Getting Back to Work is Hard
Getting back to work is hard, and, what's up with this day light savings time change thing? Everyone I know (including myself) is getting their butt kicked by the time change. As I told Shawn this morning when we woke up (late, AGAIN,) it's not like my body isn't getting the same amount of sleep. My brain is somehow still wired to think I'm getting up at 5:30 am, even though the clock says 6:30 am.
Another reason to hate the former president, I say.

Insurance, Doctors, Oh My!
As you know, Bob, I'm chronically under-insured. Shawn can't cover me on her insurance because Tim Pawlenty is our governor (no, seriously, we *had* domestic partner health insurance, and he took it away.) So, I haven't really gone to a doctor regularly since I was laid off at MHS, and became a full-time parent/part-time writer.
There's this guy in Burnsville (
naomikritzer
found him for me the day before a big article appeared in the Star Tribune about him) who takes cash, well, credit. H...

The Con Me or Wound Up about Verbs (Again)
For those of you who missed my performance at MarsCON, here is a small taste of the sort of rant I'm prone to when I attend such events: Why Do You Hate Verbs, Artist?
Srsly, what's up with dat? I know thinking up verbs that are not "to be" is difficult, but if our job was easy, everyone would do it. GAH!
In other news, I'm feeling better, though my gut is still cramping. (If I neglected to mention that here, I had a mild bout of food poisioning.) On a plus note, I lost four pounds. Not a...

Post-MarsCON, Post-Vacation
In my mind, this week started a lot better than it did. I'd been looking forward to Mason being back at school so I could get back to my routine, particularly going to the gym (which I haven't done since December). BUT on Monday, Shawn had a bunch of errands to do, including one I had to come along for -- taxes. Our tax guy used to be our neighbor (he was a tax guy before being our neighbor,) and he's phenomenal. And gay. Which is actually kind of important since the Federal government d...

I Have Glitter in My Hair
I have glitter in my hair. I've decided NOT to grow old gracefully. Yesterday, I took Mason to get his haircut at Kid's Hair and they always offer to spray some color into his hair -- pink, green or purple. He got green. I bought two cans to take home: pink and glitter. Yesterday I had pink glittery hair. Today, just glitter. I mean, what looks good with gray, I ask you? Glitter, that's what!
My hair is shorter too. Actually, a bit shorter than I wanted, but the hair stylist was clip...

Getting Desperate
Yesterday, in the middle of the afternoon, I was hit by a craving. Was it for chocolate? No. Was it for Doritos? No.
All I wanted to do was write.
But, alas, Mason is still off school for another couple of days. And, wouldn't you know it, my usually fairly self-sufficent child had one of those days when he really just wanted to hang with his ima. I held off until late night, and then... had no energy. I wrote a paragraph and then completely pooped out.

What I Did on Winter Vacation...
Below is a picture of Mason peeking out through a "window" in our gigantic snow fort. It's actually not quite as large as it seems in this picture, because we had to rebuild a large portion of the walls after the sun melted some major support stones.

I Knew this Panel was Trouble when it Walked into my Office
It seems like "noir" is being tacked on to just about every sub-category of the genre these days: fantasy-noir, science fiction-noir, vampire-noir, and so on. And even if it isn't attached to the genre label, the word appears on book jackets and in reviews in droves. But what do we mean when we say something is "noir"? What are the touch-stones that make something noir: must noir be gritty, violent, dangerous, or require a m...

A Trip to the Zoo and More
Yesterday, as part of Mason's "Intersession" (a three week break he has right now because he's in a year round school), he and I took our friend Eleanor to the "big zoo" (aka the Minnesota Zoo.)
Let me tell you something, now is the time to go to the zoo. You might freeze your butt off, but all the animals are...well, frisky. The wolverines were hilarious -- well, if you find biting, snarling, and trying to sit on each other (not, ehm, mount, but seriously trying to push each other around ...

Tap, tap, tap....
The sound of my anxious feet as I wait to recieve the first critique and probably most critical, (as in important, but possibly the other kind as well,) of RESURRECTION CODE.
So while I wait for my friend to show up, I twiddle my thumbs.
Not much else to report. No earthquakes here. Mason is doing well, though I did hear a funny story from one of his teachers today. Apparently, in music class they were singing what Pete Seeger calls a "zipper song" because you can add whatever you want to ...
