Came across this article the other day:

Why Was Dark Matter Cancelled and Can It Be Revived?

The answer to the latter is, theoretically, yes!  I’m about halfway through my pitch for the six-part miniseries.  Once complete, I’ll discuss with Jay best course of action.  We could assemble a proper pitch deck complete with visuals drawn from the series, but I kind of like the idea of hiring an editor to pull clips from the show to accompany a recorded audio pitch.

Hey, Stargate fans…

August 29, 2021: Suji Sunday!

Screen-shot-2021-08-29-at-30518-pm

The look on Suji’s face this afternoon when someone on facebook reported that she had crossed the rainbow bridge.  She was, of course, immediately worried about how this would affect tonight’s dinner schedule.

August 29, 2021: A photo-tastic blog entry!

I’ve been remiss in uploading photos of late, so I’m making up said lengthy omission with this photo-tastic entry…

Pxl_20210822_133912836

The recent haul from Akemi’s patio garden.  Not pictured: tomatoes, chives, and zucchini.

Pxl_20210822_213634001portrait

Akemi came across an old cookbook and became inspired to try out some new (old) recipes.  A killer tiramisu that I topped with Royce milk chocolate.

Hanging out on the deck for as long as it took Akemi to take this picture.

Disappointed to discover my favorite ice cream place closed on Monday.

Substitute gelato – ice cream with pistachio cream.  Good, but not the boozy ice cream I was hoping for.

Akemi’s ceramic haul arrived from Japan.  And there was much rejoicing!

I, on the other hand, am going wild with the block function.  I’m now up to a little over 1k blocked accounts.  Occasionally, to unwind, I will click on a trending topic, zero in on the idiot comments, and block.  It’s very cathartic.

August 27, 2021: Fried Chicken Frenzy!

It was an intensive two year program.
Presently pursuing my doctorate degree.

— Joseph Mallozzi (@BaronDestructo) August 27, 2021

Today, I made the trek down to Toronto’s Parkdale district so that I could check out Dave’s Hot Chicken along with fellow fried chicken aficionado (and writer-producer) Alex Levine.   The menu is fairly straightforward: chicken tenders or sliders (OR a one of each!), fries, slaw, fountain drinks and milkshakes.  But there’s a little more variety in the spice options that go NO SPICE, LITE MILD, MILD, MEDIUM, HOT EXTRA HOT, and REAPER.  What discerning palette is able to differentiate between Lite Mild and Milk, I wondered – on my way to ordering the double sliders, one HOT, the other EXTRA HOT.  I was dissuaded from going full REAPER by the kitchen staff who informed me I would have to sign a waiver when ordering.

Img_1127

I was expecting the sliders to be mini in size, but each turned out to be the size of a regular burger.  I decided I would eat one and bring the second home for dinner.  In the end, I ended up eating both.

The hot was HOT.  And the extra hot was EXTRA HOT, as advertised.  But, in hindsight, I think I should have hazarded the REAPER.  The weirdly thick chocolate milkshake I ordered was the perfect cooling compliment.  (Note: I’m a sucker for milkshakes, if you’re wondering what to get me for my birthday in October).

On my 50 minute trek back home, I stopped off at a small Portuguese bakery (Bom Dio) to try their pistachio mousse cake –

Img_1131-copy

Note: I’m also a huge fan of pistachio everything: mousse, cakes, lattes, pastes, chocolates.  Well, everything except actual pistachios.

August 26, 2021: The fifth SG-1 member that never was!

Had a great time chatting with Brad Wright today on his Companion podcast, chatting about the good old days on Stargate.  We discussed favorite episodes, writers’ room dynamics, and the latest on that fourth Stargate series.  Will let you know when it drops.

And, since we’re on the topic, check out the cool concept art from the Stargate vault – and the very first episode I ever wrote…

1season4ep9-10 2season4ep9-10 3season4ep9-10 4season4ep9-10

I loved that alien design that, to the best of my recollection, never made it to screen in Scorched Earth.  I nicknamed him Monty and pitched hi as a potential fifth member of SG-1 who would spend most of the time staggering around aimlessly, muttering alien gibberish while the rest of the team was getting shit done.

Teal’c: This passage would appear to be inaccessible.

Carter: It’s shielded by an oscillating energy field.

Daniel: The glyphs are Mayan in origin.  If we can figure out this puzzle…

O’Neil: I’ve always been more of a crossword guy.  Monty, what do you think?

Monty: Agoopbagharrgharojoooooowaaagabba!

Today’s Yes/No…

Flamin' Hot Mountain Dew? Yes/Nohttps://t.co/0SOgVDTKlo

— Joseph Mallozzi (@BaronDestructo) August 26, 2021

If I don’t drink regular Mountain Dew, you can be damn share I won’t be drinking the Flamin’ Hot variety.

Oooh, just go the latest batch of visuals for that kpop-themed SF series from illustrator Henry Fong.  The character designs are fantastic and the Embarkation Room is absolutely beautiful!  We get finals next week after which I polish the bible and pilot and then…dare I say it?…smoooooth sailing!

August 24, 2021: Round and round the projects go! Which one will land, nobody knows!

Best ice cream flavor-inspired dog name = Spumoni

— Joseph Mallozzi (@BaronDestructo) August 24, 2021

No doubt here.  Tomorrow, I’ll be running down the Top 3 cheese-inspired dog names in the categories of Hard Cheeses, Semi Hard Cheeses, Semi Soft Cheeses, and Soft Cheeses.

I am endlessly amazed by this business, the way certain projects disappear, sometimes for weeks or months from my radar, occasionally forever, while others pop up, seemingly out of nowhere, to take center stage.

Project F, that sci-fi/kpop hybrid is coming along nicely.  Production illustrator Henry Fong (Dark Matter, IT, The Boys, Cowboy Bebop) has delivered some exceptional artwork to accompany the pitch deck – Near Future Gangnam, Far Future Earth, character designs and, of course, The Citadel in all of its glory.  I’ll be doing one more pass on the overview and pilot before we start talking to some management companies in Seoul regarding talent.  I really, really, REALLY have my heart set on one of two groups whose musical stylings would be a perfect fit for this show – but we’ll have to wait for everyone to weigh in with their thoughts.

Waiting to close a deal on that pilot script as well as a couple of deal memos regarding my participation in a couple of other projects, both based on pre-existing materials (a web series and that epic comic book series).

Still waiting to hear back on our revised pitch for that classic sci-fi series.  In a perfect world, we get the green light to proceed to development and I’ll have to keep its identity a secret for a little while longer.  If, on the other hand, its a pass, I’ll let you all know the one that got away and we’ll be able to commiserate together.

Also, out of the blue, some promising developments on an original series I pitched.  This one is more cloak and dagger with, yes, some sci-fi elements and, best of all, a healthy dose of humor.  We’ve scheduled a zoom call for the week of September 6th so I can take the capo di tutti capi through my vision for the show.

I’m ten lessons into my Korean language course and I can already ask you out to dinner, order a couple of colas, and arrange a meeting at a department store.  By this time next year, I’ll be able to understand all of the lyrics to Dreamcatcher’s entire discography(!).

Today’s Yes/No…

Doughnut Waffles? Yes/Nohttps://t.co/wDAwnUCFdX

August 23, 2021: Wrapping up my podcasting forays in fine style!

Well, this is exciting.  Later this week, I’ll be joining Brad Wright on his The Companion podcast for a trip down Stargate memory lane. What long-buried remembrances will be unearthed?  What forgotten secrets revealed?  Got a question for either of us, head on over to the link and leave us a message…

Recording the next episode of my podcast on @TheCompanionApp this week with the ine and only Joe @BaronDestructo Mallozzi!

Whew.  Busy day today writing, researching, studying, lunching, and blocking.  With regard to the latter, I average about 50 twitter accounts a day which puts my block list at well over 2k to date.  What gets you cleansed from my timelines?  Being rude, hypocritical, provoking, patronizing, holier than thou, insufferably demonstrably earnest, or a purveyor of specific annoying memes.  That’s it!

Today’s Yes/No…

Cheesy Potato Disks? Yes/No https://t.co/qkTol2onIu

— Joseph Mallozzi (@BaronDestructo) August 23, 2021

My favorite boozy ice cream shop was closed today, so I ended up checking out the new gelato kid on the block.  Although its offerings are fewer and less inspired, they are prepared in a unique method akin to an espresso machine, one that sees staff insert specific capsule flavors into speciality machines that extrude chilled, ready-to-eat servings in seconds.  On the one hand, its a very eco-friendly process.  On the other hand, no boozy flavors.

Me: So, how much do those machines go for?

Owner: They’re not for sale.

Me: No, I’m not looking to buy.  I was just curious how much one of those machines run for.  Say, ballpark.

Owner: A lot.

Uh, okay.

What are the most divisive movies in recent memory?

— Joseph Mallozzi (@BaronDestructo) August 21, 2021

I will watch the most popular responses so that I can offer up my own equal divisive opinion.  So let’s hear ’em!

It’s hard to believe we’re deep into August and fall is almost upon us.  We’ve regained a certain degree of normalcy here in Toronto, but I wonder how things will progress once the temperature drops.  Hopefully the worst is behind us but, just in case, I urge you all to stock up…just in case.  Last I checked, there was still plenty of toilet paper at the local supermarket.
