Coffin Hop 2012 with Mark Scioneaux

On Hollow Shell and why the Zombie Genre is Coming Back from the Dead

By: Mark C. Scioneaux

I cannot speak for all horror writers, but I think the first subject an aspiring writer tries to tackle is the zombie novel. There are a few reasons why the zombies are the popular choice, but mostly I believe it is due to the simplicity of the subject, and the way the story develops.

First, you have undead monsters. Scary, right? There is nothing more horrifying and heartbreaking than the thought of your...

Terror, my Friend

A little dark poetry for Halloween…

Terror, My Friend

Terror,

I know you-

He does not,

You sweet thing,

Saucy delicacy,

Salivating at your sight

Evil lessons, twisted tales:

All taught with lust

Gory incisions parting soft skin

-please come in!

Lifting strands pulled tight

Behind his neck in delight

Feel the strain

Love your pain

Terror,

See the cold blue

Does he understand yet?

Evil lessons, twisted tales:

He must be aware

Ignite the stick

Bind his limbs

Melt the casing

Brown, black, bubble

Smell his shell

Bones do b...

Support America’s Next Author

I am happy to report that one of my short stories “My Friend, the Dark” is in the America’s Next Author competition! Please stop by and help out by voting! Also, if you do reviews…if you do four or more reviews, YOU have a shot at winning an Ipad from them!

My Friend, the Dark:

Lukas had a deeply rooted fear of the dark. A fear that beckons to him and seeps into his reality, forcing him to confront his anxieties. When he embraces the dark, the affection becomes mutual.

#FlashFriday The Band Marched Through

The marching band streamed down the hill in perfect lines. As they approached the grandstand, the drum major cued the players. The drums, trumpets, clarinets, and all the other instruments those high schoolers held proudly in their hands, burst into song. But it wasn’t an upbeat version of some popular pop hit or even an inspirational patriotic piece: They began playing the dark bars of a requiem.

My son was somewhere in that formation with his saxophone. It was always hard for me to pick him...

Friday Fright: The Voice Beckons

Stacie had lived with voices inside her head for her whole life and it was exhausting. A shrill, echoing voice that didn’t command her to hurt herself, or even to kill her friends as one might assume is the nature of auditory hallucinations. This eerie murmur deep inside her core beckoned to be found, begging Stacie to rescue her, to save her.

When she was a child and quite a literal person still, she searched for this imaginary person high and low. Instead of being afraid of closets and dark...
