Uintah Basin Standard and Vernal Express

If you live outside Duchesne county, you might be wondering what the heck that means. So I'll tell you.

The Uintah Basin Standard and the Vernal Express are two of the local newspapers that serve the Uintah Basin area and Vernal city (home of Dinosaurland and Dinosaur National Monument), both in northeastern Utah, my great home state.

Last week I received a call from Brittany Wilkerson, who writes for the two papers, asking to interview me about Rapunzel Untangled .

Because you can't see the article online without a subscription to one of the papers, I've put a copy of the article below. Thanks to Brittany for her fantastic article!

Magic, mystery and romance become entwined in modern-day Rapunzel tale
By Brittany Wilkerson

Special to the Basin Standard

Several years ago my mother read a newspaper article about a girl who Googled herself and found out that she had been kidnapped.

Concerned for my welfare, she called me and told me that I should Google myself to see if I had been kidnapped.

My mother thinks she’s pretty funny and, no, Google didn’t have anything to say about me, but for Rapunzel in "Rapunzel Untangled," it’s not very funny. And she had lots to learn from Google.

"Rapunzel Untangled" by Cindy C Bennett is a modern retelling of the classic story.

Rapunzel is a teenager with a serious illness and a seriously sketchy mother. Her illness, and her mother, keep her locked up in a tower but neither can keep the Internet at bay.
Rapunzel meets the Fab Fane Flannigan on Facebook and they start a friendship that changes everything.

Even though "Rapunzel Untangled" is set in modern times there is still super-long magic hair involved. And maybe even a little hair climbing, but you’ll have to read the book to know for sure!

Readers shouldn’t get the book confused with the recent movie "Tangled"; "Rapunzel Untangled" stands on its own.

I enjoyed reading the interaction between Fane and Rapunzel. Their relationship and the growth of Rapunzel as she learns new things were well written. It was easy to get wrapped up in the story and even easier to like Fane.

"Rapunzel Untangled" is not Bennett’s first fairytale.

She has written a collection of short story fairytales as well as "Heart on a Chain,""Immortal Mine,"and "Geek Girl." Bennett is currently working on a sequel to "Immortal Mine."

Bennett was born and raised in Utah and currently resides in West Jordan, Utah. Though Bennett is a romantic at heart she loves writing Young Adult fiction. When her daughters started reading the genre, she wanted to know what her daughters were reading and has been hooked ever since.

Speaking of her readers, Bennett said, "I hope that I have given them a couple hours worth of entertainment. I’m not out to write the next great American novel. I don’t have that in me, but I hope that I have written a good, entertaining and interesting book that allows them to escape from their reality for just a little while."

I know that I was entertained for a few hours while I escaped the reality of dishes that needed doing! "Rapunzel Untangled" was released February of this year and can be purchased online at Amazon. com, Barnesandnoble.com, Deseret Book, Seagull Book and at Cedar Fort Publishing.

For more information about the author and her other books readers can visit her blog at www.cindybennett.blogspot.com or her Facebook page at www.facebook.com/authorcindycbennett

Starseed Blog Tour Excerpt

Tour Schedule

Starseed
Author: Liz Gruder

SUMMARY

*************************
Starseed concerns a sixteen-year-old girl who falls in love with a starseed boy who reveals that she, too, is half extraterrestrial, and is forced to choose her allegiance between Earth and her star family.
*************************

Kaila Guidry has always known she is different. When she meets Jordyn Stryker at school, she finds out just how different.

Jordyn was born and raised far from Earth, a starseed, one of six new students sent to Louisiana's Bush High to learn human ways. But Jordyn didn't count on meeting someone like Kaila.

When Kaila is pushed to her limit by high school bullying and cruelty, Jordyn awakens her to a new reality—and to love. But to prove herself, Kaila must look the other way as the real purposes of the starseeds unfold.

As the horrific plan behind the starseed visit to Earth moves inexorably forward, Kaila and Jordan, caught in an impossible love, must determine where their true loyalties lie.

Starseed Excerpt  Kaila marveled at the rugged, orange planet etched with ridges, mountains, and craters. Melted ground shimmered around a large crater, for Venus was hot, close to the sun.
“The highland area at the equator,” Jordyn pointed, “is Aphrodite Terra. Do you remember Aphrodite?”Kaila scanned her photographic memory. Aphrodite is the Greek goddess of love, beauty, pleasure, and procreation.
Jordyn’s face and body appeared red-orange in the fierce glow emitted from Venus. “And now, here, before me, is Aphrodite reborn.” Jordyn stared at Kaila earnestly; his fingers tightened over hers. “She was quite beautiful, as you are.” Kaila flushed; no one had ever told her she was beautiful. She faced Jordyn, whose eyes again looked like an intelligent owl’s with immense black pupils. His eyes devoured her every nuance. She felt inexplicably drawn toward this boy-man, wise beyond his years. She wanted to dive deeper into those unfathomable eyes. She sensed if she dropped into those eyes she’d travel through a portal into the beyond, some place like she hovered in now. She would face herself, through him, realizing union and home.
“We are not all human,” Jordyn spoke to Kaila’s mind. “We are a blend of human and what you call alien— beings from another place in the universe. This is what makes us special. And what makes us different. You are like us, Kaila. This is why we felt connected from the moment we met. You’ve always felt different— and lonely— we know. We understand.” They floated in space, between Venus and the sun. Kaila’s heart glowed, warm as that sun. He knew her; he understood her.

Praise

"After reading Starseed, my faith in YA sci-fi has been restored! ... I didn't want to put it down ... it had enough mystery and suspense to keep me going, page after page. Superb job 4.5 out of 5!"
-- The Forbidden Library Book Reviews

"I would recommend this book to all sci-fi lovers and, to those who aren't into it, take a chance. Who knows? You may love this book just as much as I did! Liz Gruder is definitely an author you should keep a look out for as she has great talent in writing and a huge imagination. Starseed was a wonderful read and very different from other books I've read. It was a very nice change from what I usually read and kept me enticed all the way."
--Starlight Book Reviews

"Interesting read. A lot like Roswell, but different. Gruder does a great job building the dark mystery of what the aliens are really up to on earth."
--Charity Bradford, sci-fi author, "The Magic Wakes"

“The story caught me off guard and won me over after the first chapter. The main conflict is a personal one for Kalia. Will she embrace her alien side or continue life as a human?”
--Pixie Dust Book Reviews

Starseed is a fun sci-fi read with romance. It brings light to the cliques of high school, and challenges the main character, Kaila, to be herself, instead of how others expect her to be.
--Kerri Cuevas, YA Author "Deadly Kisses"

"Liz Gruder's characters come alive through youthful, spunky narrative, and her headstrong heroine, Kaila Guidry, elicits a reader's encouragement from the first page. Fans of P.C. Cast will find themselves similarly transported into Gruder's exploration of the dark sides of faith, love, higher dimensions, and, of course, high school."
-- Jadie Jones, YA author "Moonlit"

Author Liz Gruder

As a youth, Liz Gruder saw a series of UFOs with her best friend while riding bikes. Ever since, she’s held a fascination for the stars. After going through Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Liz realized how short life is and is now slowly fulfilling her bucket list: she’s been to the Egyptian pyramids (totally awesome and thought provoking) and is now teaching yoga and writing speculative fiction. Matt Archer: Blade's Edge Book Blast

Matt Archer: Blade's Edge

When Matt Archer was fourteen, he discovered monsters are real. As if that wasn’t enough to go on for a few decades, Matt also found out that he’d been chosen to hunt those monsters--with a sentient, supernatural knife. Now fifteen, Matt has spent the last year working with a clandestine military unit, trying to rid the world of monsters, demons and other vicious creatures, all while keeping it a secret from nearly everyone he knows back home in Billings.

Including his mom.

Add in a new girlfriend, family secrets, sibling drama and enough homework to sink an aircraft carrier, and Matt’s life has become more complicated than he ever imagined. Worse, the knife has developed some very definite opinions about Matt’s personal life and it interferes in his business whenever it wants. More and more, Matt’s coming to realize that sharing brain-space with a spirit kind of sucks.

When stories of decimated towns and hordes of zombies start pouring into the Pentagon from Afghanistan, Matt knows he’ll be called up soon. Between the new mission and the knife’s increasing control over his mind, Matt wonders if he’ll survive long enough to take his driver’s exam.

Review Quotes for Matt Archer: Blade’s Edge

“Blade's Edge is an exciting continuation of the Matt Archer series. Kendra Highley did not fall victim to the sophomore funk. She has written an emotional and power story about Matt's horrific journey to rid the world of monsters.” –Kinx’s Book Nook (Amazon)

“I enjoyed Matt Archer: Monster Hunter to the point I was picking it up every time I had spare moments (which are few in my home), but MA: Blade's Edge has blown me away! Ms. Highley has crafted a story that comes to life with vivid images, exciting adventures, and thrilling mishaps that add a touch of humor (driving test, anyone?)” –Kelly C. (Amazon)

“"Matt Archer Blade's Edge" more than delivers what a reader wants from a sequel. The tension and action are taken up a level, as are the mysteries and plot developments.
Best of all, you feel the time passing from book to book and see the characters really grow and change.” –Picky Reviewer (Amazon)

“The Matt Archer books are the best young adult books I've read since I was a young adult! Think Supernatural for a younger audience, but better. I'll be ordering paper copies for my Favorites shelf. Not to be missed!” Sarah G. (Amazon)

Matt Archer: Monster Hunter

Fourteen-year-old Matt Archer spends his days studying Algebra, hanging out with his best friend and crushing on the Goddess of Greenhill High, Ella Mitchell. To be honest, he thinks his life is pretty lame until he discovers something terrifying on a weekend camping trip at the local state park.

Monsters are real. And living in his backyard.

But that's not the half of it. After Matt is forced to kill a strange creature to save his uncle, he finds out that the weird knife he took from his uncle's bag has a secret, one that will change Matt's life. The knife was designed with one purpose: to hunt monsters. And it's chosen Matt as its wielder.

Now Matt's part of a world he didn't know existed, working with a covert military unit dedicated to eliminating walking nightmares. Faced with a prophecy about a looming dark war, Matt soon realizes his upcoming Algebra test is the least of his worries.

His new double life leaves Matt wondering which is tougher: hunting monsters or asking Ella Mitchell for a date?

Review quotes for Matt Archer: Monster Hunter:

“Terrific page turner; I stayed up half the night reading it, and now I can't wait for the next installment.”  --Amelia Anne (Goodreads)

“The action is quick-paced, abundant and so much fun!!! I can't get over just how awesome of a read this book is; I can't wait for more!!!” --Danielle S. (Goodreads)

“I can't remember the last time I had this much fun reading a book. The eponymous narrator is a very likable and believable hero, the world is rich and detailed….
It has been a long time since I was a teenager, but I'm pretty sure that this book would appeal to an audience of all ages.” -- Misha B. (Goodreads)

“The action doesn't stop. Seriously! I was up until after 1am because I couldn't put it down!” --Riamachia (Amazon)

“It's funny - I thought I was too old for YA stories, and then I realised that I was just looking for the right kind of stories to hold my interest. This is one of those. If you're looking for vampires or angels or similar things that tend to make up YA novels at the moment, you won't find that here - you will, however, find something a bit more awesome.” –Sweartoad (Amazon)

"You know from the opening paragraph that something very strange is going on… We see Kaila try to live the life of a normal teen, and we see her "otherness" pull her back into an increasingly tangled web of questions, deceit, and hidden intentions. Liz really shines as a writer, lining the closets and drawers of everyday life with spine-chilling suspense that springs out at you when you least expect it. Starseed is an entertaining read. I highly recommend."

Connie Sokol stopped by the blog today with a guest post "Three Tips for the Writer in Progress." I want to thank Connie for her tips!

Three Tips for the Writer-in-Progress

1. Open yourself to feedback. As a writer, this is excruciating. We’re not typing random words, we’re gestating a literary baby. Passing that baby around for people’s cutting comments can be tough to take. When I wrote my first romance novel, Caribbean Crossroads, I received my rough final back with plenty of helpful suggestions. Some of them were painful to read. However, after reading the comments, I saw the light, made the changes, and celebrated when it was nominated for a literary award and hit #1 on one of Amazon’s Bestseller lists. Allowing yourself to “hear” feedback will yield rewards not only now but for future harvests.

2. Trust your gut. You’ll reach a point in writing when you just get it—you understand your voice, style, and ability, and what showcases those or how to improve them. Read, study, and learn from writing books, authors, experts, and more. And, as Rudyard Kipling says, “Trust yourself when all men doubt you; but make allowance for their doubting too.” When in that doubt, go with your gut.

3. Think outside the box. Whether it’s a writing concept or a promotional idea, now is the time to try something new. I saw a YouTube video of an author at a book signing who was singing a humorous song about buying his book. Utterly hilarious. If I had been there, I would have put my money down just to say kudos for his originality. The publishing world is changing rapidly, and as Neil Gaiman said, no one truly knows what it’s going to look like in two years, never mind five. What worked six months ago might seem archaic today. So be yourself, do something authentic, and track what happens. At one book signing I asked the store manager if I could give brief three to five-minute presentations over a microphone while the ladies shopped. I was amazed at how many women literally stopped to listen, then came over to speak with me afterward and purchase a book. As a speaker for over 15 years, this format worked for me, though it may not for you. But the point is, find what does then do it with style.

Give one of these tips a try and let me know what happens.

Praise

"Connie Sokol, the queen of simple yet effective, has done it again. What a great resource for quick, daily things that we can do to draw closer to the Savior. This easily fits into our busy lives, reminding us of what matters most."
~Peggy Urry, President-elect, American Night Writers Association

“I LOVED this book! Connie brings these scriptures home with real, everyday moments. I can savor these bite-size gems throughout my busy day with little ones. The teachings are powerful, and her added insights brought them home for me in a new way."
~Amy Chandler, Founder My Story Matters

“Connie Sokol’s new book, “40 Days with the Savior”, is just the little push I needed to feel the Savior’s presence in my daily life. Using personal stories, scriptural accounts, and meaningful insights, she helps readers draws closer to Jesus Christ and become a more Christ-centered person. I loved her daily nuggets of wisdom, with titles like, “He Did the Right Thing” and “He Gently Corrects”, to prompt a change of behavior. My Easter will be more meaningful this year!”
~Jodi Marie Robinson, Author of “Women of Virtue” and “A Royal Guardian”

“Connie Sokol has thoughtfully shared fresh insights to well know scriptural phrases. The simple meditations in 40 Days with the Savior are enlightening and empowering. This is an easy way to draw closer to Jesus Christ throughout the Easter season and during the rest of the year. After reading this book I feel my burdens are lighter.”
~Margaret Turley, Author of Save the Child, Administrator Writers Unite to Fight Cancer
