September 10, 2021: Slippery Slopes and News of Note!
Huzzah! I finished the first draft of my pitch for the Dark Matter miniseries. I spent a couple of hours sourcing images to incorporate into the document, will take the weekend to review and polish, then send Jay’s way on Monday. I’ll eventually post it here on this blog for you all to check out before we go out with it. Ideally, I’d love to have an actor, maybe even a cast member, record an audio version of the pitch and then hire an editor to assemble visuals drawn from the original series.
It’s coming together, slowly but surely…
It really struck home tonight while I was catching up on some of the analysts I follow They either referred to it in the most opaque and roundabout ways or, in some cases, used nonsense substitute words.
Honestly. WTF?!

Akemi recommended I pick up the pace of my hot sauce use because, at year's end, she'll be throwing out any expired bottles. Jokes on her though because hot sauce never expires. Right? RIGHT?!!
— Joseph Mallozzi (@BaronDestructo) September 9, 2021
Sometimes, when I complain of stomach pain after using my hot sauces, she’ll be like: “See! It’s gone bad!” to which I rightly point out: “It’s hot sauce. That’s how you know it’s working!”

September 7, 2021: Projects, Soups and Dogs, and Yes/No!
Yatta! Pilot outline completed. It clocks in at a robust 23 pages, but since it’s the pilot, I wanted to include some nuance and detail to the characters, their interactions, and the myriad storylines. It’s dynamic, character driven, and does a nice job of introducing the world and its colorful players.
With that done, I switch gears to review my proposal for that action-adventure series in advance of Thursday pitch-meeting-that-really-isn’t-a-pitch-meeting-but-more-of-a-walk-thru zoom chat. There’s a lot of humor in this one which always makes the telling so much easier.
My video contribution that verbal pitch I agonized over last weekend has apparently received the thumbs up from the rest of the team and they are now at work, assembling and editing. Looking forward to checking out the final product!
With illustrator Henry Fong’s brilliant work on Project F complete, I impatiently await that final round of notes that will allow me to polish and complete the package – pilot and series overview. And, of course, the sooner we complete the package, the sooner we can reach out to some of the Kpop talent on my short list. Like every facet of pre-production everyone, I’m sure, will have their opinion – but I’m laser-focused on collaborating with talent that: 1) Is stylistically suited to the series, 2) Has a deep enough discography and 3) Can move the needle both in South Korea and internationally. As I said, I have a few targets at the top of my list and it would be an absolute nightmare if I don’t land them.
Also awaiting word on our pitched reimagining of that classic SF series. There’s only one possible for home this project so this either flies or fails.
Still working on the pitch for that Dark Matter miniseries. Was distracted by a few other things but almost done. Hoping to send Jay’s way before month’s end.
Sadly, things have gone quiet on the TimEscape front. I am incredibly frustrated because the project, and the two scripts, are a lot of fun and, I have no doubt, would find a passionate fan base. Going to talk to my partners on this one about next steps. I’m thinking either go the comic book route so that, at the very least, I’ll be able to tell my story. OR, just publish the overview and scripts online for your perusal.

September 5, 2021: Suji Sunday!
Is she looking whiter to you? I feel like, a year from now, we’ll be nicknaming her Snow White.
In the morning, she wakes up early and barks and barks until we feed her breakfast. Then, she barks and barks until we take her out. Then, she barks and barks for her afternoon walk at 2:00 p.m. She barks and barks at 3:30 p.m. in anticipation of breakfast, then barks and barks again at 7:30 p.m. in expectation of her final walk of the day. Finally, she’ll start barking at 8:00 p.m. until we put her to bed with a treat. And I suspect there’s going to be a whole lot more barking when daylight savings time ends in November.
Daddy-daughter day.
Unimpressed with the flowers.
Clearly someone in need of a sleep mask.

September 4, 2021: Hurray for bourbon!
Spending half my afternoon trying to nail down this recorded pitch, and the second half of my afternoon drinking bourbon, trying to nail down this recorded pitch. I fucking hate pitching. It's the equivalent of judging a chef's culinary skills by the layout of their cookbook.
— Joseph Mallozzi (@BaronDestructo) September 4, 2021
I honestly hate it. I fucking hate it. I”ve often said that writers must master three skills in this industry: generating ideas, pitching, and, oh yeah, actual writing. The maddening thing is that the system is weighted towards those who can pitch over those who can actually deliver on the page. Positively mediocre writers can do very well if they are great salespeople. Conversely, the greatest of writers can languish in relative obscurity if they can’t pitch. When all is said and done, I’m perfectly fine at pitching provided I have proper prep, but my strength lies, without a doubt, in the actual writing!

Yesterday, we received the final art work for “Project F” from illustrator Henry Fong. The absolutely stunning pieces included character designs, a detailed design of The Citadel including its Embarkation Chamber, Second World near future Gangnam, and Third World far future New York. Regarding the character designs, I absolutely love his renditions of Reza, Berniece, and Captain Dran, but the adjusted designs on Roosen and Mouse hold a special place in my heart. I am dying to show them off but, for the time being at least, have to sit on them while we finalize the pitch deck. I’m going to re-read the overview and pilot and consider some changes ahead of the notes for the final polish. A business strategy meeting will follow next week after which we should have a chat about attaching talent to the project. I have wish-list but really have my heart set on a few k-pop groups, and one in particular.
Closed the deal on that new pilot earlier this week and am about halfway through the fairly detailed outline. This script is going to be a blast to write.
Sundry other projects in various stages including the pitch for that Dark Matter miniseries. Just two more character write-ups and the narrative summary to go!
My Korean studies continue apace. I can now order beer, tell you if something is delicious or not, and ask you to meet me at the department store. My Japanese refresher is also coming along nicely and I hope to complete all three levels ahead of my next trip to Japan. Could Tokyo 2022 be in the cards?

September 2, 2021: Read between the tweet lines!
So, came across the following video the other day. Dr. John Campbell has been offering terrific science-based updates on the pandemic since its beginnings – and this latest is pretty significant.
If he is right, and the experts are resigned to Covid becoming endemic, then what does that mean for vaccine passports or mask mandates for that matter? Honest question. I’m double vaccinated and wear a mask indoors in public settings, but if they’re giving up on attempting to control the virus, how will this shape public policy?
