flash Fiction: Beck’s Christmas Gift for Friday Fictioneers 11 January 2019

Welcome! Here's another tale told in 100 words.

flash fiction short story graphic showing lighning strikingAnyone is welcome to participate in the Friday Fictioneers weekly flash fiction writing challenge. You don't have to consider yourself a writer or be published. Just tell a 100-word story in any genre that relates to the photo prompt. I find participating in this exercise helps me be a better writer.

Heartfelt thanks to the amazing and talented Rochelle Wisoff-Fields for running this weekly game.

Beck's Christmas Gift
By Ronda Del Boccio

For Friday Fictioneers, 11 January 2019

Word count: 100

Genre Mainstream story set in the world of Reluctant Demon Hunter Kassidy as a child.

Author’s note: In my paranormal/urban fantasy novel They All Died Smiling, Kassidy talks about her aunt and uncle raising her after her possessed father kicked her out when hse was eight. That happened in summer. This is her first holiday season with her new family: Aunt Beck, Uncle Walt, and their four boys.

They All Died Smiling Front Cover

The book is available everywhere online, or at your local bookstore or library If your favorite store or library don't have it on the shelves, just ask for it by name and they'll get it for  you.

“C’mon, y’all, parade time.”

Walt takes my hand. “All our boys. Where’s the bonus child?”

David tries to act like he isn’t excited, but he’s grinnin’ like a fool.

Kass calls for help with her braid.

“C’mon, sis, it’s just hair,” JJ calls.

I fix her braid. Rocky yanks it. She unzips his coat and glares him down.

Walt grins. “That’s our girl.”

“She’ll be ours by Christmas.” I always wanted a girl. Never thought I’d get one this way. That miserable preacher didn’t deserve her anyway.

Kass grabs the bag of candy to throw and skips out the door.

Hawk Spirals

By Ronda Del Boccio

For Friday Fictioneers, 4 January 2019

Word count: 100

Genre:  Mystical

Big sky welcomes me, inviting me to play. Thermals call to me.  I take wing and sing.

Glorious sun warms cold mountain stone. I rise to catch and ride those glorious thermals. They carry me on steady wings. I sing my joy into the morning.

My mate soars over the ridge. Sun’s radiance amplifies her beauty. Wind ruffles her feathers. She catches my eye, dives.

I chase. I nearly grasp her. She banks and bursts upward. I climb to meet her. We enjoy this game often.

We spiral closer and closer together until our paths unite. We sing our love.

What you'll hear from me on this episode of Paranormal Punchers Podcast:

A story about the guardian spirit dead who was afraid I'd force her to cross. (She threw a clock at me.)
A redneck ded walked up to me at a gas station...
What it's like to cross a large amount of dead at once.
Of pudding skin, the veil between the worlds, and the path between.
How to protect yourself during a paranormal investigation or encounter

...and more!

Time to Goat
by Ronda Del Boccio

Genre: Paranormal/Urban Fantasy

Word count: 100

NOTE: This story borrows Aunt Beck and Kassidy from They All Died Smiling. You can read more stories featuring them and other characters from the series in the Friday Fictioneers category and elsewhere on this site.

Why am I in a cemetery?

Two women stand near a grave.   The younger taps the older and points at me. “Aunt Beck, you really need to see this.”

Beck looks. Her eyes widen. “A dead guy in a goat?”

“Can you cross him?”

“Dunno.” Beck squats down, irritating me.

Don’t patronize me. I’m not a child.

“Do you know your name?”

I stomp. Weird. “I’m Ha-a-a-a-arrrrr-o-o-old, and I am no-o-o-o-ot de-e-e-e-ead.”

“You most certainly are.”

I fight an urge to chew. Urge wins.

“Not a demon, right, Kass?”

“No.”

“Come out of the goat. It’s time to move on.”

Kassidy stifled a yawn.

Aunt Beck scrutinized her. “You look plum wore out.”

“I’ve tussled with…” she counted on her fingers, gave up. “a passel of demons in less than a week.”

“We still need to have that talk.”

“Yeah, I know. After supper’s cleared, promise.”

Beck nodded.  “I can go by myself. You don’t need to come.”

The front door creaked open. Footsteps approached.

“I need a plain ol’ activity. Besides, David’s here. He’ll want toffee squares.”

David’s voice boomed from the living room. “Toffee squares?”

“Boots,” called Beck.

“Porch, Ma.”

Kass smiled. “Some things never change.”

3 Simple Ways to Stay Merry and Survive the Holidays

No matter what holidays you celebrate during the festive season, chances are you're dealing with 1 or more of the following:

More people than usual
More events than usual
More entertaining than usual
More calories than usual
More stress than usual

Here are 3 simple ways to keep stress at bay so you can stay merry and full of cheer, even when the relatives you love better frin a distance come calling

Breathe from your belly

When you're stressed, the first thing that typically happens is you start stress-breathing. Your shoulders become earrings, and you feel the pinch.

Aunt Bessie comes in with that slobbery smooch that drives you NUTS every single year, Uncle Joe starts in on politics at dinner, or the kids play like a band of hooligans, and you can feel your guts clench.

The simple answer is to breathe slowly and deeply. Practice while  you're calm and remind yourself to let your belly rise and fall in nourishing, comfortable waves, even when life gets crazy.

Try it:  Breathe in for 4 counts and out for 6 or 8. Remind yourself to breathe this way when the going gets tough. You'll feel so much more calm and hopeful.

Sing!

Nothing lifts your spirits like singing! it's not about perfection or being Beyoncé. Chef Andy LoRusso, the Singing Chef, has been teaching people to sing while cooking for years. It do it all the time. It's fun.

Try it: Whether it's in the shower, while making cookies, or to distract yourself from family drama, just turn up the tunes and start singing.

Count Your Blessings

Even when there's drama, hte roast is too dry, and the rels are dancing on your last nerve, you have much for which to be grateful.  Think of 5 great things in your life, one for each finger on 1 hand, and see if that starts you on a "Rampage of Appreciation" that shifts everything for you.

Try it: It's easier to deeply experience gratitude when you make this a daily practice.

“Trying to, you mean.”

“Hey!”

“Like the coasters we did in third grade, with the little ceramic tiles?

JJ lowered his gaze.

“Why?” Dave gripped JJ’s shoulders. “Crafts…you?”
