10 Things I’ve Done That You (Probably) Haven’t

John Scalzi post this link to “10 Additional Things I Have Done That you (Probably) Haven’t” and I thought “Hey, I can do that challenge!”

So without further ado, here is my list:

1– Competed in an organized, sanctioned water ski race.

2– Water skied at over 90 mph.

3– Had a GF crash my brand new Mustang.

4– Been forced to drop trousers and underwear in a room full of people at a SF con so a medic could check to see if I had a hernia (I didn’t).

5– Gave up 21 earned runs in 2/3 of an inning (it was...

This Counts

Shhh… don’t tell anyone right now, but I’m supposed to be writing. I was informed that updating the website doesn’t constitute writing. I call bunk.

The temperature’s been dropping here the last few days, with last night actually freezing (I know it was, because I had to walk Sophie in it while she did her business). The cats are loving it, because it means that their little internal furnaces are needed and I won’t kick them off the bed when I’m sleeping. I mean, my bedroomisthe coldest room i...

New Week

Okay, so draft V.1.5 of my collaborative effort with Eric Brown was sent back to him last night. I added some stuff, changed a character name, and basically padded the word count a little. Still a short novel, but now it’s climbing into that “full length” range that we had intended it to be. Still has room for more additions, but overall I’m fairly pleased with the effort.

I also reviewed David Weber and Jane Lindskold’s latest Stephanie Harrington YA novel,Treecat Wars, over at SBR this morni...

Kickstarters? Yeah.

Fall is in the air! How do I know? Because it was freezing this morning when I took Sophie out on our walk.

One of the nicest things about living on a farm is the quiet. You never really appreciate how noisy the city is until you live far enough out of it. And by “appreciate” I mean “Thankful you no longer have to live in an area where your neighbor can look inside your bathroom window from his bathroom window”.

However, the downside of living on a farm is when a cow loses her calf in the middl...

Just A Quick October Update

So I, uh, got a dog this weekend.

Don’t look at me like that! Nobody said a writer couldn’t own catsanddogs!

Anyway, her name is Sophie and I got her from the Roanoke Valley SPCA. She’s a hound/German Shepard mix and a gorgeous red color. 3 1/2 years old, housebroken, trained, big, lazy, friendly dog who likes walks.

Tonight at midnight, my interview with Kal Spriggs is going live over atShiny Book Review. He’s a really neat guy and I think people looking for someone new to read will enjoy his w...

The Accidental Lecture

I sent offHomeworld: Rockfallto my coauthor Eric Brown yesterday afternoon. The first draft is done (yeah, I was slacking) and though it “only” took about 5 weeks to write, that was a rough five weeks.

While the book itself isn’t the longest thing I’ve ever written (I’m looking at you, Corruptor) it is, by far, the grimmest. I don’t think I’ve ever dug that deep into the MilSF genre before when writing. Not evenWraithkinwent that dark, and considering whatWraithkinis all about, that’s saying s...

Puffified

So apparently I am very, very allergic to poison ivy.

Last week I was helping out in Mimi’s garden, planting mums and helping dig up some weeds. I knew there was a little poison ivy in the flower bed (I’d planted other mums a week before) but I had thought I got most of them out.

I was wrong.

I got a double dose of poison ivy (Tuesday and Friday) and now I’m… well, splotchy and puffy are two of my favorite terms right now. 160 mg of prednisone hasn’t even touched it, and anytime warm water touch...

Guest Blog

My guest blog over at Barb Caffrey’s site went live today. I had a lot of fun writing it, and espoused some hard-won wisdom (or blatherings… it’s all semantics to me). Have a look.

And Now, The News

I realized that I can’t post a review ofThe Doctor and the Dinosaurs (Mike Resnick) yet due to the simple fact that it won’t be published until December. So, uh, yeah… whoops?

On the plus side, that means I can go ahead and rush my next review, which isDiscountArmageddon(Seanan McGuire). It was a fun, light little read in the urban fantasy genre (I’m reading more of this genre now, which is confusing). I’msupposedto be writing more onRockfall, but I need to read as well (keeps my mind stimulat...

Book Release 2.0

Just found out that another anthology I’m in,Mental Ward: Echoes of the Pastcame out today. My story,Wake, which I may have mentioned a few dozen times, is in it. It’s a story about an aspiring author and his new job at an old sanitarium — and the things that go bump in the night. Is it all real, or all a part of his overactive imagination?

Click here to buy the story and find out.
