General Uneasiness, Sir!

I'm not the sort to feel general uneasiness, but today is starting out strange and somewhat... je ne sais quois.

The first odd thing that happened this morning was that when Shawn, Mason and I headed to the car to begin the various trips to work and school, we discovered our neighbor's tree completely toppled. At first I thought: Holy shit! It's so dry the trees are just falling over! This is not as crazy/stupid a thought as you might initially think. When it was really windy here the other w

More on Before

So, after writing about the weekend yesterday, I totally forgot about a million other things I wanted to tell you guys.

First of all, on Friday I went with Mason's kindergarten class to the Ordway for a show. Once again there was a last minute deal where all the kids got tickets to see something. This time Mason's teacher was much more on the ball. She actually read us the blurb they had about it, and reminded everyone how to behave in the theatre. (It's like she read my post... hmmmm.) Anyw

Bunnies, Gardens and Star Trek

It's been a long time since my last post, so I have a few things to report. First of all, y'all were absolutely right: the "Star Trek" re-boot rules. There was so much awesome and everyone's already seen it so, yeah. What you guys said. Only one very, very small moment of fangeekitude regret for me. Okay, I know that this is an alternate universe (which was deeply clever and totally worked for me), BUT the Kobashi Maru, didn't live up to its hype. I wanted the Old Universe Kirk to, yes, ch

Gardening Mice

I skipped working out today in order to continue working on the gardens. We have this nasty tangle at the side of our house which I spent much of this morning taming. I discovered a couple of volunteer bleeding hearts (not the showy old-fashioned ones, but the other fern-like ones) that I moved around. I also added more of my mother's day lillies here and there, filling in the empty spots made when I removed several ginormous trees that I some how never noticed growing right next to the house

Rotten, No Good Days

I should be writing, but I'm just sad. I buried a baby rabbit about an hour ago, and it was much harder than it should have been. Ever since Ostara, I've been very aware of the bunny activity in our yard. We had a family visit a lot early spring and I invited them (out loud, during one of our many "I see you, but you're pretending to be stone so I won't make any sudden moves" stare downs) to raise their family in my yard.

Well, they did.

We even witnessed the birth. One day when we were grilling

Daredevil and Spider-Man

... should be lovers, no wait, actually, I was planning to do a review of some older graphic novels and single issues of those titles I picked up over the weekend.

Before leaving for LaCrosse, my family and I stopped in at the HalfPrice Books in Highland Park (Saint Paul) for vacation books. Mason discovered a couple of cool new sticker activity books, including one with the rather evocative title: "Sticky History of the World." Shawn found a couple of good mysteries, and I browsed the graphic

Non-WisCON Report, (But I was in Wisconsin!)

I didn't go to WisCON this year, but I kept up with it on Facebook! :-)

Instead, my family and I went to LaCrosse, Wisconsin to visit the grandparents (my folks.) I'm surprised Mason is still upright for all the running around we did, particularly yesterday. (My folk are actually "running" him on the Marsh Trail right now.) On Saturday it was mostly rainy, but I discovered that my folks have a neighbor whose wireless connection is strong enough that I could steal it from the comfort of their

All the News That's Fit to Print (and More!)

Actually, I don't have much to say. It's hot as hell here, in the 90s, and the neighborhood is filled with its usual sounds: kids sassing each other, someone using a chainsaw, car doors slamming, etc. The air is hot and opressive. I really want to drink a cold Coke, but I've been trying to stay away from them, especially while I'm on my hiatus from the gym while Mason is still out of school.

I wrote very little in the past few days. I have no one to blame but myself. Instead, Mason and I go

Crickets and Other Outdoorsy Stuff

The Red Wing gig was much as expected. Four people attended (although technically only three, since one of them was the manager/owner.) Weirdly, I had one of my best EVER readings (though if you want to hear me read the first chapter of Dead If I Do, it's also on-line at Vampires, Witches & Geeks: Tate Hallaway Reads (Out Loud!).) Driving back into town, I saw one deer on the side of the road who was watching the passing traffic almost as alertly as we were all watching her. Hopefully, she g

Tonight Red Wing, Tomorrow The World!

Tonight Tate/I have a gig in Red Wing, MN. In fact, in about three hours I'm going to pick up Shawn early from work so I can make the hour and a half drive down there in time for... well, honestly, I'm expecting "crickets." (Which is to say, the sound of an empty store.)

I actually hate these out of town gigs. They're almost always embarrassingly underattended and I always leave feeling like I've wasted a lot of time, gas, and energy. Yet, this particular signing was arranged for me by my har
