Geek Girl Review
[image error]
I would like to thank Pat Henshaw from All About Romance for reading and reviewing Geek Girl. Here is some of the great review:
" Geek Girl is one of those sweet coming of age high school romances that is at times poignant and always insightful."
"Bennett gives readers enough that the fairytale framework of the story suspends disbelief, and readers will root for these two well-meaning people to get together."
"It’s only afterward, upon reflection, that readers might wonder if the wonderful story might be more glorious smoke and mirrors than true love."

Deliah Lopez Dreser’s in town to take care of family business. They say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, but there’s more to Lilah than meets the eye. Cole’s in danger of losing his heart when this firestorm throws sparks his way. However, is she simply playing him for the fool in order to exact revenge for her brother’s murders? Maggie and Seth’s reaction when the truth is revealed pushes friendship to the limit. And this time around it won’t be a Dreser causing an uproar in Port Fare. It will be Cole's good friend Booker. But does Booker have it all wrong? Usually not!
Excerpt:
“So, this friend of yours, does he have a specific style in mind?” I asked, hoping to stay the memories as we approached the elevators.
Booker pressed the up button on the wall, and the steel doors creaked opened. “Cole’s style. Hmm.” Booker seemed to be fighting a grin as we stepped inside. He pressed the third floor button. “Tell me, is utter bedlam a style, really?” He laughed. “In truth, Cole is one of the most generous and unassuming men that I’ve had the luck of knowing. His organizational skills, or lack thereof, are pretty much his only fault.” He shook his head and continued, speaking with just a hint of envy now. “There’s not a bit of guile in the man. He gives everyone the benefit of the doubt, and he never, ever crosses the line.” Booker looked at my quizzical expressions and laughed again. “I’m not kidding. Cole’s never even had a ticket, ever. Not for speeding, not for parking on the wrong side of the road, nothing. The guy’s a saint.” “I see. I’m not too fond of perfect people. They tend to make you feel inferior.” I ran a hand nervously over my hair again, smoothing the fly-aways down. “I may have painted him a little too perfectly,” Booker admitted as we stopped and the doors opened. He put his hand on the small of my back, guiding me out. It took every ounce of self-control I had not to rip it off. A shiver tore down my spine. “It’s a little chilly in here, isn’t it?” I said, trying to cover my reaction to him. “Maybe a little,” he said, looking at me strangely. Time to redirect. “What were you saying about Cole?” “Oh, yeah. The guy has zero organizational skills. He’s a brilliant doctor, mind you, but he’s not organized. He was promoted last month and his office is still a shambles.” Booker pointed to the second hall on the right and we headed for the second door. “He’s also a klutz. A serious klutz.” “Unorganized and a klutz aren’t such bad traits,” I pointed out as he reached for the door. “You’re right, they’re not. All kidding aside, Cole’s the most pure hearted person I’ve ever met. If I didn’t know better, I’d swear Mother Theresa had given birth to him herself. He makes me want to be a better man, know what I mean?” “I think he’s lucky to have a devoted friend like you,” I said honestly. The sincere expression in his eyes left no doubt he cared deeply about the klutz doctor. “Nope. I’m the lucky one,” Booker insisted as he shoved hard on the door. “It gets stuck. Think you can fix that while you’re decorating?” He rammed the door with his shoulder. It flew open and Booker stumbled inside, catching the door before it hit the wall. A tall man dressed in blue scrubs spun around to face us, hands wrapped tight behind his back, reminding me of a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar. I opened my mouth to introduce myself when I looked up into the most amazing deep blue eyes I’d ever seen. The words froze in my throat. Booker forgot to mention that Cole was breathtakingly gorgeous.
My Review:
I'm a fan of Sherry's books. She's one of my favorite YA authors. The first time I read Unloveable (which is an awesome book and will soon be a movie! You can read my review from Amazon at the bottom of this post) I completely fell in love with Cole. You can ask Sherry how gaga I've been over him since then, and how excited I was when I found out she was writing a sequel starring the hunky, klutzy doc.
I had a hard time liking Lilah with him, but that has more to do with the fact that no one could be good enough for my Cole than any dislike of her character. I actually really liked Lilah. For growing up as a Dreser, the girl has an amazingly high sense of morals and knowing right from wrong. And while her reasons for heading to Port Fare are a bit devious, there's some sympathy for a girl who's being forced to do something she doesn't really want to do.
As for Cole . . . *sigh* Cole. Let me wipe the drool from my chin and calm my heart. I can't say enough good about this particular character. Is it weird to be in love with a fictional character? Cole is not just swoon-worthy. He's beyond swoon-worthy. He's dream-at-night-about worthy. A brilliant doctor who's a klutz constantly getting hurt and without much coordination, he is also gorgeous, kind, giving, and caring. Also, forgiving. He manages to find it in his heart to forgive what most people would find cause for hate. Hold on a minute while a have a little Cole fantasy . . .
Okay, I'm back.
Their love story is a cute one. I loved watching Lilah try to remain distant from Cole even as she tried to play him, but unable to resist the utter charm that is Cole. I won't give away too much of their story other than to say Sherry manages to play with your emotions and heartstrings throughout the book, and the ending was perfection (for me anyway). It was great to see Maggie and Seth again, and to watch them as they marry and begin their life together. It was also fun to see Booker (who I hope to see starring in his own book soon) and to see that Maggie hasn't let up on her teasing of him at all.
You don't necessarily need to read the first book to read Cole and Lilah's story in Unbelievable, but you might be a bit lost as to who some of the supporting characters are and why it means anything that Lilah is a Dreser if you don't. I suggest you read Unloveable, then immediately follow with this one. Lucky you, you won't have to wait as long as I did for the sequel!

My Amazon Review of Unloveable by Sherry Gammon
I found Maggie's story very enjoyably readable. This poor girl lives in horrible circumstances, trying to maintain some normalcy, while being contantly told how unlovable she is. Then she meets Seth, who to her seems too good to be true - and he is to a degree, but not in the he's-so-perfect-he-can't-be-real kind of way. He just isn't what he professes to be. He's not a high school senior at all, but rather an undercover DEA agent. He's assigned to Maggie, and finds himself falling for her rather than maintaining a professional distance.
I've read some of the reviews on here, and some people complained of Seth being too perfect. I didn't get that impression at all. During Maggie's narration, we have to remember we are seeing him through her eyes, and of course she's going to think he's perfect. During his narration, I think Gammon does a great job of showing his humanity, how he struggles with his job vs his personal feelings. There were also some mentions of predictability, and though that's true in certain areas - though not annoyingly predictable, I have to say - there are also many places where Gammon completely throws the reader for a loop. I won't give details, but the story with Maggie and her mother definitely do not go according to happily-ever-after. There was also talk of Maggie making foolish choices. Um, hello, the girl is 17. Who of us did not make foolish choices when we were that age? Teens believe they are invincible, which is a huge part of their charm, and Maggie is just behaving as a typical girl her age might.
As to the love scenes - or lack thereof - I'm grateful to Gammon for keeping it clean. I think the whole world is well aware of the raging hormones of teens, but I don't think it's necessary to write books where they have no self-control. I happen to think there are a great many teens who do have control over their actions, and understand the consequences of giving in to urges. So while Seth holds back because of his upbringing, I applaud Gammon for showing that a young couple can have a hot, loving, sweet relationship without being physical. I did not find the story lacking at all in that area. I applaud ALL authors who write YA books that are appropriate for teens, rather than writing an adult book disguised as YA, but full of adult matter/content. Gammon is absolutely on the right track in that area.
I definitely recommend this book for ages 14-90. There is some violence, and some of the death scenes are fairly graphic, so it might not be appropriate for a younger crowd. Overall, you're going to enjoy this book, as I did.
Oh, and excellent cover! Perfectly catches Maggie's struggle.

Life is Too Short Collection by Connie Sokol Blog Tour

Excerpt:
Are We Having Fun Yet?
As much as I could complain (should I use that word?) about my sweetheart’s creative ways of parenting, I wouldn’t change them. Okay, maybe one or two things, nothing major. Sort of. But I’m learning about the benefits that his male perspective can bring. On my way out the door for my Wednesday Night Out, I asked him to please keep the kids on a schedule, preferably the one used in our home. When I arrived home a few hours later, I was delighted to see the five-minute pick-up had been an apparent success.
“Wow,” I said, “the place looks great, honey.”
Stone-faced, but with a twinkle in his eye, he corrected, “We were cleaning up the galaxy.”
Aha, the secret. As the night continued, I saw how this space theme got things done. When I asked if they had brushed their teeth, my son flashed his pearly whites and leaned in knowingly. “I had space bugs.”
When I commented on my other son’s neat Lego bracelet, he looked disgusted, “It’s a Buzz Light-Year laser, Mom.” Amidst the italics, I stood corrected. Harnessing their hyperspace energy, my husband accomplished what would have taken me more time and probably more chop-chop, let’s-get-it-done mentality, and they had fun. Are we having fun yet? Can we say today, last week, or last month that we have had fun with our parenting? One of the “funnest” summers I can remember so far is when my then two children, about three and one, had the Summer of Play. We literally played. Every day we went for a walk, sometimes two, pointing out trees, rocks, bugs, all the essentials. The kiddie pool was a staple, as was the after-swim smushy popsicles and warm towels. The local dollar theater showed quality kids’ movies, and sometimes we splurged on movie meals, just because. Laying on the grass or telling stories at naptime, it was by far the most enjoyable and relaxed summer I have ever had with my kids.
Parenting has definite perks. All the things we said we would do when we got older are at our fingertips, but how often do we play, chill, or stay up late? Valerie Bertinelli gave a great response to a distraught woman with picky eaters not cleaning their plates and whining for dessert. She replied, “Why does it have to be a rule to finish everything on your plate? Do you? … Kids won’t starve if they don’t finish their meals and they don’t need dessert every night. But every once in a while, freak them out and give them that scoop of ice cream before dinner!” Excellent advice for myself, I thought—“Girlfriend, you have got to lighten up.”
This is not throwing order to the wind. Establishing rules and routines are, as researchers note, essential to a child’s feeling of security. Knowing what is coming makes children feel more in control and less likely to be irritable, impatient, and all the rest of those i-words. It’s loosening the rigidness that makes the difference. A few days ago, at summer high noon, the kids collectively said they were not hungry, until someone saw the ice cream. Suddenly, they had appetites. On a whim, I said, “Do you want dessert first?” They were about to faint. “All right,” I said, “I officially declare this Dessert First Day.” And with that, we enjoyed: we savored, we sloshed, and we slurped that ice cream as it should be.
This was fun.

Welcome to Friday Five!

I've decided to start Friday Five. What is Friday Five you ask? On each Friday (unless I have a previous post commitment, such as a blog tour, etc.) I'll be leaving you a list of five. But five what, you ask with frustration. Five anything. Just a list of five somethings that either interest me, something that's caught my attention, maybe five things bugging me that week, five favorites . . . just five.
I'm going to begin by listing five things that are on my DVR as of today. Doesn't mean these are the only things on my DVR, just five that I'm currently recording and watching.
1. The Voice
This hasn't always been one of my favorite shows in the past. It was one I could kind of take-or-leave. If I watched it, great. If I missed it, no biggie. But when they added Shakira and Usher into the coaching mix alongside the always entertaining Blake Shelton and the hottie Adam Levine, it became a "must check out". After the first two episodes, it became a must see. I'll be honest, I could almost care less about the singers on at this point (I haven't formed an attachment to any of them yet). But I would watch this if it were nothing more than the four coaches just sitting around having a conversation. I find them an amusing mix, with hilarious banter, and the occasional bad dance (usually Blake dancing for Usher). I love these four together.
2. Bates Motel
Okay, why did it take so long for someone to come up with the idea for this show? Seriously, haven't we all wondered what drove Norman Bates to keep his mom's dead body, to dress up as her and kill when he was? Add into that the acting skills of the fantastic Freddy Highmore and the unfairly gorgeous Vera Farmiga (and please, we need more of Max Thieriot) and you have a show I can hardly wait to watch each week. It's creepy good fun!
3. The Following
Kevin Bacon on TV where I can watch him every week? I'm in! Joe Carroll might not be my favorite villain of all time (he's kinda like a watered down Hannibal Lechter) but the idea of a man creating this huge following of sadistic murderers willing to blindly follow him (Kool-Aid, anyone?) is a fascinating idea. Shawn Ashmore is great, which surpised me a little having him play sidekick to Kevin Bacon. But he definitely holds his own and has quickly become one of my faves on the show. And while I found the show more enjoyable - and interesting - with Carroll orchestrating everything behind bars, I suspect Hardy will find him soon enough and put him back. Some of the characters are well written (Ryan Hardy, Claire, Weston, Jacob Wells) while others leave a little to be desired (Carroll, Emma Hill, Parker) but overall I'm so far enjoying the ride.
4. Duck Dynasty
See, I don't just watch shows about murderers. I also watch shows about hyper-intelligent rednecks. It took me a while to catch onto this show, even though I'd heard lots of people talking about it. So I finally began watching it and I'm hooked. These guys are hilarious (and if you've seen the pics of them pre-scraggly beards, pretty hot). Phil is wisdom personified, even if sometimes his wisdom is inappropriate. Si is just plain funny, jack. I swear that guy won Vietnam single-handedly. Willy is happy to let himself be the butt of all jokes, even though we all know it was his smarts that made them all billionaires. But my absolute fave is Jase. His talking-heads are hilarious. Everytime he opens his mouth something funny comes out. I have a bit of a redneck crush on the guy. And, yeah, I know it's probably more scripted than not, but I don't care. I love it anyway. In fact, on St. Patrick's Day I wore a t-shirt sporting their faces with the phrase: Happy, happy, happy St. Patrick's Day. Besides, where else can you find a "reality" show that ends with a family sitting down to dinner together and thanking God for how blessed they are?
5. The Office
I debated between listing this and New Girl, but since The Office will soon be nothing more than reruns, and New Girl will hopefully be around for a bit longer, I chose this. I know The Office lost a huge character when Steve Carrell left the show, taking the blissfully naive Michael Scott with him, but I still watch the show faithfully. I'm attached to Jim & Pam (though their marital strife this season is annoying and not really believable), Dwight (who is kind of empty without having Michael to worship), Andy (who was better before he became boss), Angela (finding out her hubby is gay let her shine finally), Phyllis (always politely devious), Oscar (though I think he's a pig for having an affair with a married man), and the inspired additions of Clark and Pete (should have brought these characters in much sooner). I'm sad the show is going, and that the writers seem to have gotten a little lazy knowing it's the last season, but this still will always remain high on my all-time-favorite TV shows list.

If you want to really get a feel for how tragic the Titanic disaster is, go there and see not only stories about the actual passengers, but also there are pieces of the Titanic that have been brought up.
The most tragic and epic fictional love story I know is Romeo and Juliet. My favorite movie version of R&J is the 1968 movie starring Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey (mom of India Eisley for those who don't remember Olivia). I've always loved their story, even though I'm a big fan of happy endings. In this case, it works so I'll forgive it.

Kara Magari is about to discover a beautiful world full of terrifying things--Ourea.
Kara, a college student still reeling from her mother's recent death, has no idea the hidden world of Ourea even exists until a freak storm traps her in a sunken library. With no way out, she opens an ancient book of magic called the Grimoire and unwittingly becomes its master, which means Kara now wields the cursed book's untamed power. Discovered by Ourea's royalty, she becomes an unwilling pawn in a generations-old conflict--a war intensified by her arrival. In this world of chilling creatures and betrayal, Kara shouldn't trust anyone... but she's being hunted and can't survive on her own. She drops her guard when Braeden, a native soldier with a dark secret, vows to keep her safe. And though she doesn't know it, her growing attraction to him may just be her undoing.
For twelve years, Braeden Drakonin has lived a lie. The Grimoire is his one chance at redemption, and it lands in his lap when Kara Magari comes into his life. Though he begins to care for this human girl, there is something he wants more. He wants the Grimoire.
Welcome to Ourea, where only the cunning survive.
Excerpt:
Kara tumbled through the darkness. Whenever she tried to scream, dirt filled her mouth and nose. She eventually just held her breath, closed her eyes, and waited to be crushed in the landing. Two roots broke her fall and bent with her, slowing her momentum but bruising her ribs in the process. Her hands slid off the grubs and mud as she grappled for something to stop her fall. Her cheeks flushed, and her stomach floated into her throat, heaving and twisting with her body. She took a deep breath and thudded against something solid. She covered her head with her arms. Light poured around her as she held her position, waiting to fall deeper into whatever she’d gotten herself into this time. Her shoulder throbbed from the landing. Ringing hummed in her ear, but this was a new, silent place. She peeked through two fingers. Dirt clung to her now-ripped jeans, and red smudges covered the exposed skin on her arms. Her shoes were caked in mud. Blood seeped through a rip in her sleeve, and a purple bruise had already begun to spread over her kneecap. She searched her arms and shins to feel for breaks, but nothing stung. That was good, but her phone had disappeared and her pack was still in the gazebo. She leaned against the something solid that had broken her fall, which turned out to be a stone desk. Blood from her arm smudged the side where she landed, its red streak a vivid contrast to the desk’s white polish. A matching stone chair sat a foot or so from the desk, as if whoever had last sat in it had only just left. Her hair was a mess of tangles and soil, and the streaks of mud on her cheeks smelled like a combination of carrots and crusty leaves. She brushed away as much of it as she could, rubbing the last of the dirt out of her eyes and wiping her face with the least-filthy bit of her shirt. The edges of her vision blurred, but the room slowly came into focus. Stone shelves canvassed every wall from the floor to the twelve-foot ceiling. Every inch of every shelf was covered in books, each bound in colorful leather and labeled with gold symbols she couldn’t read. There were no doors in the walls of bookshelves, and the only light came from a pane of glass in the roof. Crimson sunlight leaked into what could only be a submerged library. Kara eyed the skylight before pulling herself onto the desk and reaching for the window, but it was at least six feet away. Without any rope, she would never be able to escape through it. She peeked over her shoulder, trying to figure out how she’d gotten into the room in the first place, but the only evidence of her fall was the pile of dirt where she’d been sitting. It was as if she’d appeared from thin air. I’m trapped.

Pwned Cover Reveal and Giveaway!
Author Shannen Crane Camp was kind enough to allow me to do a cover reveal of her upcoming novel Pwned, scheduled for release April 30. And no, for all of you non-gamers, I didn't spell that wrong. It's a gamers term (pronounced like owned with a p on the front). You can read what it means here.
She's also giving away a copy of Pwned. Enter using the Rafflecopter at the bottom of the post.
Without further adieu, here's the cover and beneath that, the blurb and a teaser of my review (yes, it pays to know the author since she let me read it first!). And, just for fun, Shannen's latest hilarious video blog where she talks about Pwned.
Reagan West has a perfect life. She’s at the top of the high school food chain as co-captain of the cheerleading squad and she’s best friends with the most evil girl in Albany, Tawny Perez, which means she’s never on the receiving end of her wrath. The only trouble in Reagan’s perfect life comes from the constant threat of her dirty little secret leaking to her fellow classmates and casting her into a lifetime of ridicule.
Reagan West is a closet gamer and hates her role as the evil cheerleader.
But, as any well versed teenager knows, it’s better to suppress your own nerdy tendencies than to submit to a lifetime of being shoved into lockers and so, Reagan bravely soldiers through life as a reluctant bully… until a boy from her guild moves to her school and becomes Tawny’s next target. The newcomer threatens to reveal Reagan’s nerdy little secret and force her to come to terms with who she truly is. Now Reagan has to decide if she’s going to defend her fellow geeks, or if she’ll continue to be a total troll.
My thoughts:
This is just a small portion of my review. You'll have to come back when Shannen releases the book to read the full thing.
If you are a gamer, you're going to love Pwned. If you're not a gamer, you're going to love Pwned.Shannen Crane Camp has managed to pull off quite a feat: a book about gamers that's so interesting, chanrming, and captivating that it doesn't matter whether you know what an expansion pack or DPS is. Pwned is a charming, funny, current, nerd-infested page-turner reminiscent of The Shop Around the Corner, or You've Got Mail.
This is definitely one you'll want to put on your TBR list!
Thanks, Shannen, for allowing me to share your cover with the world.
