Published by The Wild Rose Press

My next train rolled up, and the doors opened and spewed out bundled passengers. I stepped into its warmth. No visions, but I could feel so much despair and loneliness around me. Just what I need; an emotional barometer of humanity. But at least no one had brought a source of evil with them that I could detect. This time I was able to sit forward-facing, which made it easier to stare into the mingled reflection and blackness of the window.

My mind took me back to the worst day of my life. I was only eight years old. The stiff dress Mama made me wear for services itched something fierce. I couldn’t wait to get it off me, but we hadn’t even gone to church yet, so it would be forever before that happened.

Pa was next door at the church going over his sermon. Mama and I ate breakfast together. She made pancakes, my favorite, but I picked at my food. She asked me what was wrong.

“I’m worried about Pa.”

“Why, dear?”

“I think something’s gonna try and hurt him.”

“Why?”

“He has a dark place, and it’s getting worse.”
Mama pursed her lips and shook her head. “Just pray for him.”
“I do, every day. But Mama, I get my signs when he’s around.”
“He’s a preacher. The Lord looks after his own. It’s in God’s hands, not yours.”

Her sharp voice cut my spirit. Mama kept telling me to sit still and eat my breakfast. She yelled at me for wasting food when so many folks went hungry.

I ran to the church and listened to Pa finish practice-preaching his sermon. My palms hurt. The black funnel over his heart had drawn the biggest, nastiest-looking demon I had ever seen. It was fiery red beneath with black scales and eyes like smoldering embers and a tail full of stingers. The demon had hold of him but good. I had never been so scared.

I prayed for God to help me help my Pa.

When he finished, I ran up to the pulpit. The demon glared at me. Swished its barbed tail. A nest of pulsing pale green eggs rested in the bottom of the lectern. Did Pa see them? Or the demon?

I couldn’t let it alone. I was so worried. Whenever I mentioned the blackness I saw around his heart, he got so mad he belted me. If I could just help him get free of the evil, he’d be all right, wouldn’t he? I had to try.

Pa patted me on the head. “My sermon should put the fear of God into them.”

I tugged his hand. “Pa, please, may I speak with you?” What if the demon crawled clear inside him and took over? It shook its barbed tail at me and hissed. I bit back a scream.

Pa gave me a wary look. “Folks will be coming in any minute. Make it quick.”

My heart pounded so hard I thought anyone could see a lump every time it beat. I opened my mouth, but no words came out the first time. Finally, I pointed and squeaked, “Father, a demon is trying to hurt you. Please let me pray with you.”

Pa’s eyes blazed like the devil himself looking out at me. Shaking from head to toe, I brought my hands together, fingers pointing downward, charging them with power to send that demon on home. My golden bubble surrounded me, shining bright, protecting me.

Pa pointed a shaking finger at me. “Impudent child, how dare you enter a house of God and speak such evil!” The nasty creature inside him growled. Waved its tail like a mad cat. Pa raged. People started coming into church for services. Everything blurred together.

Stunned faces. The demon. Pa’s flaming eyes. Yelling. Screams.
Mama ran into the church and called my name.

Pa pointed at me and proclaimed, “This child has prayed with many of you under the guise of easing your suffering, but she has mislead us all. We cannot allow such evil among us.”

He threw a Bible at my head. I dropped to the floor to avoid being hit. It wished past my hair and thudded into the pew behind me. I jumped to my feet, quaking head to toe.

More screams. One of them Mama’s.

Pa’s pronouncement shook me so hard my teeth clacked together. I tried to speak, but no words would come out of my mouth. I didn’t think anyone else could see the demon that had hold of him—the power of darkness he himself had invited. I looked at the horrified faces all around, some shaking their heads, some crying. None of them dared defy the preacher. Nobody came to help me, not even Mama.

Pa wrapped his hands around my throat, lifted me way off the ground and addressed his flock. “This demon-possessed child has no place in our church.” He looked straight into my eyes and decreed my doom. “You have forever fallen from grace. God cannot love one such as you. Now be gone! Let me never see your face again.”

He threw me to the ground. I clambered to my feet, turned to look at him in shock. Nobody spoke. My tears blurred the stunned faces of those who had been, until now, my church family.

Mama’s “No!” and her gasp echoed around the church.

I wanted to protest, but I could barely breathe, much less speak. Only a feeble squeak came out of my mouth. Why would nobody come help me? They all stood frozen.

I ran toward Mama. Surely she could talk sense into Pa, fix this horrible mess. She clutched at her chest and fell to the floor. I dropped at her side, calling to her, but she could not answer. Her face went white as snow. I yelled for someone to get help. As if glued in place, they stayed put. Not a single soul moved to help her.

Pa picked me up by my neck and tossed me toward the door. “I said be GONE, child of Satan!” The demon had hold of him clear to his soul.
The door flew open. For a terrifying moment I thought his fiend had done it, but two policemen ran into the church. I darted between them and fled into the morning.

No one followed. My world shattered, I ran all the way to the lake, about two miles. Silent tears poured down my face to join its waters. Waves lapped around my ankles, embracing me. My parents, my church and God abandoned me all at once, even though all I did was try to help.
The train lurched, pulling me back into my current surroundings. I shook my head to clear it and swiped away tears. I wished I could emerge from terror’s dark grip. I trembled but not from cold.

“By the tracks, with a trash bag on his head.”

Going on a RAMPAGE of Appreciation

I'm going on a rampage...and I want YOU to come along for the ride!

I am blessed to count some truly awesome people amongst my friends. Dr. Rick created a phenomenal program some years back. I had the opportunity to experience it, and he invited me to contribute to his book.

Why does this matter to you? As I breathed through my morning manifestation meditation, I became inspired to share this personal story, which appears in Chapter 2, with YOU.

Dr. Schaefer’s “Rampage of Appreciation” begins when you appreciate even the tiniest good thing in your life, then keep appreciating whatever comes to mind next, and next, and next. The euphoria from experiencing this level of appreciation energizes me like nothing else.

Cover of Extreme Thought Makeover by Dr. Rich Schaefer a Rampage … of Appreciation!

By Ronda Del Boccio, The Story Lady

For Extreme Thought Makeover by Dr. Rick Schaefer

Of all the life-changing activities that are part of Extreme Thought Makeover, my favorite has always been the Rampage of Appreciation. I wake up appreciating my life each day, and I go on a rampage of appreciation when I’m feeling stressed or in an “off” mood.

One day I was feeling frustrated because expected payment for a completed project had not yet arrived in my mailbox, and I was feeling the pinch. I could feel myself falling into an uncharacteristic place of “lack thinking.” So, I went on a rampage. I live from a space of abundant joy and refuse to stay in a lesser state, thus I began to appreciate things like this:

I love my little house in the woods. It’s mine. I am truly fortunate and blessed to have a home. And wow, that coffee tasted especially good this morning. I sure enjoyed standing outside with my coffee as I watched the chickens run around looking for tasty morsels on the ground.

And I love the feel of my cat’s fur, the way she rubs her head into my hand, essentially petting herself. And she writhes in ecstasy as I scritch along her side. And her wonderful purr motor is so loud. I can’t help but relax in the presence of a purring cat!

I get to work from home instead of rushing around and spending hours just getting to and from a workplace. I get to talk to people all over the world and assist them in living their mission. And I get to write. Life doesn’t get much better than this!

The eggs my chickens lay are a daily miracle to me. Every single day when I gather the eggs, I marvel at these delightful gems, each a different shade of brown, and filled with golden goodness. How amazing that I get such fresh eggs and never have to eat the “old stale ones” from the stores. I am truly blessed.

Then I looked at the patio tomato plant and noticed that three tomatoes were beginning to blush – not in embarrassment but in impending ripeness. It won’t be long before those tasty tomatoes are in a delicious salad. I love cooking and adding a blessing into everything I prepare. I also love it when someone else appreciates what I prepare.

I appreciate my body that does so many tasks without me having to manage them. What a miracle that my heart b eats, food digests, and my hair grows without my active involvement. Life is positively miraculous! I’ve been working out more lately and am noticing increased strength and vitality, which motivates me to continue.

And even though it drives me nuts at times, I am truly grateful for the computer. It allows me to connect with people all over the world. It allows me to write my books and stories efficiently. It lets me do research so much more easily than I did back in the days of microfiche and card catalogs.

This is a much better time to be mostly blind, because there are adaptive aids and computer programs to help me hear the screen. Oh, and audio books... I LOVE audios. I am SO incredibly grateful for sound recording.

I have so many options open to me in this time and place with the technologies and freedoms available to me. I can think, speak, vote, talk to whomever I wish and steer the course of my own life. I am focused. I am determined. I live to serve. And I am free!

Now there is no room for anything but abundant joy and appreciation.

Flash Fiction Story: The New Girl | Friday Fictioneers, 30 Nov., 2018

I've been working on a novel this month, yet I've loved writing these short stories. This is another one from the world of Kassidy Spence from the Reluctant Demon Hunter story.

Russ retracted it.

“Well, ‘the girl’ is handy in the kitchen. She’s fixin’ supper. You’ll meet her soon enough.” He pointed to an array of tools on an oil cloth. “Hand me that there filter, then go get me the red oil can from the shelf, will ye?”

“Yessir.”

Word count: 100.

“You can do this, Aunt Beck.”

She slashed a tear from her eye.

I squeezed her knee. “I know.”

“Kass, I can’t do this.” She clutched the door handle.

“Stay with me.”

“I’ll stay here.”

“Half the town’s gone.” Stubborn woman. You raised me. Least I can do.” She’d lost so much. A baby, the farm. Walt. Now this.

“But you’re starting over too.”

I fingered Randy’s dog tags on the chain. “We’ll phoenix together. Let’s do this.”

We passed the charred gate on the way to the gutted house.

Amid stones and rubble, a cluster of yellow wildflowers gleamed.

Flash Fiction: The Bones of My Vision | Friday Fictioneers 9 Nov., 2018

And here is my story.

The Bones of My Vision

92 words

By Ronda Del Boccio (c) 2018

I sat in my circle of salty tears, seeking a vision on a moon-dark night.

“What’s next?”

I paced the circle for warmth and wisdom.

“Yup, I’ve been going in circles. I ’m done.”

I leaned against the tree.  Lumps poked me.  My frigid fingers explored. Thick shafts with knobs and a dome with holes.

Bones?

No. Skill, not sick preservation. Stone, not bone.

Yet, bones that shape and structure.

I smiled. “Back to the roots of who I am. Thank you.”

I discharged my circle as first light broke the night.

Excerpt of Hypnotic Deceptio: NaNoWriMo 2018 WIP | Paranormal/Urban Fantasy

Here is an excerpt from my work in progress (WIP) Hypnotic Deception: Reluctant Demon Hunter Series #2.

Kassidy Spence continues to struggle with her unwanted gift of demon huntng and her feelings about moving on after the death of her war hero husband.

When the black FBI-issue car pulled up in front of the converted Victorian mansion Julie and I called home, I mustered the good manners to thank him for bringing me home.

“Do you two rent this whole house?”

He speaks. “Oh no, someone converted the old mansion into five apartments.” I pointed to the third floor. “We live in the littlest one up top. It used to be the servant quarters.” I grabbed his arm before he started up the front steps. “When we get up there, please wait outside our apartment.”

“I have to accompany you.”

I bit back a retort and explained, “Just for a minute, so I can make sure Julie isn’t walking around in her birthday suit, okay?”

He raised an eyebrow.

“It’s not as if she’ll expect me to come in with an FBI agent, after all.”

He nodded and huffed out a breath.

“Then I’ll let you in. Might even give you a cup of coffee if you ask nicely.”

He pulled away from me. “That’s not how we do things.”

I blocked the door with my body, the key tucked between my fingers. “We’re two women living alone, and it’s our home, and it’s how we do things. You’ll have plenty of time to bug the place and snoop around while I’m showering and getting dressed.”

“I’m not bugging your apartment.”

“Just bugging me, then?”

His jaw dropped. I reached into my jacket pocket and came up with a little thing that looked like a bead.

Russ opened his mouth, but no words came out.

I pushed it into his hand and unlocked the door.. “I’ll let you in in a minute.” I slipped inside, locked and bolted us girls inside.

Julie was just crawling out of bed, which at seven thirty was unusual.

“Kass, are you really all right?”

“I’m fine. I came home to shower and change. Russ gave me a lift.

A fist-pump. “Good goin’, girl.”

I could feel my face flush hot.  Considering I had dinner with him at the Bentley’s a couple days ago, I guess I could understand.

“Jules, if I’d been off having a fling, I wouldn’t have kept you worrying.”

She grabbed my hand. “You gotta tel me.”

“Later. He’s standing outside our door. I’ll let him come sit in the living room, so don’t run around naked.”

Julie flashed a truly wicked grin. “Maybe I want him to see me without my clothes.”

“Naughty girl. You’re a mess.” I buried my face in my hands.

She laughed. “You’re so prim and proper. I won’t parade around nude. Don’t worry. Just let him in.”

I opened the door and invited Russ in. His gaze swept around the small space, which had a kitchen, two postage-stamp sized bedrooms, and a comparatively largish living room/office area with a desk, love seat, and TV stand.

Julie called out way too loudly from her bedroom, “Did you score with Hot Stuff?”

My face burned. I wanted to crawl inside a hole and pull it in after me. “Julie, he’s here in the apartment now, and he heard you, but no, we did not…” I couldn’t even finish the sentence with anything other than embarrassed grunts. I covered my face with my hands for the second time today, and it wasn’t even eight o’clock.

“Ooh. Fill me in later. And thanks for finally texting me so I know you didn’t get raped or something.”

“You sound way too awake. I’m going to make coffee. If you shower quickly, I can get clean before the hot water runs out.”

She called out, “Hey Hot Stuff, I’ll come say hello in a few.”

I dashed to the closed door of her room. “Julie, he’s not a slab of meat, for goodness sake.  His name’s Russell.” Kill me now. Please, somebody, kill me right now.

“I keep telling you, you’re too prim and proper.”

“No, remember I am…was a married woman already, but I have a keen sense of decorum.”
