

…with the great Scott Snyder.

I kid you not, this is one of the coolest bat-stories ever. Scott is a genius.

This year is going to rock the bat-books. We've only just started.

HAPPY.

Wow

It's fun to see so many people posting Cass Cain images all at once like this. Very glad she's not forgotten. Believe me, it helps make the case to bring her back.

Is it just me, or is she the best character creation in decades?

A Little Bit Of Joy

I can't tell you how DELIGHTFUL it is to have three female-lead titles in the top fifteen estimated sales this month for the comics industry (in the states, anyway).  And I love that the three books are not about t & a, but are about powerful females with distinct personalities. This is something that was hardly even imaginable when I started a few years back.

On top of that, all three had huge re-orders of their first issues in this same month.

It's beautiful.  It's not perfect, there's a long way to go to true diversity. But it does still feel like the start of some positive movement. But it's funny how one nice step makes you greedy for lots more, LOTS more steps.
