Surprises by Firelight | Flash Fiction for Friday Fictioneers 8 February 2019

This week's photo prompt of a crackling fire made me think of Kassidy and Randy from They All Died Smiling. Not sure why, but it caused me to create a scene that happened before the book.

If  you haven't read this paranormal/urban fantasy novel, Kass is the heroine. Aunt Beck and Randy are mentioned but never appear. He is her husband who dies in Afghanistan.

Anyone is welcome to play! I hope you will.

Word count: 100

Genre Mainstream story but a paranomal series

The fire crackled and popped.

“You two should just live here after the wedding,” Aunt Beck announced.

“i thought you were thinking of selling.”

“I was. Without most of the boys here, it’s big. But if y’all stay, I won’t have to move.”

“Before you decide things,” Randy said, “I have news.”

“Good or bad?” I asked.

“Yes.” He clutched both my hands in his.

“What is it?”

“We need to move up the wedding.”

“When are they deploying you?”

“In two weeks.”

My breath caught and guts lurched.

“Kass, I need you to be my wife before, in case…”

“I owe you big time, Kass.”

Robert’s deep voice makes me melt a little inside. “No problem. They’re almost done.” I watch as the professional movers cushion and pack his expensive creations. “I’m just glad you didn’t ask me to pack your pots. I’d be terrified to break one.”

“How’s Mischief?”

“Wrapped around my neck, purring.”

He chuckles. “She’d be fluffed and hissing without you there.”

“You excited for Powwow?”

“Yeah. Ever been?”

“I wish.”

“Wanna come?”

“Um… now?”

“I could use your help at my booth.”

My brain reels.

“I’ll pay. Besides, we have a lot to talk about.”

Wool Gathering | Weekend Writing Prompt #92 from Sammi Cox

The weekend writing prompt is a different short word count each week. This one took me back to a playground incident after which I never heard the bell ring. I suddenly realized I was the last child on the playground.

Wool Gathering | Weekend Writing Prompt #92

By Ronda Del Boccio

36 words

Mrs. Parker wouldn’t let me stay in and read. I trudged onto the playground for my least favorite, recess.

Watching my sneakers, I walked the edge.

In real life, I whirl around and become Wonder Woman.

Kindred Spirits S3 E1 at the Oddfellows Home in Liberty, Missouri, No Salvation: Creepers, Thought Forms, and Stuck Spirits

I love Kindred Spirits, now on Travel Channel.Amy Bruni and Adam Berry are not just out to investigate and have experiences. They're called in to actually HELP, which they do. New episodes air Thursdays at 10 PM ET, ad are available on hte app.

The Episode

Season 3, Episode 1

No Salvation

Amy Bruni and Adam Berry are called to Liberty, MO, to investigate the Odd Fellows Home, a massive compound that once cared for orphans and the elderly. More than 10,000 people died on the property. Now their pain has fostered a malevolent entity.

A Teensy Bit about Me

As a psychic knower, medium and empath, I'm flooded with extra perceptions most of the time. As I watch shows like this, I see/hear/feel what the team encounters and get a huge amount of data without equipment.

Please know that I have huge respect for Amy Bruni and Adam Berry. Everyone's powers work differently. Even if I should have a differing perception, nothing I share should be misconstrued as criticism. I merely share what I know with my knower.

A Warning from Me AND Adam Berry
This place has long been considered haunted, and numerous paranormal investigation teams have investigated. When you stir up stuff, the spirits respond, and even if the activity started out harmless or mostly harmless,, the investigations can attract negatives.

Adam said this very thing during the episode.

Consider yourself warned. I say don't investigate if you're not able to help OR bringing/getting someone who can help fix things.

The Investigation Begins

Adam and Amy first encountered a child that spoke audibly (sans equipment to them. There were 2 other spirits I sensed as well, one benign and one malevolent. Soon, they met a dead old man named George. I heard him say so, but they did not. It happens. Everyone's talents work differently. Someone on Twitter got the same info: He walked with a cane and stayed to try to protect the children and others from a nasty entity.

Macabre_Kitty (Sara)‏ @Macabre_Kitty Jan 24

More

Replying to @TheStoryLady @The_Kindreds @amybruni

It is absolutely George. Got the same name

One man committed suicide, but George is not that man. George said "Find Fred. Talk to Fred." This was evident to me as a medium who can work remotely, but not to them or their equipment.

The team and I saw ghostly figures in the hall. They found Fred's room, spoke to him and I felt him move along.

They soon heard angry voices in a nearby room.  One said, "Get out!" One cussed. My knowing said it was a dual call, 1 in anger, and the oer from helpful spirits warning them of the negative entity nearby.

"Get Out" Can Mean 1 of 2 things

When a spirit says "get out," sometimes it's menacing warning, like get out or I'll hurt you, but other times, it's a cautionary warning, as in get out to escape harm. I experienced George and a couple others trying to urge them to back away. In another spot, they audibly heard a child warning them to leave.

"There's Something Crawling on the Ceiling!" - Amy Bruni

I know what those are. I've met them before. I always called them "Creepers" as a kid, because they creep along walls, ceilings, floors, trees...wherever they want. Imagine a 6-legged bug-like creature that drags its oblongish body along and feeds on fear and negativity, and you have a creeper.

I should try drawing one, though I'm not that kind of artist.

Validation!

The team used an SLS camera, which can catch the more esoteric energies on film, and for the first time in the history of EVER, I saw a regular-eyes visual representation of what I've always been able to see with my Magic Eyes! It gave me a thrill, I can tell you!

I have vanquished them, but I'm not going into that here.

The Team Brings in Reinforcements

They brought in help, including medium Chip Coffey. He correctly identified the source of the bad stuff as "low level demonic." He said he's had  nightmares about the creepers - about things crawling around the ceiling etc.

Resolution

Psychic medium Chip Coffey identified the entity as an "egregore," which is a thoughtform. The team had all the family members and employees surround the building and inject it with their most positive memories to dispel the entities.

I hope you enjoyed this week's episode and my musings. Before you go ...

How Do I Publish My Book?

One question I've gotten several times is...

"How do I publish my book?"

That's a big question.

There is a simple answer...kinda...but not really.

I can't say, "Ya just add flour, sugar, and butter, mix and bake for 10 minutes."

Here's how you sort out the answer to that BIG question.

What Are My Publishing Options?

Traditional/big house publishing (means getting an agent)
Small press pblishing
Self/independent publishing

I've done all 3, and that's another story for another day.

They All Died Smiling Front Cover

Good News and Bad News

The good news: Publishing a book is so EASY that literally anyone  with a pulse and computer access can do it for free! Just go to Kindle Direct Publishing. Boom, you're published! Most of you will decide that answers your question and go away. Except ...

The bad news:  Publishing a book is so easy that anyone can do it, and most self published books are utter CRAP, like the one I tred reading that switches between present and past tense several times on the first page!

Here are 3 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You  Make Publishing Decisions

Why am I writing this book? AKA, What is my goal with the book?
What do I expect from this book?
How much time, money, and/or energy am I willing/able to invest?

"Why am I writing this book?

If you answer: To get a story out of me. or share my family's stories.

If this is what you ant, you may not need to publish at all, because just writing the story is enough. You can always have a few copies bound at an office store. This isn't something you are wanting to share with the world.

If you answer, "I'd like to publish my book and print some copies to sell to family/friends/clubs/etc."

Great, You can use KDP.

If you answer, "I wanna sell a million books or have my book made into a movie" ...

It happens, but not often. Everyone can now publish a book. Most shouldn't, or they need extreme help first. Expect to put in a lot of sweat equity and actual money for this to happen.

What do I Expect from this book?

If you just expect to get that story out of you and maybe make a few (your currency)s, that's fine.

Also fine if you have big dreams, but big dreams mean big investments of time, sweat, tears, and money.  Which leads us to

How much time, money, and energyam I willing/able to invest?

Investments are time, money, and energy. Everything can be boiled down to those 3 ways of contributing.

If you expect to make any money at all, know some cold, hard facts.

Most books only sell 10 or less copies.
3% sell 100 copies or more.
1/10 of 1 % sell over a million.
I'm just sayin...it's a rough business if you really have big expectations.

If this is your big dream, expect to go full-out. Join a critique group, learn about the craft of writing. Strive too improve. Attend writers conferences.

Could you be the next sensation? Absolutely. BUt it takes more than wishing.

My friend Andy LoRusso, the Singing Chef, is one of the few who has done just that.

Andy-LoRusso The Singing Chef on stage

What's your next queston? Let me know in the comments, and I'll answer in a future post!

Flash Fiction: Excerpt from They All Died Smiling | Friday Fictioneers 25 January 2019

This is a flash fiction story for the Friday Fictioneers writing challenge that author Rochelle Wisoff-Fields hosts each week. Anyone can play, including you! You get a photo prompt ad write whatever that image calls to your mind.

For me, this week's image made me think of my paranormal/urban fantasy novel They  All Died Smiling, available online, in libraries, and in bookstores everywhere.

While researching instances of people who died violently with smiles on their faces, reluctant demon hunter and busybody Kassidy Spence comes across this news story in the Stone County Gazette. (And yeah, it's fake news from a  novel, not a real news story, ids.)Kassidy

Jessica Lambert, 28, of Tallahassee, Florida, died Tuesday when her car went over a steep embankment on Highway 13 in Lampe. Lambert was not wearing a seat belt. The Coroner’s report stated she was not intoxicated or high.

“Could be a deer hit the car and it went over, but we just don’t know at this point,” admitted Sheriff Blair.

Dick Foote of Kimberling City discovered her dead at the scene said, “She was smiling like this was the happiest day of her life. It spooked me.”

The Coroner’s Office and Sherriff’s Department have found no evidence of foul play.

Pen poised in my trembling hand, I read the contract, trying to make sense of the words, of their implication.

Is this what I want?

They say when one door closes, another opens. Well, Randy’s death shattered my door, then my terrible demon hunting “gift” took a good, hard crack at the cobbled shards. Still, I am not broken.

If I do this, there’s no going back.

The HR woman points at my index finger which, I discover, rests on the salary. “Plus full benefits.”

Only now do my senses register words on a page.

The door opens. “Hey, partner.”

I clang the bell. Tired workers come for supper.

Rocky pulls my braid.

“Wash,” Aunt Beck commands. “All furrowed?”

Uncle Walt mops his brow.

I pile and pass the biscuits.

“Yours are as good as mine now, Kass.”

I smile.
