I Went to a Gym–And I Liked It!

Some time ago, I thought about joining a gym. I looked around at the options, but the only ones close to me had a lot of reviews with variations of “only for the beautiful people” or “expensive!” or “constant pressure to upgrade membership.” Planet Fitness and Chuze sounded good–affordable, supportive, maybe even fun–but there were no locations of either near my work or my home. I resigned myself to just walking around the lake a lot more. Which–I love the lake. But it’s going to be a HUNDRED...

Superfriends, Go For It!

I haven’t done any actual scientific data collecting, but I’m of the understanding that a lot of us mean to do things we never get around to, butthen go ahead and do a lot of things we never meant to do.

Attaining level 37 on Candy Crush instead of working on aterm paper, for instance. Wandering into the kitchen for a snack instead of dealing with a prickly email, maybe.

Reading aboutour galaxy maybe being a wormholeor octopibeing basically aliens instead of writing books, for instance. And d...

Best Laid Plans, and All That

Does anyone else always want to make risqué jokes about the “best laid…?”

Just me, then?

Ahem.

As usual in my life, I’m pretty happy, but I feel I could do better. Also as usual, I’m looking around for ideas.

Recently Erin Zarro (who is awesomesauce) mentioned Monica Leonelleand 8-minute writing. I’m trying it. Currently the numbers are whizzing by on my timer, while March of Cambreadth plays to make sure I feel like kicking some ass.

It’s been…months…since I wrote anything. Every time I fini...

Coming Back

Hello, blog-world! I’m coming back, I swear! I survived my semester, and now I’m knocking through my to-do list† and reacquainting myself with my life.

Making a list of my still-viable writing projects, too, because I’m going to get this writing career thing moving.

Gotta get my ass in gear.

Right now, though, I should probably take my ass to bed.

† Okay, I’m making a to-do list, and knocking it out will come next. But I’m adapting a method I’ve beenusing successfully at work, so this format...

Crowbars and Covers

So I know this awesome writer. I love everything I’ve ever read of her writing, and I’ve managed to get my hands on a lot, mostly in bits and pieces.

But she has this problem.

I haven’t always been as helpful as I’d like. I’ve tried to talk her through it, but I have this habit of, to quote my housemate, telling people to open the box with the crowbar found inside.

I’ve tried to just beat up her inner weasel, but those things are attached, and it’s hardnot to beat up the writer in the process...

Where Do I Start?

I’m over-worked and under-slept. Again. Why do I do this to myself?

Every time I pile on too much, I get in the middle and I promise myself never again. Then next semester, or possibly two semesters later…

I’m here! I’m alive. I may even pass all my courses, but that’s undecided as of yet.Difficult to see. Always in motion is the future.

Tired of writing papers, I am. Want to write books. All her life has she looked away… to the future, to the horizon. Never her mind on where she was. Hmm? Wha...

Experiments in Food Production

This week I hit an amazing milestone–I’ve lost 80 pounds since February 2015. I’m so thrilled about it, I’ve been doing random happy dances for days.

For the record, random happy dances can get embarrassing if one is not careful to be unobserved.

But whatever. It is a fact worthy of celebration.

I think about calories now. Not in a “no, I can’t have that!” sad miserable way, but with the idea of getting the most bang for my buck in my food budget. Did you know that a seriously delicious ice c...

Routines Set Me Free

I want to be spontaneous. I like being the wild child. The last thing I want to be is predictable. But Flylady tells me–and she’s right!–that routines set me free.

Every Sunday, I get five 8oz mason jars out of the cupboard. I fill them with various tasty ingredients for overnight oatmeal, and stick them in the fridge. Every weekday morning, I grab one. Bam! A healthy, yummy breakfast I don’t have to think about. That means I don’t have to try to cook in the mornings. I’m not tempted to spend...

Tucson Mountain High…

Okay, the parts of the Tucson Mountains that I’ve been climbing are not that high. But they are enough for me (for now) and they are great fun.

Did you know geologists actually call the mountains around me the “Tucson Mountain Chaos?” For a long time people apparently wondered where the heck these mountains came from, as they are very odd. Now the theory goes that the Catalina mountains (which are proper mountains–they get snow every year!) are actually the remains of a huge volcano–and the T...

Paper, Paper, Everywhere

I gotta get back to blogging regularly…

Tonight I’m clearing my desk a bit, and I can’t believe how much paper is piled on it. Where does all this stuff even come from?

Wherever, tonight it’s going away. I already shredded a bunch, and filed some more.

But there’s still so much…
