Road To Home - Girl In A Coma

One of my favorite songs from a couple of years ago. Groovy video too.

One Good Thing

The opening scene of the film Chicago, with Catherine Zeta-Jones belting out "All That Jazz." Just a great, brassy scene. I remember seeing the film in a packed theater in Australia with my friends Sarah and Jenn. At the time I was in love with the film. Now, I like it, but over the years it has lessened its hold on my heart. For my money, Cabaret is still the best of the film musicals. Still, Zeta-Jones was/is wonderful in Chicago. (Though I remember being miffed that Robert Altman's version, starring Goldie Hawn and Madonna, never got off the ground. But Hawn was too old for the part of Roxie.)

Anyway, now I'm going to be singing "All That Jazz" for the rest of the day. (For anyone interested, Ute Lemper does a great version of that song as well.)

One Good Thing

I changed the name of my blog! Well, kinda. I elongated it, and who isn't the better for a little elongation? Am I right? Am I right? Yeah. You know what I'm saying, ya filthy buggers!

Anyway, no longer is this site called Deventry Blue. Now it is called Daventry Blue: Eric Arvin and the Useless Magnificence. Why the change, you ask? Well, I felt like it. I wanted to get my name up there in the title to make it easier for anyone searching for me or my writing on the net. I should start up another author site, but I never did anything with the one I had. Blogs are visited so much more.

I might ask Absolutbleu if he'd mind adding my new title onto the beautiful banner he created for me. Or maybe not.

Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks

Interesting sound. Pretty pretty boys. Seriously. Did Abercrombie & Fitch start a band?

One Good Thing

I got this message from a beautiful reader this morning:

Hi Eric

I just finished reading "Woke up in a Strange Place", and I'm speechless. Even though I really loved the books I have read by you so far, this one is my favorite. I've never read anything like that.

I admit I had to cry while reading certain scenes....

It really amazes me that you always create such vivid and unique characters. Also the way you described "heaven", I loved that there were dinosaurs, talking animals, knights and a pug that was drinking rum. I loved all of them.

I think I can say with a certainty that you are one of my favorite writers.

It's letters like this that keep a writer going. Thank you so much! To be called anyone's favorite writer is the highest of honors.

The Vintners Luck - The Trailer

I'm a big fan of Elizabeth Knox's beautiful book "The Vintner's Luck," about a wine-maker and his relationships. The heart of the book revolves around his connection, at times romantic, to an angel. They fall in love, and it's gorgeous and honest and poetic. The problem I have with this forthcoming film adaptation is, it seems to have erased any signs of that major plot point. There appears to be no sign of the gay theme anywhere in the trailer. This may be a hiding tactic on the part of the promo team to get more butts in the theater seats, but, honestly, I don't think that makes me feelany better about it.
