Dark Matter miniseries pitch – The Characters (Part 1)

Two-dark-matter-tv-series-syfy-40743204-740-1107

TWO: She was at one time the Raza’s fearsome commander, but her priorities have since changed.  Now a mother to a five year old girl, she has made her daughter a priority, abandoning her space-faring lifestyle in favor of a quiet existence on a remote world.  But with the looming encroachment of the alien invaders, she rejoins her former crew-mates for one final battle, and the promise of a peaceful future for her young daughter.

Screen-shot-2021-09-10-at-30748-pm

THREE:   Separated from the woman he loves for over three years, he has been on an unending mission to find her.  And he will, eventually – only to discover she has changed in unexpected ways.  Once a caring young woman stricken with an incurable disease, she has abandoned her human body in favor of a synthetic android form.  But in so doing, she has inadvertently set them both on a dangerous and ultimately tragic path.

RYO ISHIDA:  The amnesiac former crew member once known as FOUR has forged a new path since reacquiring his old memories and identity as Ryo Ishida, Emperor of Zairon.  His throne usurped, his homeworld now in shambles, he is a fugitive who roams the space ways  like a wandering ronin, seeking one last shot at redemption.

(I’ll post the second part on Monday).

Dark Matter miniseries pitch – The World

Dm_313-theblackshipsfinale

THE WORLD

Our world is our galaxy, 300 years into the future.  Corporations have expanded their reach far beyond Earth, colonizing other planets to exploit their resources.  The only check on their cosmic dominance is the Galactic Authority, a policing force that ensures law and order prevail from Terra Prime to the Outer Colonies.  But an alien invasion has disrupted this two centuries long balance of power.  Dozens of extraterrestrial Black Ships have run roughshod over colonized space, attacking human outposts, replenishing their massive vessels by feeding on suns, accelerating the deaths of stars and the extinction of surrounding worlds.

Humanity has been waging a losing battle against the Black Ships.  But finally, after three long years, they possess the means to defeating the alien enemy.  And the key to victory lies with a long lost member of the former Raza crew.

Tomorrow, we check in with some of our crew and find out what they’ve been up to.

Dark Matter miniseries pitch – Teaser

Dm_306-razaftl

THE TEASE

We OPEN ON the stillness of space. Suddenly, a crackle of energy and ship drops out of FTL (Faster Than Light).

Fans of the show will recognize it as The Raza, our hero ship. But for newbies who may not be familiar with what has come before – that’s alright. No research required. Our story has you covered. We CUT TO:

The bridge of the ship where we discover the ship’s commander, FIVE, a resolute young women in her mid-twenties flanked by a quirky female Android. They are waiting for… someone. Soon, that someone arrives –

In the form of five destroyer class corporate ships belonging to the Mikkei Combine under the command of their Commander Truffault. The Android immediately relays a set of coordinates and –

The six corporate ships take up positions. Then, as one, they fire their concentrated energy weapons towards a specific area of space. And, as they do, the sustained energy appears to have an effect – creating a breech in space-time, tiny at first, then growing exponentially.

On board the Raza, the Android reports. She is picking up an anomalous reading from the heart of the space-time window. FIVE holds her breath.

Suddenly, two alien ships drop out of FTL and immediately fire on the corporate vessels. The Raza runs interference, engaging the attackers in a spectacular dog fight, allowing the corporate ships to continue to concentrate their fire on the growing singularity until –

A small shuttle, the Marauder, emerges from the space-time breech. The corporate ships, their work complete, immediately jump to FTL, leaving the Raza to take on the alien vessels, holding them off just long enough for the shuttle to dock with them. The Raza escapes, jumping to FTL and, as it does, we CUT TO:

Inside the ship where FIVE and the Android are reunited with a long-lost crew member SIX, who has been trapped on the other side of that breech for over three years. It’s a bittersweet reunion because a lot has changed since he went away…

More to come tomorrow!

Dark Matter miniseries pitch – The Intro

THE SHOW

Are people born bad or are they products of their environment?  Is redemption possible for everyone?  Does remembering your past make you more or less doomed to repeat it?  These were just a few of the questions at the heart of Dark Matter, a science fiction series that ran for three seasons, from 2015 to 2017 on SyFy and Netflix. Over the course of its three year run and well beyond, it has garnered a passionate and growing fanbase by exploring themes related to personal responsibility, environmental influences, and redemption through the adventures of the crew of The Raza, six individuals who awaken from stasis with no memories of who they are or how they got on board.  They quickly discover that they are criminals – the worst of the worst – and immediately seek to forge a new path for themselves.  But as the mysteries related to their respective backstories unfurl, they discover that escaping the past isn’t as simple as it would seem.

Our story was planned as a five season arc, each year the equivalent to an installment in a book series with its dedicated beginning, middle, and end.  Our first season begins with the discovery that our crew are wanted criminals, gradually reveals their respective backstories and ends with a betrayal that sees them all hauled off to prison.  Our second sees the crew launch a daring escape from the Hyperion-8 Super Max after which they launch a concerted effort to put the past behind them and be better people – only to have their efforts blow up spectacularly in their faces (quite literally with the destruction of the EOS-7 space station they were seeking to protect).  Our third season pits our crew against a former ally turned Big Bad, testing their bonds as well as their capacity for compassion and forgiveness.

The season 3 finale ushered in a new threat – an alien invasion that would have been the focus of the show’s fourth season.  We are proposing a six episode miniseries that would offer the existing fanbase, and new viewers alike, a self-contained story that sees our crew reassemble after a three year absence to take down this otherworldly threat.  As a standalone story, this miniseries would offer a satisfying conclusion to the adventures of The Raza while, at the same time, leaving the door open for a second miniseries that would cover the show’s planned fifth and final season.

***

That’s the game plan.  I’ll upload the rest of the pitch in the coming days.

In the meantime, might I interest you in some pretzel beer?

September 13, 2021: Projects Piling Up, Ramen Soda, and Stargate!

Alrighty!  Sent the Dark Matter miniseries pitch Jay’s way this morning and included some ideas on how we can proceed.  I await word on next steps.  In the meantime, I’m thinking of uploading the written pitch for you all to check out and find out what the plan is. Interested?

Got an update on one project, awaiting input on three more, getting ready to go out with two, and need to get some work done on another while the three others remain in a holding pattern.  I can’t even begin to imagine how great it would be like to concentrate on a single project,  How wild would that be?!

$BTU over Brady, $NOC over Nuk, $GD and $EPD over the Ravens D!

The fantasy football season kicked off on Thursday and I am positively indifferent, this despite the fact that my Snow Monkeys are playing in three leagues.  My enthusiasm, formerly reserved for player stats, waiver wire prospects, and analyst projections has now shifted to valuation metrics, chart patterns, and analyst projections.  It’s $BTU over Brady, $NOC over Nuk, $GD and $EPD over the Ravens D.  The funds for my annual subscriptions to DAZN and Fantasypros have been redirected to GuruFocus and Fastgraphs.  And like those deceased investors who outperform their  peers on the strength of their ability to hold for the long haul, I’m going to find out if a similar disinterested laissez-faire approach will finally yield a long overdue championship.

Wish me luck – because when it comes to fantasy football, that’s really all it comes down to!

On the heels of yesterday’s blog reference to the Dark Mater miniseries and my idea to possibly have a cast member record an audio version pitch, no less than four former cast members reached out to volunteer their services.  And I have no doubt hat if and when the others get around to reading the blog entry, they’ll be equally game.  I am truly touched.  Every one of them was a joy to work with and I do miss them.

Came across this on the Stargate subreddit via user @thelegoroom…

September 10, 2021: Slippery Slopes and News of Note!

Darkmatterseason3

Huzzah!  I finished the first draft of my pitch for the Dark Matter miniseries.  I spent a couple of hours sourcing images to incorporate into the document, will take the weekend to review and polish, then send Jay’s way on Monday.  I’ll eventually post it here on this blog for you all to check out before we go out with it.  Ideally, I’d love to have an actor, maybe even a cast member, record an audio version of the pitch and then hire an editor to assemble visuals drawn from the original series.

It’s coming together, slowly but surely…

It really struck home tonight while I was catching up on some of the analysts I follow They either referred to it in the most opaque and roundabout ways or, in some cases, used nonsense substitute words.
Honestly. WTF?!
