Weekend Report

Let's see, for starters, I got nothing done this weekend. Apparently, there was some kind of holiday on Sunday which involved a lot of stores being closed, which nixed our one big plan for the weekend: fixing the toliet seat. Apparently Minicon was this weekend as well, but I kind of forgot about that too. (I'm a little sadder I missed that.)

Mason had Friday off (which should have been a clue about the above holiday), and my writer friend Gary and his wife Brin came over and we talked a go...

Heroes and Enemies

As I noted below, Shawn and I spent her birthday shopping. We spotted a HalfPrice Books in Roseville we'd never seen before -- though, according to the clerk, they've been there for two and a half years. For us, it was like a mirage appearing in the desert.

Anyway, Shawn checked out the new releases and I headed for comics. I found some Brubaker DAREDEVILs and ran into my friend and fellow writer Bob Subiaga, who was also hunting for cheap, used comics. He and I chatted, and I left with mo...

I'm a TOTU Looser / Shawn's birthday Win

I didn't end up at the benefit last night. We had a number of errands to do after school, so we didn't get home and fed until nearly six thirty, and I decided it would be more rude to show up while people were reading than not to come at all. Plus, I'll admit -- I was EXHAUSTED after cleaning. I scrubbed the living room floor as well as the kitchen (and cleaning the stove and doing the dishes). It took me all afternoon, but Shawn was elated.

Shawn woke up this morning to several presents. ...

What to Do, What to Do?

I'm trying to decide whether or not to go to the TOTU benefit tonight at the Loft.

----

More on Books/Life

I'll bet there's something you don't know about me. I _love_ a good conspiracy theory. This all started when I was doing research for FALLEN HOST and I came across a book called, THE ANTICHRIST AND A CUP OF TEA by Tim Cohen, in which the author surrenders his copyright in case of apocalypse/the tribulation. (Oh how I wish I had thought of that! I wonder if Penguin would have let me!?)

Anyway, since then, I've bought books about any number of conspiracies: the knights templar's journey to A...

Marvel(ous) Weekend

My weekend actually started on Friday, because Shawn took the day off. We did a lot of retail therapy starting with her haircut at the Hair Police in Edina. Then we went off to lunch out (which we almost never do), the art store, Dick Bick, the scrapbooking store for her, and then, after picking up Mason, back to Barnes & Noble. Mason got the latest DEAR DUMB DIARY (#9). Plus, on Saturday, after a routine visit to the vet, we stopped in at HalfPrice Books, where I picked up a few more Str...

Photo Gallery: Bugs and Food

I thought I'd post a few photos of the recent goings-on in my life. First, last night, Mason's school had "Science Night." One of the reasons we chose Crossroads is because it's a science magnet. They have a "scientist in residence," who is a Bell Museum curator. So as part of the big event last night the folks from the Bell Museum came out with some of the animals from thier interactive area, including (much to mama's chagrin) the giant bat cave cockroach:

That's a grown man's hand the co...

Ostara and Turkeys

First, the turkeys: this morning, while driving Mason to school, I had to stop the car to let a wild turkey cross the road at Summit near Victoria. I pointed it out to Mason, who looked up from his Pokemon book and said (without missing a beat): "Huh. The chicken must have had the day off."

My son, the comedian.

Now, Ostara. Saturday was officially the Spring Equinox, or, for some of us, Ostara or Oester. Shawn and I were a bit disorganized this year, so the Ostara Bunny officially made...

Happy 100 Day

Mason's school has this tradition of celebrating the 100th day of the school year. They wear 100 day crowns, and (in kindergarten, at least,) did things involving the number 100. I have never heard of such a thing, but the kids seem to love it. I spent a good chunk of yesterday's volunteering time cutting out 100s and stapling them to strips -- clearly to be made into hat/crowns. Normally, it takes me two minutes to do the folders, and I was there yesterday for a whole hour. Then, since i...

St. Patrick vs. St. Paul

Happy Saint Patrick's day from Saint Paul. I'm about to fight my way into downtown to pick up Eleanor for our usual writing date, and I'm hoping that if I sneak in the back way I'll avoid much of the crazy that is Saint Paul on Saint Patrick's day. (Parade begins at noon!)

Speaking of Saint Paul, just yesterday I was complaining that our town was named after one of my least favorite saints. I still think Pig's Eye would have made a lovely capitol city of Minnesota. Brigid would have made a...
