Catching Up in the Rain
The rain is helping me catch up on all the rest of my life. As the world's laziest neighbor, I've been painting the neighbor's side of our fence in TINY increments. Yesterday, I had time for about three or four slats. Today, as long as it keeps raining, NONE!
Today, I need to read. I've got a ton of Wyrdsmiths critiquing to do before the meeting tonight. Unfortunately, I fell behind on Kelly's stuff, and Kelly writes so fast that means that I'm now in possession of a small ton. But, on...

Radio Interview Archive and My Crazy life.
If you missed listening to me blather live on KFAI's "Write On! Radio" you can catch it in the archived files: http://www.kfai.org/writeonradio.
Actually finding the file is kind of confusing. You have to click on the archive for 7/20/10, and accept the terms and conditions. Then it looks like you got nowhere because there's a list of all the guests, etc. BUT, if you scroll down past the announcements you'll find a tiny little header "Previous Shows" and a reddish button for either .mp3 s...

Busy, Busy
I apologize to my friends and family who use this blog to make sure I'm still alive and breathing. I am. I've just been, you know, busy.
Yesterday, I had to scurry home to wait by the phone like a love-lorn teen, waiting for Mary Ann Grossman from the Pioneer Press to call. The Pioneer Press still employs actual reporters who, like, do research and stuff. I've been interviewed by Mary Ann before, but she never fails to impress me (though I think I managed to insult her twice. Once, by tryi...

I Write Like an Ironic Dead Guy
According to , I write like, my writing style most resembles David Foster Wallace. I tried the analyzer several times and some scenes would get Dan Brown, while others would end with Vladimir Nabokov as a result. The one that it hit over and over again, however, was Wallace.
I, of course, being a complete non-literary fiction wonk, had NO IDEA who Mr. Wallace was. I certainly have never read a single word written by him. I'm cheered that Wikipedia says that his novel _Infiinite Jest_ is li...

TV Confirmation
I will be on KARE-11 on Tuesday, August 3rd for a live appearance on "Showcase Minnesota," which I think airs at 10:00 am. All I know is that I'm supposed to be at the studio by 9:45 am. It's confirmed. In fact, I just scheduled the hair and make-up person. hork-hork.*
Thank you to the one or two people who jumped in to tell me that I'm plenty cute for TV. I happen to agree with them. However, the reason I think of myself as having the perfect face for radio is because you just don't se...

Hork-Hork
Does your family have shorthand phrases? One of the ones in our family comes from a time when Shawn was sitting, minding her own business on the couch, when Ms. Ball our black-and-white kitty hopped up onto her lap as though to settle in. All of a sudden she made a tiny little "hork-hork" sound and deposited a hairball right in Shawn's lap. She, all cat-like, primly hopped away as if that's what she meant to do all along. Leaving, of course, chaos in her wake.
We use "hork-hork" as short h...

I'm Back
Sorry for the long absence, I was in Indiana visiting the in-laws. Man, that is a long, awful drive. But we're only doing it once this year, so it's done. We had a good time. Probably the highlight was the fireworks show in ValParasio. It was actually surprisingly spectacular, and by chance, Shawn found us the perfect spot. Not too crowded or too buggy, and a lot of really interesting unique fireworks. I say this, too, I should add, as someone who is NOT a big fan of loud noises and wh...

Lightning and More
As those of you who are also FB friends already know, last Friday night our house was hit by lightning. The actual event took about two seconds (FLASH! BAM!), but I've been dealing with the aftermath now for several days. The strike didn't cause damage that the insurance inspector would accept (though I'm convinced it made our old, rotty roof worse when it shook the house,) BUT he did see wind damage that he would. So, now we're in the process of getting a new roof (rooves, actually, as t...

Way Too Much Fun
Last night I was up until 11:00 pm writing. And giggling. Let's just say there's now a scene that involves a well-known Minnesotan/public radio show host and... vampires.
I amuse myself.
Thanks to everyone who gave me thoughts about Mason, especially
naomikritzer
for pointing us in the direction of Leonardo's Basement, which I think Mason will enjoy this August. I also had kind of a break-through moment with Mason at the breakfast table. Another thing that Shawn and I have struggled with is...

Okay, MOSTLY Back to Normal (er, for Me, Anyway)
I spent much of yesterday, as you can imagine, running around squeeing. I did manage to get my 2,000 words written, but I also came to the depressing realization that there's a LOT more plot/book to write, regardless of word count. I'm going to have to try to up my daily word count if I'm going to get this done by June 30 (my deadline for beta readers to have adequete time to read and for me to respond. The book itself is due July 15.)
I should probably be writing right now, in fact, but I ...
