How-Tos: Books on Amazon Kindle? No Prob. Turn them into EPUB and Read Them Anywhere!
If you are like me, an e-book worm (or just a book worm in general who likes to one-click purchase e-books), you have e-books spread all over the place. Well, at least I did. I used to buy from B&N, Sony, Amazon, and Apple. I’ve since consolidated. I only purchase books from Amazon. Why? Kindle makes it easy to read. I have Kindle software on all my devices (iPhone, iPad, Macbook) and my kids have it installed on their devices (Nexus One, Galaxy Tab II, etc.). They are all connected to my acc...

Why Storytelling is So Important to Marketing
Posted in HypothesisMarketingStorytellingWriting
I recently wrote an exploration about Transmedia Storytelling as the future of digital marketing. A lot of the thinking behind this piece was related to my work at Limelight Networks and our recent pivot towards becoming the leader in digital presence management. The gist was this: our emerging multi-device behavior coupled with a growing “always on” existence requires that marketing messages are consistent across the devices. Transmedia storyte...
A Glimpse Into the Multi-Screen World
Posted in IdeasInfographicsInternet of ThingsMarketingMultimediaSocial MediaTechnology
Google (in conjunction with Ipsos and Sterling Brand) produced a powerful, insightful report into how we interact with content through the multiple screens/connected devices that are beginning to permeate our lives. I reference this study frequently in webinars (like this one about the Olympics), with some of the world’s biggest brands I get to work with, and various articles I’ve written since the publicati...
Review: Hands-on With the Kindle Fire
ZDNet posted a great review of Amazon’s new device:
http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/amazons-kindle-fire-snappy-consumption-impulse-purchase-device/63274
In short,
It’s worth noting that there’s only one button on the Kindle Fire, an on-off switch. The Kindle Fire was separated at birth—actually the contract equipment manufacturer—from Research in Motion’s PlayBook. The PlayBook is bulkier, but the screen and profile is almost identical to the Kindle Fire.
With that email note...
Nature in Slo-Mo
Posted in Photo
Slow-motion photography (6,000 frames per second) can create some fascinating displays of nature that may be impossible to really appreciate at their natural speed. Case in point? The frog below snacking on a tasty cricket.

Is the Web a Publishing Medium?
Posted in PublishingWriting
With all the talk about e-books and e-readers, I think we have forgotten about the Web as a publishing medium. Although many people publish “blogs” (like this one), that’s not what I am talking about. I’m talking about traditional publishing. Books. Page-turning fun.
I am unclear why the Web has not become more of a publishing medium for traditional books. It’s easy to monetize (ads and subscriptions/access rights). It’s easy to update (keeping the content fresh). It...
Do You Know What Entertainment Costs You?
Posted in Personal
This is a great post on analysis of personal spending for entertainment and communications:
http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/what_is_the_total_cost_of_your_entertainment_and_c.php
So some cost categories are:
Mobile phone (calling + data)
Internet access (i.e., Cable, DSL)
Going to entertainment events (movies, concerts, plays, etc.)
Buying Movies (i.e., DVD)
Renting Movies
Buying Music
Buying Books (includes digital)
Web-based streaming services (i.e., HuluPlus, Netflix, Pandora,...
Benefiting from Information Overload
Posted in HypothesisPublishing
There has been a lot of talk about the impact of information creation on our ability to remember as well as the power of language. But one unacknowledged benefit of having everyone connected via a vast social network is our ability to raise awareness for issues and to seek out advice. In the article link below from Slate, a mother was able to diagnose her son’s condition by posting pictures to Facebook and interacting with both a primary and secondary network of...
Sell Food? Own a Bar? Tips to Help You Leverage Facebook
Facebook has a lot of great features to help restauranteurs leverage the power of social media in driving foot-traffic (and word-of-mouth referrals) to their establishments. Is Microsoft Missing the Bigger Picture?
Like I have written about before with the tablet/e-reader market, these devices, long-term, are loss-leaders. Even the iPad. The real money to be made is a long-term relationship with the customer to fill that device with software, media, and services that cost incremental dollars. Much research has surfaced pointing to this, that tablet owners consume more of everything (probably because of the portability, great UE, and connectivity).
But Microsoft has said: no.
