Songs With Missing Nominations 2

Madonna gets no love from the Academy. For anything. Though two of the songs she's performed written by others ("Sooner or Later" from DICK TRACY and "You Must Love Me" from EVITA) went on to win the Oscar for Best Song for Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice, none of the songs she personally has penned ever made the short list. "Live to Tell" from AT CLOSE RANGE, "Who's That Girl" from the film of the same name, "I'll Remember" from WITH HONORS, and "Beautiful Stranger" from AUSTIN POWERS: THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME all got shafted. Perhaps the best of her songs not to be nominated is "This Used To Be My Playground" from A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN. Written by Madonna and Shep Pettibone and sung by the Material Girl herself, it was a world wide hit in the summer of 1992. At the Oscars that year, "A Whole New World" from ALADDIN continued Disney's monopoly on the song category that started with THE LITTLE MERMAID in 1989. Of the nominated songs that year, I would have chosen the other ALADDIN song, "Friend Like Me."

One Good Thing

I got word today that one of my short stories, "Chasing Jamie", has been picked up by Dreamspinner Press for their anthology Uniform Appeal , set for realease April 11th. Woo to the hoo! This is turning into a wonderful week for me. On Friday, my latest novel Woke Up in a Strange Place , is released, and Saturday I'm having a launch party (of sorts) at a local pub. I keep telling myself to relish weeks like this. They've been few and far between this past decade.

Songs With Missing Nominations

Leading up to the Oscars, I'm going to feature five amazing songs for the next five days that, either for arbitrary reasons of rule or bad judgement on the part of the voters, were passed over for being nominated for the Best Song award. The first, from BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, is "A Love That Will Never Grow Old", written by Bernie Taupin and Gustavo Santaolalla, and performed by the great Emmylou Harris. It won the Golden Globe for Best Song, but was ineligible for the Oscar because it wasn't featured heavily enough in the film. The Oscar that year went to "It's Hard Out There For a Pimp" from HUSTLE & FLOW which beat out my choice of the nominated, "Travelin' Thru" by Dolly Parton from TRANSAMERICA. I know, right? Anyway...

One Good Thing

Can't type too well...keys are sticky with residue from Cadbury caramel eggs...num num num...The Cadbury egg season is one of the most delightful all year. Thank you, Mr. Cadbury Bunny for crossing animal and gender lines and laying these delicious eggs. Keep your Peeps and little hard shell chocolate candies, world. Gimme cream... and caramel encased chocolate.

Wow. What a pointless blog entry. Oh, well. I got my eggs.
