Anatomy of a Book Launch

I feel very honored to be a guest blogger for one of my favorite writers, Lisa Fox. Lisa was kind enough to offer an opening to me on her blog and extremely generous in her approach.

As she has given me free reign for both topic and format, I would like to show my appreciation to readers by giving away two copies of my book, Fall into Winter, a book of four erotic novellas. To be eligible, make a comment here on Lisa's blog for this post. Two winners will be chosen at random by the end of business day, Feb. 14th, and it will be my pleasure to send a signed copy of my book to the winners. Good luck!

Now, to the topic at hand…a book launch. Mine is happening tomorrow—my first one—for my first book. I'm having it at my favorite new bookstore in Toronto, where I live. Ben McNally Books does not even carry a romance section, let alone an erotica one. I must have had balls of steel on the day I approached the owner about hosting a book launch for me, and I couldn't have been more shocked when he agreed to it. His attitude reflected his magnanimous spirit to support a local writer, get some traffic for his store, and have some fun doing it. That process started a little over a month ago, and now it's happening.  I'm excited, scared, and still in a state of shock some days. It's been a time of firsts, and I've stumbled and tripped along the road to get to this point. Given that, I thought to share some of the things I've learned in planning my launch. Hopefully, it will help other writers when they decide to do theirs.

My Tips for a Book Launch

Pre-launch buzz: Let everyone know about your event. Create the buzz as soon as possible.

Location: Don't be afraid to approach a bookstore or other venue to host your launch. It should be free or inexpensive. It's good exposure for their business too, not just for you.

Date: Have your launch date relate to the nature of your book, if possible. I'm doing mine just before Valentine's Day, which is perfect for erotica/romance.

Time: A PR friend taught me that timing is crucial. Plan it so you can have both media and friends and family attend.

Promotional material: Get bookmarks printed up, and have them available at the launch. This is the business card of the writer, and should have details of your book, and how to reach you.

Get sponsors: I cannot stress this point enough! You don't need to, nor should you break the bank hosting your launch. In exchange for catering and sexy products I received from vendors, I will promote them in my blog, and have their advertising displayed at my launch. I will also personally acknowledge them at my launch because it's important to promote those who go out of their way to promote you.

Food and Drink: Have some finger food and drinks (get this sponsored if possible). If you are providing alcohol in a non-alcohol venue, ensure you get the proper permits.

Invitations: Send out invitations to everyone you know. Announce it through your social network, blog, and website. Create a Facebook Event and invite all your friends, even those you suspect will not be able to make it. It's important to include everyone as they will help you spread the news by word of mouth. It also gives them the opportunity to offer you their good wishes even if they cannot attend. Request an RSVP to give you an idea of how many people will show up. (This helps you plan how much food and drink you will need too).

Invite media: Prepare a news release to mark the event and forward it to your local newspapers, radio stations, and TV stations. Also send personal invitations to any media people you know.

Plan out the Event: Decide if you want both a book reading and signing, or just a signing. If you have both, make sure the book reading is brief, or at least jazz it up to make it exciting. No one likes to be read to for fifteen minutes, no matter how arousing the material is.

Register your Guests: Have a sign-in book for all guests who attend your launch. Collect names, e-mails, and addresses. Tell them they will be the first to know about your next book release, contests, and giveaways.

Free Stuff: Have giveaways to make it fun and build buzz around your book. The prizes can be something very simple along with a copy of your book.

Take pictures: Have a few designated photographers take pictures with you and your guests while the party is going on. The pictures will be great as promotional material on your website and blog. Do inform guests their pictures may be posted online, and give them the opportunity to opt out if they prefer not to have it.

Sell your book: Ensure you have copies of your book on hand for sale at the launch.

Practice your signature: Have several pens that you are comfortable with, and practice what you want to write.

Show gratitude: This may be the last item on my list, but it's the most important. Provide a gift to all who attend. This can be just a small token of appreciation such as chocolates/candies to thank guests for attending. It's important they leave your launch feeling happy they took time out of their busy days for you.

I think that's it! Since my launch hasn't happened yet, I did not title this list "My Tips for a Successful Book Launch." Of course, I hope it will be.

I'm a firm believer that if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. I'm not sure who coined that phrase, but it's a mantra I follow if I'm serious about what I'm doing. I'll keep you posted on my blog as to how everything went.

I'm looking forward to any comments you may have, and to sending out a couple of free copies of my book.

Lisa, thanks again for being such a gracious host. It was great fun!

Warmest regards to all your readers,

eden baylee

Moonlight and Merlot

The continuing saga of the lives, loves and heartbreaks of the residents of Dion Valley, CA.

As with all the best things in life, this is for adults only.

*****

Dark. It was always dark. And he was always running. Breathless, panting, a stitch pulling at his side, Nick ran and ran. The forest was dark and menacing and the branches of the barren trees whipped his face, tore his skin. Pain flared from every part of his body, threatening to topple him, to cripple him, to bring him down, and yet he ran on. He had to. There was no choice.

Somewhere, somewhere there was safety. Maybe. He thought that might have once been the case which is where he may or may not have been running to. He wasn't entirely sure. He couldn't really be sure of anything because the pain and the terror made it hard to think. To concentrate. Through the woods. He had to get through the woods. Then he would know. Maybe.

He crashed through the underbrush, his legs scratched and torn by the evil things that lived on the forest floor. So close. So much further. Could he run more?  Stopping wasn't an option.

In the distance, a light. A light! Nick's heart filled with hope and tears formed in his overly dry eyes. A light in the night. The little rhyme made him smile. A light in the night. It was a chant, a spell, a prayer.

But there was something behind him. And it was gaining. He could it hear it. Hear it ripping through the forest. Go! His mind screamed with panic and rage. He did not want to be caught. He did not want to run. No more running. He stopped and turned to face the menace in the dark. And then he realized it was a mistake to stop. He should have continued toward the light. But it was too late. It was near, it was coming, it was NOW…

Nick woke a start in his own bed. He drew in a long, shaky breath and scrubbed his hands over his face, trying to calm his pounding heart.  A dream. Always that same damn dream. There was no forest. No darkness. Nothing to worry about. He was at home, in his apartment, in his bed. He was warm and he was naked and he was alone. Wait. Alone? That wasn't right.

"Lela?" he called.  He waited for her to answer, but when no response came, he threw the covers aside, got out of bed and went to look for her.

[Until next Tuesday…]

Six Sentence Sunday

It is Super Bowl Sunday and though I care not one bit about football, my novella, Sculpting a Demon, is set in Pittsburgh and the thing about Pittsburgh is that you can't mention the city, think of the city, or properly represent the city without mentioning the Steelers.

So, here are my six Steelers sentences this Super Bowl Sunday.

Arien looked out the window as they drove, tapping his knuckles gently against the glass. "Have we entered the domain of some powerful sect?" he asked, breaking the comfortable silence they shared.

Lila smiled as her eyebrows furrowed. "What do you mean?"

He pointed at a family clad in identical Steelers jerseys standing on the curb. "Almost everyone we have passed has been dressed exactly like those people."

Lila laughed. She had become so used to seeing people decked out in their black and gold finest, football season or not, she no longer noticed the anomaly. "They love the Steelers here."

From the Vault of Goddess Karen

I've sat on Santa's lap and whispered naughty toys that I wanted into his ear. I've tied my beloved up in ribbons from our New Year's Eve party and watched with amusement as he attempted to wriggle out. Now it's February and what else is there to write about but the pinnacle, the summit, of great love? VALENTINE'S DAY.

My candy shall be fed to me by his hand. Enya will NOT be playing on my CD player; more like Mazzy Star or Portishead. My favorite flowers (gerber daisies, FYI) will grace the house amidst candles I got for Christmas (LOTS of them, too…my readers know how I feel about candles!)

Hmm… speaking of candles… it makes the Goddess think about wax. And wax can be lots of fun. Ever try it in dom play? For those of you that haven't, allow me as always to illustrate…

First off, I would not subject my subjects to play I haven't previously endured myself. Remember, I am a switch and played the sub role in the past. That's what makes it so delightfully easy to get inside the head of a submissive. So before I drip wax onto the back of my beloved, I'll let you in on my recent experience with the hot stuff.

I got a sphinx.

A sphinx is a front to back, all-over not-missing-a-hair wax that one gets below the border. This means no tuft, no landing strip, no cleverly shaped designs that you may favor (yes, gals request hearts & clovers to be sculpted on their mons, but if I wanted Lucky Charms I'd buy the cereal). Anyway an upscale salon near me provides every service I could desire. Pedicures to rival modern art, massages to die for, and friendly pain-filled waxing services. It's Valentine's Day after all so I can spread my legs for a good cause. My beloved had never laid eyes on a clean, sassy sphinx wax.

I imagine the procedure got its name from how one may have to pose while getting the wax, however the skilled technician I go to can accomplish the task without making me assume the position. The wax is HOT. The pain is delightful (to me). The vulnerable place I'm in reminds me none of us are immune to the calling of our most pulsing desires. It's almost an erotic experience for me.

Before my beloved is privy to my intimate gift, he is obligated to endure a bit of wax play himself. It's only fair. Taper candles are best, so rip them from your dining room centerpiece and light 'em up. Pillar candles work if they've been burning long enough to accumulate a decent pool of wax, but pillars are basically a one-trick pony. Good for a wide splash, but can't rival tapers for the constant supply of wax.

Naked he lies. Face down on the carpet. We've placed a few contractor bags underneath him to protect the floor from wayward drips. Now we begin.

I sizzle my beloved with a dollop or two across his shoulders, just enough to acquaint him with the heat he is to endure. "I am at your service," he murmurs respectfully, inhaling deeply as I send a string of wax beads down his spine. The higher you hold the candle the more time the wax has to cool before hitting the skin. I keep it close to his back. He feels the warmth of the flame as well as the hottest droplets I can produce. The wax is a French blue. I design a hawk-like figure across his shoulder blades. The process is like a molten tattoo.

"Yours," he whispers from somewhere deep inside himself.

"Oh yes," I reply.

The aforementioned pillar candle has had time to melt. I have a round little pool of wax that will dash just fine across his buttocks. I want there to be a pink slash after he peels off the wax to remind him of his ordeal.

This execution is more severe, but he must prevail. My boy has never said no. I tilt the pillar candle at an angle & let loose quickly with the wax. Goosebumps rise on his skin. He cries out and bites his hand. But he takes it. He always takes it.

And now his Valentine's present. Access to my sphinx. Once he cleans up I am waiting for him, wet at his submission to me. This little scene has rewarded us both.

Pain and pleasure, my Readers. Hand in hand in the world of the Goddess. May you play safely and open your mind this lovely loving season.
