Because Dental Care is a Luxury, Some People are Poor, and Toothaches HURT

So if you’ve been around lately, you may have read that due to a Financial Aid issue, I had to pay for my spring semester myself, and I found this out two days before tuition was due.

That wiped me out. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have $500 just lying around. I had to put it on my credit card. My emergencies-only (supposedly) credit card. I thought about just letting the semester go, but in the end I decided to risk not having an emergency cushion, and paid. Eventually I’d recover fina...

I’m Judging You

This quote annoyed me recently. I forget where I saw it, but it ticked me off, and I thought I’d rant a bit about it. Because, hey. I feel like ranting.

“Noticing so many people talking on their phones while walking as if the solitude would kill them.”

Now, do I want to be in the middle of a bunch of people all talking on their phones? No. One, because no one seems to have faith their phone is picking them up, so they always talk loudly. Two, because science has shown it’s much harder to tune o...

Life: A Continuance

Haven’t heard from the financial aid guys yet. I don’t know what’s taking so long. I turned the paperwork in Friday afternoon, and here it’s Monday night already with no word!

Sheesh. Don’t they know I have a life?

In other news, yesterday in a great fit of energy that I should have put into editing but didn’t, I rearranged my bedroom. I like it much better now, which is a relief. Moving things in my room (and the apartment is so tiny that moving them OUT of my room to rearrange isn’t really an...

Bureaucracy Bites

They’re not really out to get me. I do understand that, now. Once I would have felt personally attacked (okay, I still do. Just now I know it’s not reasonable.) Rules exist because people abuse the system. Just like my (work) school has a uniform policy because it’s harder to enforce a looser code (no, really. It IS.) the financial aid system has rules about the percent of classes attempted versus completed to keep people from wasting money-not-theirs on classes they’re dropping.

I get that. T...

Upon Reflection I’m Not Sorry

Join me in a wallow? I promise I’ll bring it around.

Through the amazing generosity of friends, I went away last week. It was the first time in…eighteen years? Something like that. I’ve run away for weekends a few times, but this was a whole week of near-complete freedom.

I didn’t have to worry about travel because friends rented a car and I wasn’t on the list of drivers. I didn’t have to worry about accomodations because they’d rented a timeshare at a lovely resort. I didn’t have to keep tabs...

Checking In

From 2012-12-27 Sedona, AZ

In short, Sedona is amazing. This was the view from the balcony at the lovely resort where we stayed, Sedona Summit.

In long…well, no, I don’t have any energy for a long retelling of my adventures tonight. Click on the date under the picture for a few more pictures. I haven’t uploaded anywhere NEAR all the pics I took. ;)

You Are on Notice

I’m going to Sedona. I’m excited. I’ve never been, and through the kindness of friends, we’re going for a whole week. I don’t really know how it’s going to go. With my adventure friend, we’d spend the week hiking. With other friends perhaps shopping (a frustrating but still interesting experience for us broke folks.) With these friends? I don’t know.

I guess I’ll find out.

Purportedly there will be internet, though the resort (ooh, resort!) website says that “due to the location of Sedona, cell...

Why Squid?

So if you’ve been around a while, you may be wondering…why squid?

If that’s all you’re wondering, you’re doing well. ;)

Because squid are versatile sea creatures. You can smack someone mantle-first and it’s going to hurt, or you can let the squid get his tentacles into things and it’ll hurt more.

Why marine life? Well, back in the early days of the internet (for me, anyway) I was quite amused by the mIRC feature to slap someone around with a trout. I used it on all my friends. Often. On a whim. E...

Hard Work Pays Off!

screen cap of two A grades

W00t! KD is a very happy camper this evening. Add to that it’s almost vacation (and it’s looking like it won’t be insufferable…) and I’ve almost got my desk cleared off at work AND the worldbuilding is somewhat sort of a little bit going my way…

Whee!

STOP TELLING ME IT CAN’T BE HELPED

Internet preachers, stop acting like there can only be one response. Don’t tell me “stop talking about gun control and think about the families!” I can do both, you self-righteous bastard. Hell, I’m good at multi-tasking. I can pray for the families, cry for their loss, talk about gun control, and thank God my baby is safe in her bed ALL WITHIN FIFTEEN MINUTES. And then I’ll cycle through them again.

Gun control MUST be strengthened. How many must we lose before we see this?

Can we wipe out all...
