'No Strain', 'No Pain'

“Meditation consists of two simultaneous processes:  One is INSIGHT—paying attention to what is arising.   The other is SURRENDER---letting go of attachment to arising thoughts.   This is how you cut free of the mind.”
-Dan Millman, WAY OF THE PEACEFUL WARRIOR,
a book that changes lives

June 3, 1989I had an early start with my Saturday and managed to do a few bike laps via South Shore Beach.   I love feeling the breeze and releasing my anxieties as you know, Dear Diary.    I went to visit mom after the ride and to my pleasant surprise I found Ashley and Holly there.
During my cycling excursion I find myself in meditation mode.   I realized that I cannot take my new job in Walnut Creek at the SMART Resource Center, selling directories.   The new 2nd line manager (from NY) is a real bitch.  She met with me in her office and says I cannot apply for management jobs.   It was always easy and recommended for me to do so in my last department.   She sees me as a nuisance and she must hate men.   I cannot stand her.   I want to leave the office so badly now.   I feel like picking up dog poop, putting it in a shoebox and mailing it to her anonymously because that’s what she is full of (shit).   I may revert to my old job in San Francisco.   They’ll take me back with open arms.

I left mom’s house for an afternoon bike ride.   My tan was still fresh (from Hawaii), so it’s fun to ride around.   People drive by and probably ask themselves, “Where’s he come from?”

I took a cute pic of Holly ‘behind the wheel’ in mom’s car.   That was ultra-cute.

I took a self-portrait of myself in my cool new turquoise tank top while in my kitchen of convenience.   The tank top is a bit tight but it’ll be cool while bike riding.
Mike Miller and I set a plan to see the new RAIDERS OF THE LAST ARK film called INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE.   So that’ll be a fund Saturday night outing.

Early evening I returned to mom’s pad for a light bite.   I had Mom take a pic of me holding a LIFE magazine with her latest floral décor.
“I like to take a photo with ‘things’ that provide a feeling of time or place.   I don’t like to just stand and pose.   The LIFE magazine and your cool flowers—that match my shirt---add a little something.”Mom replied, “It does!”

Mom was watering the lawn when I had arrived.   I took a photo of this action and liked seeing my dad’s old FORD truck in the background.   Mom is considering the sale of it soon.   It’s becoming a nuisance to drive it--let alone find a parking space for it.   It doesn't have power steering so one has to use muscle to turn a corner.

It was cute to see Ashley dressed as a nurse.   Maybe that will be her profession when she grows up.   I can see her doing that…or anything she puts her mind to…for that matter.   Holly is the cute wanderer these days.  She's the explorer.

It cost almost $50 Million to make this new INDIANA JONES movie that’s directed by Steven Spielberg.   It had an interesting plot.  Indiana Jones’ father (played by Sean Connery) goes missing while pursuing the Holy Grail.   Then Indiana (Harrison Ford) follows in his father's footsteps and stops the Nazis.   Mike Miller and I really enjoyed the action.   When we got home just after midnight I snapped a shot of Miller holding the cover promo of the movie as a time capsule shot.

I liked when Sean Connery asked Indiana, “I didn't know you could fly a plane.”
And then, Indiana Jones answered,
“Fly, yes. Land, no.”

June 4, 1989The next day I pondered the beauty of my bike ride along South Shore beach, realizing that mom and Ashley don’t go to the beach often enough.   So, I called mom and planted the idea of a walk to the beach on this beautiful early summer day.

I took a series of Polaroid photos of me, mom and Ashley during our mini-escape to South Shore Beach.   While it was early summer it was still a relatively cool climate (as is usually the case in Alameda).   I yearn for warmer weather.   That’s probably why the idea of palm trees, warm beaches and Los Angeles appeals to me.   Perhaps that will happen one day.   Many at the modeling school say to me, “You should live in L.A.”   I wonder why people say this to me.   Maybe I would like it. It worked!  I replied back via correspondence to Birda and she wrote me again.   This time my cycling pal wrote a handwritten letter on lavender paper with a violet peacock pictured on the upper right hand of each of the two pages.   Birda wrote:

June 11, 1989 Michael,
Yes!  Diets are a bitch.   Just when you got on working the COOKIE MONSTER comes along with a box of OREO’s and a quart of milk (Mmmmm).   Then your bike gets a flat.   Oh well…tomorrow I’ll start again.

So far I haven’t been to any of the other ‘47’ states but I’m seeing a lot of this one.   I understand it will be about a year before I have enough time with the company to go out of state.   They like to keep you close by until they think you’ve learned enough to leave the state.   I still have a lot to learn. I do get to L.A., so if you decide to move let me know.   I’ll bring my bike (without a flat) and you can show me the best places in L.A. to ride.   I just hope I can keep up.   I still haven’t made it to LAKE CHABOT.   Every time I see that hill my bike says ‘no strain’, ‘no pain’.   I should have a long talk with that bike soon.

Florida with fireworks.   I’m jealous of your trip.   While you’re lying on the beach, soaking up the sunshine think of foggy California and me, hauling cars, stuck in this state.   When the fireworks are in the clear sky, think of fog, smog dimming the sparkles of the fireworks here.  Have Fun!   Keep Riding.   Take Care and Watch out for Cocoa Puffs. Love, Birda

Clearly…I shared with Birda about my trip to Florida to visit Dale and my love for Cocoa Puffs breakfast cereal (and my desire to move to L.A. for more sunshine and less fog). The following day I received the coolest postcard from Birda.   I love it.   It was postmarked NORTH BAY, CA.   She wrote:

Michael, Do you remember your first bike?
No matter how hard you tried your feet just wouldn’t reach the pedals.
Sending a letter soon.
Love,
Birda

Great Minds

He was grateful for his belief in a divine presence, in something deeper underlying his ephemeral existence.
-BETRAYAL of Love and Freedom,
a novel by Paul Huljich

I am taking one day at a time.  My focus is on work, graduate school and whatever else comes along.  I do have the Florida visit in early July to look forward to.   I’m excited about that.   Perhaps there’s another door to open for me or a hidden stairwell.   It will be fascinating to see what there is when I open the door or when I get to the top of the stairs. My coworker, Dorothy Rua, continues to amuse me.  She is becoming a frequent contributor to my mail box lately.   I like that.   She sent me a postcard from MERCED, CA of California Water Melons.   Dorothy wrote:

Dear Michael, There are models from MERCED…and then there are other models.   Which do you prefer?

Guess this one doesn’t need a short, tight white skirt with a slip up the back! Love, D

I also received a couple of belated Birthday postcards.   One was sent from the LONDON Transport Museum and the other was sent from LAKE TAHOE.
The card from LONDON was from Barbara Reynolds who I worked with at PAC BELL initially in 1982 in Downtown Oakland:

Happy Birthday Michael, Sorry to be late again.   I do seem to be traveling always on your Birthday.  I came over on May 25th to visit family in Southampton.   I’m now in LONDON a few days, then up to Glasgow to see what that is like for four nights.   I fly home June 15th…back to work.   I hope you had a nice Birthday.   Please forgive my tardiness.
Love, Barbara

The card from LAKE TAHOE was from a high-school classmate, Grace Reyes.   Her parents came to the USA from Guam: Dear Mike,
Belated, belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY.   We were in CHINA when you celebrated your special day.   I guess you heard all about it from Anthony Battu.   I’d like to go back to see the rest of the country.   Lucky First Family—they had a nice tour at our expense.   Anyway, I really enjoyed myself.   We went river rafting yesterday.   It’s about 75-78 degrees F in the sun and there’s still snow in the mountain tops.   Played badminton, too…reminds me of high-school.   Today we’re heading out to Sandy Beach and Fireworks at Tahoe City like every year.   Enjoy the rest of the summer.   All the best!  Love, Grace

On May 29thI had a good laugh.   I rode my bike over to mom’s house and she was wearing the same HYATT WAIKOLOA T-Shirt that I bought for her during my trip to Hawaii this month.I said, “Great minds think alike, Mom!”
She laughed.   It was worthy of a photograph.

“I’ll always protect you, Michael, it’s my job.”--- Becca Winstone (played by actress Ashley Judd) to her son,  Michael Winstone (played by Nick Eversman) in the 2012 series MISSING.

ROCK ON!

‘A man was tested sometimes, and the true test of a man was whether he could get off the floor and still be a champion.’
-Darcy O’Brien, A WAY OF LIFE, LIKE ANY OTHER

May 26, 1989I received some meaningful Birthday cards.  The one from Dale Orlando of a man in his sexy swim trunks was most-inspiring.  I wanted ‘to be’ and resemble the model on the card.  He is now living in Hollywood, Florida and I promised to visit him in early July 1989.   I know he’ll make it fun.   His humorous side alone will make it a hoot.

Dale said, “He does look like you.   That’s why I picked it.”"Yeah, right,” I laughed

Inside the card it was imprinted “THERE!  Just for a minute, didn’t you forget all about having a birthday?  (Hope it’s happy!), Dale wrote his own personal words as well:

Happy Birthday.  I hope you can be with someone like him on your 30th birthday.  WOW…30 years old.   I just can’t believe that you’re going to be 30.   You are no spring chicken anymore.   You are now troll status.

I am looking forward to your visit here in Florida.    Have fun in Hawaii and have a Happy Birthday.   Remember I like macadamia nuts.   This card should keep you for at least six months.  Love, DaleMichael Miller also sent a most amusing Happy 18th Birthday Card.   I liked that.  Ha-ha

Michael G Miller wrote:

Happy Birthday 1989.   You finally made it to your third decade in life.   How do you feel?   Any different?   I hope you like this card.  I figured that you could be 18 with 12 years of experience.   That way you can be my age, although this card was for an eighteenth birthday.  I hope you enjoy your birthday and every day of your 30th.   I’m over in Sacramento doing some work over at CSUS for AT&T, of course.   I’m staying at the RED LION also and it’s OK.   I guess I won’t see you for your big Birthday.   I was in Chico last week and I really enjoyed myself up there.   It’s a very nice town.   The Sacramento River and a few creeks run through town and there are many shaded trees there.   How was Hawaii?   I bet you had a lot of fun.   You must have.  You keep looking going back.   At least this time you had your expenses paid.   I wanted to go to the Islands, too but this travel work trip came up.   I wanted to see what it was like.   I thought of it as a partial vacation.  Work and then relax.  Chico was that way, but Sacramento is a lot busier.   It seems to have gotten a little more congested than in 1987.   I’ll be back on Monday night.   I’m going up to Oroville on Friday.   I’ll give you a call when I get back.
It’s hard to write without a hard surface.   Happy Birthday Again 5/26/89.   Take Care, Your Friend, Michael Miller

Of course, my Grandma always sends me a Birthday Card every year and includes a crisp twenty-dollar bill.   Grandma wrote:

Dear Grandson, …Hoping you have a nice Birthday and many more.   God Bless you…and he will take care of you wherever you are.  Love, Grandma Lucero

Paloma wins the award for sending me three or four Birthday Cards.  In this most recent one she wrote the following:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Some of us don’t forget others’ Birthdays!   This card is NOT very pretty or original but I was in a hurry to find one.   (…but at least it’s a Birthday Card!  Better ugly than never!)

Yesterday, I went to Ales (Languedoc-Roussillon region of France) to see my friend, COCO (remember her?) at the hospital.   She just had a baby girl (GIULIA).   She already has a boy, 14 months old, called ENZO.   I also saw Regi and Zon Zon (the proud daddy).
PHOTO:  REGI, COCO, PALOMA, ZON-ZON, 1985
Regi is also expecting another baby (his wife at least!).   We talked about you.   Did we go to Coco and Zonzon’s house in Vaucresson?  Do you remember that?  Well, I have to send this letter fast now so that you get it for the 26th.  Miss You, Love, Paloma
I WISH YOU A VERY VERY VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!  Alexandre and Jonathan, too.  PHOTO: 1985,Paris - REGI, COCO, 'me',  ZONZON

My Birthday wouldn’t be complete without a very funny card from Mitch Schwartz who accompanied me to my business award function in Hawaii earlier this month.   Mitch also had Louise Long (a wonderful co-worker that I miss) write in the card.   She taped a penny in the card and wrote:
Hi Michael, Thanks for the card from HAWAII, telling me about the trip that I did not win (Ha-ha).   I know you have no money after such a trip, so I am giving you some money (don’t leave it in one place).  LOU(…and that’s why she taped the single penny onto the card).

Mitch wrote:
Dear Mike,

Have a great B-Day you OLD MAN.   Hawaii was a fantasy come true THNX 2 You.   Love ya, Mitch
He included a yellow post-it with the written words WHO SENT ME THIS STREET ADRESS GUIDE?   I found this hysterical and he knew I would.   This is because it’s very competitive in my current office at the SMART RESOURCE CENTER to sell street address guide directories.   There are some grifter employees who have consults with customers and simply include a Street Address Guide when the customer didn’t request to purchase it.   And so, the gorilla statement is typical of customers one month later who see the charge on their bill and question it.  My dear bike-riding pal, Birda also sent me a funny card.   The cover of the card was imprinted IT’S YOUR BIRTHDAY and inside was written ‘GO GET SHIT-FACED!’.   Ugh….The cover photo said it all.

Birda wrote:
I couldn’t find a card with a BIKE on it.   This sounded like the next best thing.  Have a good one…whatever you do.  B.B.

May 27, 1989 I had to work on my Birthday (Friday, May 26th) in Walnut Creek.   There wasn’t much attention made in my new office about my special day.   I didn’t feel bad because I had a great Birthday weekend planned.   I started early on Saturday morning, May 27th, with a visit to mom’s house.

My weekend would continue with a planned visit to the Santa Cruz area with 'Jim from the Gym' and Chris.  I was looking forward to that the new beach escape.

Mom and I went to breakfast at OLE’S WAFFLE SHOP together, and then we went to the Alameda Flea Market.   While roaming the aisle ways we came across a group of porcelain dolls.
“This is definitely your station, Mom,” I laughed and took a photo of her next to the dolls for sale.

The next part of the afternoon included an outing with mom, John, Sherri, and the girls (Ashley and Holly) to the ALAMEDA COUNTY FAIR at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds.   I had my share of fun by just taking photos of John and Sherri on the merry-go-round (of LIFE).   The kids were happy and it made for a fun family outing for my Birthday weekend.

During the latter part of the evening I was invited to San Ramon.  Christine Hicks and Jim from the Gym were doing a BBQ.   I couldn’t turn that down.   They’re both too much FUN to be with. Its clear Cwissy is HOH (Head Over Heels) over Jim.   I wonder how long this will last.   Or when will the wedding bells chime?   Jim has such Frank Sinatra blue-eyes.   She must love looking into them.

I said, “Jim, it’s gonna be great in CAPITOLA tomorrow.   We’ve got to BEACH IT!”
“Yeah…we’ve got to BEACH it!”

Jim cracks me up when he enunciates certain phrases.   It’s always a comedy of excess laughter whenever I’m with Jim or Cwissy.

I found an iridescent postcard of an interstellar scene of an astronaut exploring another orbit.   It is how feel at times.   I have that yearning to explore and find what no one has yet found.  I found this to be a perfect, unique postcard to send to Paloma earlier today .   I wrote:

May 27, 1989 Dear Paloma,
Thanks for the sweet Birthday Card.  Yikes!  I’m 30 years old.   Oh well…

UNITED AIRLINES never called me.  I have not applied for any other airline.   I want to wait n’ see.  Yes, I want to learn FRENCH!   That would be fun.   How do you like this card?  It’s hard to TOP your cards.  I’m going to have to look for the perfect housewarming gift for your new pad.   Did you get my cassette tape of new songs?   By now I’m sure.  I’m tan again.  Miss Ya,  Love, Michael
May 28, 1989
We made it to the Santa Cruz beach territories.  We found out way to the Capitola Village area and the MARGARITAVILLE there.

I was excited about our pitcher of Margarita and my intention was to feel that ‘30’ buzz.   I certainly did.   This day proved—yet again—that if you really want to have a great time you will.   It’s all part of one’s mind set.  I was with great company (Jim and Chris).   We were hysterically laughing over silliness.  It was one unforgettable afternoon. It really turned out okay that Kelly (Cwissy’s pal) wasn’t with me.   It was clearly over between us and my 30thBirthday made for a unique friendship that proves solid between me, Jim and Chris.   The music was cool, the beach was great and we have more fun-filled memories ahead.
ROCK On,”  Jim said.
That was one of the hot new songs of the day, ROCK ON by Michael Damian:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2v-DMpgO7o
I agreed, "Yeah, ROCK ON!"

The Capitola Village was crowded on this Memorial Day Weekend.   There were a lot of pretty faces and bodies to look at, too.   I really liked this small beach town.  I could see myself living in a setting just like this someday.  It has such quality charm.   It’s in Santa Cruz County and is on the coast of Monterey Bay (a lovely area).

I wrote another postcard the following day(May 28th) as I’d forgot to mention my new escape to Florida and my 30th Birthday escape to Santa Cruz (our old beach stomping grounds).

May 28, 1989 Dear Paloma,
How’s this for an original postcard?   I’m flying to FLORIDA on July 1 and returning July 9th.   I’ve never been there.   I can’t wait.   I need to get in-shape and stop thinking of the Bavarian Cream éclairs that are in my mom’s refrigerator.

It can be about $400 roundtrip from San Francisco to Hawaii if you get a good package deal.   If/When you go let me know, so we can cross paths!   And remember that you, Alexandre, Jonathan always have a place to stay in the Bay Area!

Well, I’m going to go bike ride for a while.
I went to Santa Cruz-Capitola Yesterday.  Your name came up.  Do remember our railroad track poses in Santa Cruz?
Love, Michael

The Last Crusade

The ritual of writing---the choosing of the paper, the finding of the pen, the convening of thoughts, the drawing of the letters---was an intimate act that sometimes gave him the pleasure of KISSING.
--Colin Channer,
WAITING IN VAIN, a novel

...And so, it was time to send Paloma a postcard from the Big Island.   I found a cool hotel postcard that gave perspective as to where I was located that was perfect.   I made it short and simple.  I wrote:

May 16, 1989
Paloma,
This is the 62-acre resort that I'm staying at on the Big Island.   It's nice and tropical.   The company is catering to my every need (well, ALMOST every need--Ha-ha).

I listen to your French tunes by the pool and the cocktail waitresses ask, "Where are you from?"
Ha-ha.
Love,
Michael J Armijo

The final days in Hawaii were approaching.   I thought it was smart of me to bring a white sport jacket to wear during the Pac Bell Directory Awards night.   It was too Hawaiian HOT to be wearing something dark.
As the last days progressed at the Hyatt Waikoloa Hotel Mitch and I would go out and have our share of Pina colada cocktails.   We’d both feel squeamish every time we’d run into a fellow co-worker.I would say, “OH no…I see Steve Adams coming our way.”
Mitch would say, “Barf…here comes VIVIAN!”
It was rather hysterical.  He makes me laugh.

May 19, 1989Once I was had returned home in Alameda I was happy to find another letter from one of my 4th grade students, Samantha Du.  She had received the postcard I sent her and remembered about my trip to Hawaii.  Her letter made me smile from ear to ear.  Samantha wrote:

May 18, 1989 Dear Mr. Armijo
How was your trip to Hawaii?   Could you send me a picture of you in Hawaii?   Inside the berry envelope there is a bear-y present for you.   I really miss you.   I really enjoyed everything you thought of me.   I wanted to write you because I feel bad and sad these full days.  I had nothing to do.   I am so excited to write to you.   Well, I have nothing to say.   OH yeah, here is a poem:
ROSES ARE RED
VIOLETS ARE BLUE
YOUR ARE SO CUTE
MY FRIENDS THINK
YOU ARE TOO!

Ha-ha-ha!   I hope you like the poem. Your Pal, Samantha DuA few days later I was happy to receive a Birthday letter from my ‘sometimes’ bike riding partner, Birda, who also lives in Alameda (or used to).

Michael,
How are you?   I’ am writing to wish you a HAPPY BIRTHDAY.   You thought I’d forget!    You are how old now…let’s see, 24?  No, you’ll be 28.  No, that’s not right either.   Well, whatever you are on the 26thI hope it’s happy.

I’ve been doing fine.   I’ve gained some weight…not riding my bike makes a big difference.   Everywhere! I have a new job, driving a truck.  Yep, BIG trucks.   I got into car hauling with a company called PMT (Pacific Motor Trucking).   It’s a union job with full benefits and everything.   What a difference from Sanchez Trucking.   I didn’t think I would ever haul cars.   It’s fun and scary but I’ve always been a little crazed.

I’m staying in San Leandro right now, looking for a place in Alameda again.   I miss riding my bike a lot.   Hopefully when I move back I’ll have time.   My job takes me through 48 states, so I’m gone a lot. Other than that I’m what you call a working fool (6AM to 6PM+).   I’m just glad I like it so much.

So, how’s everything with you?   Still riding?   Still working for PAC BELL?   Still on Bay Farm Island?   Where did you go for vacation last? I still have my P.O. Box in Clearlake Oaks, so if you have time…send a letter.   I look forward to hearing from you.
Take Care, Love, Birda
(Your Bike Buddy)

P.S. See ya at the beach!
The other surprise card arrived a couple of days later from an ex-beau (Chad Mark Glen).   I was surprised because he didn’t really write anything.  He simply included a handsome, smiling photo of himself to go along with his San Francisco State University announcement of his forthcoming graduation in June 1989.   He graduates with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Communications.  The photo made me believe he was reaching out for me to reach out.    It’s almost as if it’s The Last Crusade.

Photo:  Chad Mark Glen

It's Ironic that on May 24ththe third and last installment of the Harrison Ford RAIDERS OF THE LAST ARK films will be released.   It’s called INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE.   I do intend on seeing it.  Perhaps it will provide some answers ‘in living life’.

I wrote back to all of the above (Samantha Du, Birda Briggs and Chad Mark Glen).  Let’s see if they reply to my reply.   People are a work-in-progress.   They’re like snow.   Sometimes it sticks, sometimes it does not.   Women made such swell friends.  Awfully swell.  In the first place, you had to be IN LOVE with a woman to have a basis of friendship.

Relinquished Any Hopes

‘Sure…they’re clever and quick, but they don’t think outside-the-box; they’re all about convention.’
-THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN,
a novel
by Garth Stein

My new pal/co-worker, Dorothy Rua, in Walnut Creek at the Pac Bell SMART Resource Center and I have a special rapport going.   We joke and share our lunches together.   We gossip about the people and management that are over-the-top.   Dorothy was not hired from within the firm like me…but she is simply shocked by the way things operate within the organization.   We have to ‘get by’ somehow, so our jokes and laughter help us along immensely.    She knew I was going to Hawaii soon and sent me a cool SNOOPY card (also signed by our other coworker pal, Tonee).   The inside of the card had the imprinted question “WHAT’S UP WITH YOU?”   Then Dorothy wrote:
Aloha Michael,
Ooops, didn’t mean to get personal.   Hope you’re having a great, great time!   You can tell by the pictures we’re not.  Jealous?   Right….
Your Pals,
DOROTHY and TONEE

Paloma also sent another Birthday card.   She included the perfect kind of chocolates (the kind I cannot eat as they were simply pictured on the card).  Ha-ha.  Paloma wrote: May 11, 1989Dear Michael,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!  So, 30, huh?   You’re lucky I can’t remember what you said for my Birthday…but anyway don’t worry.   You’ll get over it.   I only thought it would be better to send you the picture instead of the real thing.   Seems like you go to HAWAII pretty often, right?   By the way…is it expensive to fly from SF to Hawaii?   How much?   I’m just thinking about our holidays in January 1990.

My new job is OK right now.   I’m alone.   Alexandre still works somewhere else.   What I hate is to have to move.   Our new apartment is smaller, so it’s hard to decide where to put everything but I have reserved another apartment for us where I stock part of our stuff.   This place is brand new so we don’t have that many customers yet.  I might take another apartment…

I answered Paloma's recent letter today, May 14th, on Mother's Day and included a cassette tape of new songs.   I wrote the following:

May 14, 1989
Dear Paloma,

Today’s MOTHER’s DAY.   Happy Mom’s Day to you.   I made a cassette tape of songs for you today.   I designed the cover myself.   I hope you like.  I chose some favorite songs of mine, too. I’m watching a bicycle road race on TV called the TOUR DE TRUMP.

I took mom out for breakfast and my niece, Ashley, (who just turned 5 on 5-8-89) joined us.. Tomorrow morning I fly out to HAWAII again.   How stressful…Ha-ha.  I’ll have a great tan.  I’m due for a new tan.

Around the end of this year I am considering moving to Southern California…like Corona del Mar or Newport Beach.   I want to live down there (near the beach).  How is Jonathan?   How old is he now/   I know I always ask that—but I forget—I was going to buy him an outfit but I wasn’t sure how the size would work out.

Oh well…I just wanted to send you these tunes and let you know I was thinking of you.  I hope you haven’t moved yet.   I’ll need your new address.   I hope you get this.  I’m sure you will. I guess I’m due to send you some pictures.   I’ll try and take a few while I’m in Hawaii and send them to you.
Keep smiling.  Listen closely to the tunes.  Missing You.
Love, Uncle Mike
May 15, 1989

I arrived in Honolulu and took a separate flight to the Big Island.   Everyone was taking other flights but I flew with Mitch Schwartz.   It was grand when we arrived at the Hyatt Waikoloa Hotel because we took little tugboats to get to our room.   After we unpacked and got situated Mitch and I took a walk all around the hotel.   Mitch took a few pics of me…one on the balcony of our room, wearing a lei; one by a huge bronze/golden statue and another one when I was wearing my favorite bike ride outfit (I figured I could get away with wearing it in Hawaii without being on a bike).

After a couple of days we were accustomed to the hotel.   One day Mitch walked out of the bathroom completely naked.   I just looked in surprise and pretty much turned away.   I wasn’t going to ‘go there’.   I’m sure that was a ploy by him to see if I’d make a move.   I had no interest but sincere friendship with him.   I’m sure he got the message because he didn’t try doing that again.   I relinquished any hopes of seeing Steven Antol in Hawaii on this particular trip.   It would have been easier if I was on the island of OAHU (and who knows if he wasn't up in the air or in Korea or Japan...for that matter).  Mitch and I had already had a few nights with our fellow coworkers.   The formal Award night was coming on my May 18th…and we were having great morale lifting activities between our coworkers and management.  It didn’t seem to make too much sense for me since I’m in a new department now; however, one never knows.   If things don’t improve in Walnut Creek I can always transition back to my old job at PAC BELL DIRECTORY.   I have seriously considered it because the new boss in Walnut Creek has been hired from New York (after working at SPRINT) and she’s a real ball-buster.   She’s not nice to me.  It’s hard for me to dislike anyone; however, it’s easy to hate this broad.   Why does she hate me so much?

For now, let me enjoy the Hawaiian Island style…"You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there’s still going to be somebody who hates peaches.”

May 8th: A Freedom Date

“You can make choices and change your present circumstances.  You can alter your future.”
-Dan Millman,
Way of the Peaceful Warrior

Madonna is all the rage again.  Her song, LIKE A PRAYER, has been on the top of the charts since April 16th.   I wonder if it is getting people to become more in touch with their spiritual side.   I do like the way she produced/choreographed her music video for it:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79fzeNUqQbQ It’s Birthday month again.   My niece, Ashley, will be 5 years old on May 8th.   My brother, Tony, will be turning thirty-one on May 12th.   I will be turning the big “30” on May 26th.  Yikes!   I must plan something special.

Ashley’s Birthday falls on a Monday this year, so her mom, Sherri, is planning a party for her on Sunday, May 7th.   I’m happy to attend.   My mom says that her mom (my grandmother) will be there also.   It will be fun to see all of the kids together (Ashley, Lauren, Holly and Leigh).

May 7, 1989I snapped some cool pictures on the day of Ashley’s Party.  I teased mom and Helen about wearing the same color blue.   They both look good in that color, so it was a smart choice.

Ashley was on cloud nine over her cake and presents.   She had one of her good neighborhood friends (Sarah) there also.   I took some good photos of the kids.   They were only Polaroid shots but I feel they captured some sensitive, happy moments.
I sometimes wonder if Ashley realizes the significance of her birthday almost 40 years before she was born.   May 8, 1945 is the VICTORY IN EUROPE DAY:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victory_in_Europe_Day
World War II ended after Adolf Hitler committed suicide on April 30, 1945 during the Battle of Berlin.  V-Day is celebrated in Europe on May 8th and it is the significant public holiday that marked the end of World War II.   It’s a freedom date for hopeful, new beginnings.

I received a new letter from Paloma.   She wrote:
Michael,
Shall I send your things to your mom's?   What happened with that flight-attendant job?   After May 31st write at my new address.

What are you going to do for your Birthday?  That's an important one: "30".

You never sent me a picture of your mom's dolls, so I don't know what to look for.

I have to send this letter right now if I want you to get it for your Birthday, Monday is a holiday here, so I'll stop writing.

When are you going to learn FRENCH...lazy bum.   You could practice with me (maybe I should write you in French?)   Write me.
Missing you.  Love, Paloma

I also received another letter from one of my 4th grade students at the SF Elementary School.   This one was from Jenny Mac.  Jenny wrote in such perfect writing.   She's the one who says I reminded her of the singer, George Michael (Ha-ha).  She’s a smart one:

May 8, 1989 Dear Mr. Armijo,
How are you doing?   Like your new job?   I really enjoyed having you in our class.   Our class missed you very much, especially Samantha, Deana and I.   Dr. Crowley is going to have a new partner, I hope he or she would be as nice as you are.

Things are going pretty well in our class.   We are participating in a DRAMA PROGRAM.   At the end of five months we will be putting on a play for our school.   I’m really looking forward to it.   We will also be having a science fair.   We’re going to be displaying our inventions and our ads to other classes.   I’m looking forward to that too. I hope I’ll have a chance to see you again.   Write back soon.   Well, gotta go…Ta, Ta.   Sincerely, Your Pal, Jenny Mac

PS-Hope you liked my picture and poem.   Thanks for the box of chocolates (Could I have a picture of you?). POEM by Jenny Mac:
WHEN I’M BLUE
I THINK OF YOU,
YOU’RE SO COOL,
THAT I MISS YOU,
AND THAT IS TRUE.
Every time has its own evil, but a human being can still be good.

The Truth

There would be punishment and pain, and there would be happiness, too.   That was writing.
-Markus Zusak, THE BOOK THIEF

I received another postcard from Steven Antol from the SHERATON WALKER HILL in Seoul, Korea.  I’m excited because I will be going to Hawaii again in mid-May for that company award/conference.  The truth is that I am hoping to see Steven but he’s on OAHU and I’m not sure I will see him since I will be on the Big Island of Hawaii.   Also, Mitch Schwartz is traveling with me.   Perhaps I should’ve simply gone alone.   I’ll make the best of it.  This trip is only a few weeks away.  Steven wrote: Dear Michael, Today I am in SEOUL, KOREA.  I woke up a little while ago.  I’m going downtown and try my luck on finding a nice jacket.   It’s about 37 degrees outside.   You know I’ll be freezing.   I fly back to JAPAN today, and turn around and fly back to SEOUL for one more night.

Hey, remind me to tell you about a story in the park at the temple.   It’s pretty funny.   WOW…only a few more days until the interview.   Well, when you get this it’s probably over.  You’ve done a great job.   I knew they would like you.   Hey…Have a GREAT Day.   S-
I received another letter dated April 23, 1989, JAPAN, from Steven Antol.   It almost seemed like a closure to our relationship in some ways as he mentions an ironing out with his ex-named KAULA (I guess he is Hawaiian).   He also asked about my relationship with Kelly which I found strange.  He knows that’s totally over now.  It’s not easy having a long-distance romance with someone who is up in the air half of the time. Hi Michael,
I just got back to JAPAN today.   I had a few days off and returned to Honolulu.   I moved most of my things back.  I have three more days to work here and then I’ll move home at the end of this month.   I’m really ready to return now.   I’ve had enough of JAPAN.   I don’t want to study.   I don’t want to watch Japanese TV or eat Japanese food.   I just want to go to the beach.

Thanks for the beautiful card.   The underwater photo was beautiful.   I also got the postcard with the nuns on it.   That was funny.   I visited with HERMAN and EDDIE.   They asked about you, of course.   They wondered what happened since he left a few messages but never got a hold of you.   Anyway, I told them that you were fine.   They thought you were a really nice guy.   And I thought that was certainly THE TRUTH. If I don’t talk with you in SFO before you get to Hawaii I’ll call you at the Hotel between the 15th and 19th of May.   I have no idea where I’ll be during that time.   I probably won’t get to fly over to the Big Island (where you will be)…but just enjoy every day there.   You deserve it.

I’m still working on the relationship with Kaula.   We spent a good bit of time together on my last trip talking things over and trying to figure out where things may go.   This is a really confusing time for me.   I feel kind of silly talking about me in another relationship…but during this time I am thinking of YOU, Michael, a terrific friend who I met only a few months ago…and always wish you the BEST. I’ll keep in touch and hope you’ll do the same.  Hey…what’s happening with you and Kelly?  Did you get together?

Aloha and Sayonara, S- My days as a part-time school teacher ended last month but I love when I receive a letter or postcard from one of the students.   This time it was written in pencil by another Steven (too cute).  He included his photo, too.   Steven wrote:
Steven Su, 516 Ellis St. #208, S.F., CA 94109 Dear Mr. Armijo,

Thank you for teaching me how to write paragraph.   Thank you for coming and teaching us.   I like you gave one the postcard and ads and thank you for teaching me how to make the ad for my invention.   I apolshated (appreciated) you coming.   I hope I can see you again. Sincerely Room 8 Student,
Steven Su

I found the most colorful postcard called ANGLE OF THE ASPHALT, A miracle on Maplewood Drive (from a calendar print around 1j954) that I just loved.   I decided to mail it to Paloma on April 28, 1989.   I couldn’t resist posting a porky pig sticker on the card.  Porky pig makes me laugh.  I wrote:

4-28-89, Paloma: Your new venture sounds exciting.  If you’re going to be in the process of moving and working and getting settled…a visit in July 89 may not be such a good idea.   I may go to FLORIDA because an old friend/co-worker (DALE ORLANDO—I don’t know if you met him) moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.   Maybe I will go there.

I think we’ll hook-up soon though.   Time is passing and we should get-together.  You seem to write great ENGLISH still!  You’re ok!   I bought this card at SF-North beach area and I thought it was neat.   Hope you like…thanks for the card of the gal in the negligee in the shoe (cool card).   I’m currently unattached relationship-wise.  No biggee though.   Later.
Love, Michael J Armijo

The Atmosphere is so Different

Dreams are dangerous lovers that must be hidden away in secret rooms.
-Jose Luis DE Vilallonga,
THE PLEASURE SEEKER

April 15, 1989

I wrote Paloma a postcard today, depicting a beautiful skyline view of San Francisco.   I was still high on the dream to return to France. I wrote:Hi Paloma,
I thought you’d like this picturesque memory.

I laughed the other day when I was in my car and turned on my car light for ‘Jim from the Gym’ and his girlfriend, Chris, in order to read something.    They laughed aloud…and it made me think of YOU because the car light is not on top of the convertible and only lights-up the feet area…remember that?
Funds are tight but I may squeeze together some $$$ to go to FRANCE yet.  I will have the 4th of JULY week off from work (I hope).  It was a great 4-hour bike ride day TODAY!   Well, I am thinking of you OFTEN.  Hello to Jonathan and Alexandre.
Always, Michael J Armijo

April 16, 1989I hustled out for another bike ride on the Sunday.   I needed to release anxieties.

I drive out to Walnut Creek now (Monday thru Friday) and the commute is better because most are driving in to The City while I’m going the opposite direction.  The SMART RESOURCE CENTER is keen on sales and we sell published Yellow Page Directories statewide and throughout the continental USA.  The big prize is in selling the Business to Business Directory.

My sales results are pretty good but the atmosphere is so different from my other department at PBD-Pacific Bell Directory.  I'm not appreciated as much.   I am not seen as the stellar likely candidate for the next management job because this is a brand new department with newbies (including employees that were just hired off of the street from other forms of employment because of their sales experience).  The main 2nd Line boss is a real bitch from New York who used to work for SPRINT.   She hates me.   What did I ever do to her?  I don't understand it.  I’ve met one cool black gal named Tonee and another great gal named Dorothy Rua.   Dorothy Rua is very cool and easy to get along with.   She has a birthmark or ‘condition’ on her face that is visible but I don’t see it.  Her personality and friendliness outshines this.   Dorothy is a sweetheart and she’s my newest friend.   She is recently divorced and has two children. After my bike ride I stopped over at mom’s house.   Mom was babysitting Holly.   I captured a cute pic of Holly upon her arrival.   She had just come from a Birthday Party and was still wearing the party hat.

I returned to mom’s pad later to watch TV and decided to spend the night there and drive from mom’s house to work.   I lounged in my robe, watching DYNASTY.   The series finale is next month and it looks like this will be the last season (Season 9).

April 20, 1989
Paloma wrote back from AGDE, France.   She may be moving away from her 10 Rue Jean Roger address in AGDE.   Here is the latest scoop with her: Dear Michael,

I’ve got lots of things to tell you but I don’t have much time.   I’m working a lot.  I’ve had exams for all of this week.   I still have one tomorrow morning and maybe again in June.  I say maybe because I’m right in the middle of big changes.   Do you understand that?   I wonder now that I really realize how shitty my English is…I’ll tell you the grade I get.   I just can’t believe the mistakes I made (in English).   I’m really ashamed to say I lived in the States for three years!   I can’t believe myself.   Did I tell you I have problems to understand the NEWS in English TV?   I can’t believe I watched TV all the time in Berkeley with no problem at all.   Oh well!   That’s pretty sad.
Back to the changes…we’ve been offered a job (Alexandre and I), a job I find really interesting.   We would be in-charge of a CLUB RESIDENCE (it’s kind of like a hotel) except we wouldn’t rent rooms--but apartments--for at least one week.   There are 106 apartments right now but they’re building 50 more.   I would be the hostess (receiving people), taking care of them and of the planning of the rooms (and making them pay the bills).   Alexandre would be some kind of public relations person doing things to entertain them and stuff.   There is a swimming pool, a tennis court and a barbecue.   So I guess sometimes we would have parties.   I don’t exactly know yet what we’re going to do but we would be by ourselves with no boss behind us.   What do you think about that?  That was the good part.   Now here is the bad one.   This is a brand-new place.   The company that owns it doesn’t expect to rent more than thirty-percent of the apartments a year (which in fact is good for me).   That means less work but that means also that nobody else (except, of course, some cleaning ladies and someone to fix broken things and stuff) is going to be hired this year.   So we’re going to have to stay there all of the time (either me or Alexandre—some days one of us might be enough.   They promised us next year we would hire someone.

And here is the worst part…we have to move.   We have an apartment there that we wouldn’t pay for…we have no choice.   We have to live there if we want the job.   This place is free but small.   I got used to the place we live in right now.   I think I told you I really like it.   Too bad I think you won’t get to see it.   We have to go to a new town which—in fact---is not very far from here.   Still…I really like it here, so that’s why I’m not that happy.    Alexandre can’t understand that.  He really wants this job.   We would make pretty good money, and then maybe we could go to the states.   Right now we can only have vacations in January and February.   Well, I’ll let you know my new address pretty soon.

Now when you come you can have your own apartment.  Unfortunately this year I don’t think I’ll be really able to take care of you.   I wanted to show you so many things around here.   Pezenas, France is where MOLIERE lived.PHOTO:  Tour de France in Pezenas

I want you to see SETE which is sometimes called the ‘French’ Venice.   I think this summer I’m going to be really busy.   That’s why I don’t know if I’ll be able to pass my exams (that’s not exactly the worst part). I have to go now.   I’ll write again soon.  Write me to tell me what you think about all of this.  Miss You.   Love You, Paloma

One Never Knows

Inside each of us resides the truth…
…in THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN:
James Bond escaped his hall of mirrors by breaking glass, shattering the illusions, until only the true villain stood before him.   We, too, must shatter the mirrors.   We must look into ourselves and root out the distortions until that thing which we know in our hearts is perfect and true, stands before us.
We can’t have everything we want.   Sometimes, we simply have to believe.
--THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN
by Garth Stein, a novel

April 8, 1989A few changes have taken place in my life lately.  I am now working in Walnut Creek and it’s a big change from working in the City (San Francisco).   Walnut Creek is more of a big suburb and this new position at Pacific Bell with SMART Yellow Pages could lead to a higher paying commission sales job for me sooner versus later.

I was still keeping up with my classes at the ELITE Modeling School in San Francisco though.   A part of me wondered if it wasn’t just a waste of money; however, I find that I am gaining knowledge from some of the studies that could help me in other ways for my future.  One never knows.   Two of the girls who work at the ELITE School were having a party in San Francisco.   I confirmed with Maria that I would definitely attend the party.   Maria seems to like me and we flirt with each other a lot.  I feel as though we have a connection that could blossom.  We've gone out together a couple of times and we seem to 'click'.  I wonder how she really feels about me.  She has a shy quality when she's with me 'at times' (which I kind of like).  I was a bit nervous about going to this party alone, so I persuaded ‘Jim from the Gym’ and Michael Miller to join me.   They were agreeable.
I said, “There could be a gorgeous model of your dreams there.”

And so, Jim and Mike jumped on the offer about going to the party.   Once we arrived the place seemed rather ‘dead’.   I believe that I learned ‘at this party’ that any party is what you choose to make of it; therefore, I chose to have a good time.   I did.   I was in mingling mode and friendly.   It made it easier to be relaxed and feel good.   I’m not so sure if Jim or Mike had as good a time.   They seemed to mingle away rather easily though.  It all worked out.

After the party I drove back to Alameda and Mike and Jim came in to my pad to shoot the breeze over another beer.   Mike was showing off his motorcycle to Jim in the garage.   A motorcycle is not my game.  I prefer my speedster BIANCHI bicycle.
April 10, 1989I was happy to receive another letter from the REDDING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.   This time it was a Thank You card from one of the students by the name of Brian Ly.

Brian wrote:   Dear Mr. Armijo, Hi.   I am Brian Ly.   Are you having a good time?   Thank you for what you teach us.  I learn a lot from you.  I hope you will come to visit us.  Please write back to me about what you are doing.   Thanks again.  From Brian Ly
April 11, 1989Brian’s thoughtful letter got me in the mood of writing myself.  I also received a letter from Paloma.  I sent Brian a short postcard of appreciation.  Paloma’s letter inspired me to share more of my emotions and what was going on with me now.   I really wished I could see her again and I made it clear in my letter.  I wrote the following letter on a 'Wedding In The Park' card that I found for Paloma:

April 11, 1989, 9:05PM Dear Paloma,
I received your card today.   Thanks.

I started a new job as a Direct Telemarketing Rep in Walnut Creek with Pac Bell Directory still—but it’s a nice change and could mean a lot more money because I will be getting commission based on what I sell.  I am getting to know my new fellow workers.   We played a game of ‘getting to know one another’.   We each revealed a little something special.   I shared this:  ‘The neat feeling of being in the FRENCH Countryside at a beautiful wedding…the helium-filled balloon, etc., etc.’

Do you remember that?  I thought this card appropriate for that time.  I miss you a lot.   In fact, as I was moving from my old pad to mom’s house I realized I hadn’t been to Paris since September 1985!   And so…I’d like to fly to see you in July or early to mid-August 1j989.   Which time is better for you?  Will it be okay with Jonathan and Alexandre?  Which airport should I arrange to fly in to?   I’d like to go to New York for a few days, London a few and then spend a week in Agde (the South of France).   We need to get together.   It’s time to see each other.   What goods would you like me to bring to you?   Didn’t you want some 501 button-fly LEVI’s?

I’m sort of dating Maria…still.  As for the Steven character…he is still friendly with me but there’s no more intimate involvement because I simply cannot commit to anyone who is off and about every which way in the airline business.   So…we are just friends.   It’s just as well because there’s no real future in a man-to-man relationship on an intimate level anyway (if you know what I mean).   I feel a little embarrassed telling you about that…but I didn’t want to NOT mention where it let and/or what had happened with it all between Steven and me.

The last four days were over 90 degrees in San Francisco.  This hadn’t happened for four days in a row since 1939.   I have a tan for my next trip to Hawaii already.  Ha-ha…I know I won’t mention that surprise trip.   I will send you another postcard about it. Oh well…I’m going to do some push-ups.   Thinking of You.   Are you still in good shape?  Love, Michael

Coincidentally, I received a HAWAII postcard from Steven Antol the next day.  Steven wrote the postcard while in Narita, JAPAN Hi Michael,
I bought this card a while back but it only resurfaced recently in my suitcase.   I thought you’d enjoy this one.   I’m working today but I received no assignment.   Just as well…because I feel a little sick today…sore throat, chills, etc.   I’ve been flying a lot.   What a quick trip!   That’s probably why I feel the way I do.  Hey, thanks for the MARILYN card and the MADONNA picture.  I love them both.   Send your mail to the HNL P.O. Box from now on, ok?
Sayonara,
S

April 14, 1989I found another card in my mailbox that was much more fun and amusing though.  It was from my friend, Mitch Schwartz, at Pac Bell Directory.

I no longer work with Mitch but he sent a card that made me laugh.  He used his gestures with footnotes on the card and clipped typewritten clips of our coworkers’ notes as we dealt with customers.  It made me laugh.

I chose Mitch as my guest to accompany me to Hawaii.  I will be going to Hawaii again in mid-May because I was honored for my productive nature in business at PAC BELL.   I was allowed to bring a guest and I chose Mitch.  I know he will make it all the more fun.  He will know many of the coworkers, so it will make for a grand time.   I look forward to the adventure.

Having A Passion

“You can’t teach people passion.  You can turn it ON, but you can’t teach it.”--Rudolf Nureyev, Professional Ballet Dancer
b. March 17, 1983 d. January 6, 1993

April 2, 1989Leigh’s Birthday was on March 29th.   She is now a one year old.   Now it was Holly’s turn.   John and Sherri arranged a small party at their house.   Mom had fun after two sips of the Margarita on the rocks that John made for her.

Holly seemed thrilled by her Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls.   I think she was a tad more thrilled by her new wheels.

“Maybe Holly will go on longevity bike rides with me when she’s older,” I announced.
I was happy that mom’s mom (my grandmother: Mary Genevieve Leyba-Lucero) came to the party.   She is always a bundle of positive energy.

I sent a box of SEE’s Candy to my 4th and 5th Graders at REDDING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL in San Francisco that I won’t be able to see anymore.   I encouraged them to send me postcards and keep in touch.   Let’s see if I hear from any of them.   Most importantly, I do hope I reached them in my teachings about having a passion for what you do, especially from the act of writing.

On April 6, 1989 I received a card from the student’s teacher, Patricia Ann Crowley.   She wrote in her professional typewritten manner:Dear Michael,
I am sorry that I missed your visit to REDDING ELEMENTARY last week.   I thought you might come by to say “good-bye” to us.
I have tried to call on several occasions but I must be selecting the wrong time.
I have been busy writing a team ARTS Grant with the Teachers at REDDING, plus attending various workshops.   I would like to be in touch with you, so that we might get-together for lunch some afternoon, if that’s possible for you.
Would it be possible for you to call me at school some morning or lunch time?   I’m usually at school at 8:10AM.   Class begins at 8:30AM.   Lunch time I’m free to talk to you Mon-Thurs from 12:20PM to 1:45PM.
I do want to THANK YOU for you well-prepared lessons and interest in working in a public school classroom.   The children enjoyed your presentations.   WE are in the process of transferring the ads you’d begun with them to tag board for display purposes.   They are turning out well.
We didn’t have a class this week because of Public Schools Week, but we will have it next week.   Best of luck in your new program…
Pat

That was sweet of her.   I quickly replied back to Pat Crowley.   It’s a matter of time before we can actually meet-up again.   She seems like the type that will try to keep in touch though.  We shall see.A few days later I was also happy to receive a personal note from one of the students (namely Deana Vi).   Deana wrote in her own handwriting:

Dear Mr. Armijo,Our class misses you a lot.   We learned a lot from you.   Do you like your new job?   And thanks for the candies.  Maybe sometimes you can come and visit our class.   Inside the envelope there’s a picture of me.   If you don’t mind would you send me a picture of you?   THANK YOU.

Your Pal,
Deanna Vi

Of course, I had to comply.   I wrote back to Deanna.   I was quite touched that she took the time to write such a dear, pleasant note.“If you wanted…you could pick your own secret missions as I do.”
