Late-breaking St. Patrck's Day News
No, I did not find a date to the parade, but...
My father just wrote to tell me this cool bit of family (potential) history:
"I just read your blog. I must have told you the Morehouse/Irish story. Here it is. In 1999, when we were at Oxford for a conference (Living in college no less), I met 4 elementary teachers from Dublin. They attended my paper, and we were talking afterwards. Two of them started talking to each other and I overheard one saying, "Should we tell him?" They then told me that we

If I Twittered...
If I Twittered this moment's comment would be: "headed for lunch; up for a Lammy."
Because... the anthology PERIPHERY was just short-listed for the 21st Lambda Award in the lesbian erotica catagory. My AngeLINK short story, "ishtartu" included in that, though it's not terribly sexy and I'm sure it had very little to do with the nomination. But, if any of you have the power to vote on the Lambda, please consider casting a vote for PERIPHERY if you liked it!
Also, I am not watching the Saint Paul S

Kindergardeners Ate My Brain!!
This morning I volunteered to be a chaperone for a trip to the Dodge Nature Center. Here in Minnesota the sap has started to run (finally! We cracked 50F ABOVE this weekend, and it's already 60F today), and the Center gives kids a chance to identify a Maple tree in situ (in the wild!) and tap it. Then they showed us how the Maple sap is turned into syrup (lots of boiling), and they let us taste maple syrup, maple sugar, and maple sap -- the last, one child apply described as tasting a bit lik

Missed Writers' Group for Jane Austin
Last night I was supposed to go to Wyrdsmiths, but I stayed home for a "date night" with Shawn. We hadn't had one of those in a while and... we were in the middle of watching SENSE AND SENSIBILITY (BBC's version) and I needed to know what was going to happen next.
True confession? I'm SO not usually one of those Austin fawning types. Normally, at cons when writers start gushing about Jane Austin I try to remember if she was the one who wrote WUTHERING HEIGHTS or what (yes, I know that's actua

Who's Who? Why, Me, Of Course!
When I was a kid, I remember going to some university library (probably my father's) and seeing the WHO'S WHO books on the shelf. Even before I knew I wanted to be a writer, I had those fantasies I think everyone secretly has about wanting to be famous. I remember pledging that SOMEDAY (as God is my witness!) I'd get into the WHO'S WHO.
Well... guess what? Yep. Cambridge WHO'S WHO finally wrote the "please fill out the form, because you're going to be included" letter. Again, I'd worry this

Why I've Been Absent
Not only am I writing a lot, but the last couple of days have been... weird.
Monday was especially strange. My usual routine got interrupted by Shawn's physical. We only have one car, so, if I want to have the car during the day, it's my job to cart people around. I'm cool with that, and I brought my "homework" (aka the prequel) to the hospital, so actually that wasn't really a big distraction. But, while I was sitting there, one of Mason's classmate's father called with a favor to ask. He

Why Saying "It's Just Fiction" is a Cop Out
Least any of you think from my subject line that I'm weighing-in on RaceFail, I'm not.. (yet?) Honestly? I just found out about it at Wyrdsmiths on Thursday night. I'm AM a complete Luddite and never spend much time on-line, and it started in a place I never go because I don't like reading Elizabeth Bear's blog. She tends to piss me off when she talks about her grocery list. Plus, as I wasn't in on the discussion from the beginning, it seems like a really bad idea to say something at this p

I Frigging LOVE March
... because nothing could suck quite as much as February did. Wow, am I glad February is over.
Other than the nice day Mason and I had with Flo and cookie making, most of February will be remembered as the month of SICK. (Oh, and btw, for those who care, Shawn's migraine FINALLY lifted yesterday. That's right: March 1.)
Plus, today has provided any number of funky synchronistic bonuses. First, and probably best: today a fan friended me on Facebook. Whoopity-doo, you say, well to you I explain
