September 30, 2021: Random Fun Generator 2 Campaign Ends Today

Our Kickstarter campaign for  Random Fun Generator 2 , a new (stand-alone) book of family dice games, comes to a close today, making this your last chance to take advantage of the Kickstarter bargain! This book includes over 20 new dice games, all for use with six-sided dice, and there are a limited number of the special reward levels still available.

The project is scheduled to deliver in 2022, but there is a holiday reward level that is set to ship in November. If you are looking for several gifts to share with friends and family – or to keep for yourself (we won't judge) – don't miss the $225 level!

September 29, 2021: Crowdfunding Focus: Iain Lovecraft's A Tale Of Two Cities

Three STL Kickstarters in two weeks? Seems like a lot, but this is a growing part of the hobby, and sometimes the good ones just come that fast. Iain Lovecraft not only sculpts excellent sets of models at very good prices, he gives out free samples with each project. The samples aren't just a figure or two; they're things like an entire watchtower! They're well worth a print, and an excellent demonstration of how good the sculpts actually are. These projects have a loyal group of backers, and it's easy to see why. The creator constantly interacts with the backers, whose suggestions for miniatures become stretch goals and "grab bag" elements. Previous projects are available as add-ons (for a limited time) as well. This project is closing very soon, so check it out while you can.

September 28, 2021: Now Available On Demand: GURPS Conan Beyond Thunder River

Looking for something thematic to carry your Puppy or Kitty d6 Dice Sets ? Check out this Kickstarter for the Pet Carrier Dice Box from Plastic Dungeon. They're an indie 3D printing company and this is a pretty darn cute way to carry dice, so I figure it's a win-win! Supporting smaller creators with a very affordable product is always a good choice, and this also gives the option to print your own box if you have the means. The campaign ends in a few days so back for a carrier, or even a whole kennel!

September 25, 2021: Inflation, Or 1987 Car Wars Prices Vs. 2021 Prices

One downside to a 40+ year history as a company? The "back in my day, we paid . . . " brigade and the ever-painful reality of inflation. I'm personally as guilty of this as anyone, and remind myself regularly that this isn't 1987 and that games should cost more than they once did. After watching a few Facebook discussions over the last month, I thought it might be fun to yank a few pages from a 1987 Steve Jackson Games catalog and show the old prices vs. what those same items (near-exact reprints created thanks to your support on Kickstarter) cost today. Car Wars - $6.50 in 1987, $19.95 today. When we use a handy inflation calculator, we see that $6.50 in 1987 dollars is roughly the equivalent of $15 today. Considering that the newest printing of the game includes die-cut components (which we did not have in 1987, as my fingers at the time would happily prove), the extra $5 is totally worth it. Car Wars Expansion Set 1 - $4.50 in 1987, $10 today. $4.50 adjusted for inflation is the equivalent of $10.39 today, meaning that this is an even better deal than it was in the eighties. GURPS Autoduel - $10.50 in 1987, $20 today. Running the inflation calculator, we see that $10.50 in 1987 dollars is the equivalent of about $24 today. Another bargain!We could run through every single older title and compare the prices to today, but this snapshot should give you a clearer understanding of why we cannot simply expect prices from our youth to be relevant or appropriate today. Unless you've got a product that sells in the millions – I'm looking at you, Hot Wheels, and your incredible pricing – we have to accept that things simply cost more now. That's why I like to turn to inflation calculators every now and then – to remind myself that $10 when I was 19 is not the same as $10 when I am now 49!

P.S. And don't get me started on Dungeons & Dragons prices! In my day, we paid way less than $50 for a Player's Handbook ! Of course, $50 today would be the equivalent of $117 in 1987 dollars, but who wants to face the reality of inflation? Not me!

September 24, 2021: Crowdfunding Focus: Fat Dragon's Shadowgrove With Working Traps!

Here's an especially nice terrain Kickstarter from Fat Dragon Games.

Shadowgrove is a printable project; when you support, you get the STL files to let you create as much terrain as you want. It has two components: very detailed modular forest terrain, with rivers, hills, trees, and much more, and dungeon pieces with working clockwork-mechanism traps. Also floors and doors and so on, of course, but the traps. They are wonderful. You turn a key and out comes a blade, or a saw, or whatever – for real!

The campaign is already well into stretch-goal territory; one of the goals already reached is a really sweet little rotating room.

The models print without supports and are optimized for FDM 3D printers.

September 23, 2021: Today On Kickstarter: Random Fun Generator 2

Later today, we will launch the Random Fun Generator 2 campaign on Kickstarter and, with your support, bring a second book of family dice games to tables everywhere! 

This latest book features over 20 new dice games – no repeats! – and is offered in the project in both print and PDF. As with last year's project, we also have several stretch goals planned, and once again the stretch goals are only applicable to the $35 and higher reward levels. We've prepared more eligible rewards this time around, but as always we recommend backing the project early for the widest possible selection of choices. When reward levels are limited, there may come a time over the next week when your preferred reward is no longer available.

For those of you who missed out on last year's campaign, we will also offer copies of the Random Fun Generator retail edition in the campaign. The retail edition is a boxed set with a saddle-stitched book and twenty 12mm six-sided dice, making it a grab 'n play set: just add pencils, paper, and friends!

September 21, 2021: Possible Outages For The Holidays

Most years, at this time, we would be scrambling to make sure we had our holiday inventory needs under control so that we would be able to meet the demand for our hottest sellers. This year, thanks to the impact the global pandemic has had on manufacturing and shipping, we're forced to admit that we may simply be out of several titles by the end of the year.

To better help everyone prepare for the holiday season, our business office created this listing of titles that will be potentially gone by December 31, 2021. The list is ordered from most likely to evaporate to least likely to vanish, and a number of these are already in the reprint queue. If we're lucky, we'll receive shipments in time that most of the items here don't disappear before the holiday season, but there are no guarantees in today's world.
