September 28, 2021: The Tuesday Special!

A little more progress today on the pilot.  Not quite as prolific today, but the day isn’t done yet – and I am ahead of schedule.

Sent off the Dark Matter pitch to a possible home – as well as the pitch for a Hitcockian limited series.

Finished Squid Game last night.  Guessed the first twist, but the second was unexpected.  Absolutely loved episode 6 – and, uh, didn’t episode 7 with all of the English actors who delivered their OTT lines like they were improvising dialogue.  Oof.  As for the ending…your mileage will undoubtedly vary.

So what should I watch next?  No network.  No comedies.  No ponderously pedantic PSA-style “powerful message” shows.

Today’s Yes/No…

September 27, 2021: Chugging along…

I find I get more done when I have other things to do.  Chiefly, this pilot I’m writing.  I completed the teaser and first act today – two days ahead of schedule – but also find time to have some early discussions on the Dark Matter miniseries, completed a pass on the SF/K-pop series and sent it – and the artwork – to our pitch designer, and have started fleshing out the pitch for another project.  Also, read two volumes of the Tokyo Revengers manga (as the anime has left me hanging) and am about halfway through Squid Game (I think I’ve already guessed the twist, but it’s very enjoyable nevertheless).

September 24, 2021: Weekend Progress!

When I sit down to write a pilot, I always set some very makable goals for myself.  For instance, I’ll set aside an entire weekend to complete the teaser, then give myself until Friday to complete the first two acts.  I’ll dedicate the next weekend to the third act, then the following weekdays to acts four and five.  I’ll take the weekend to review and – voila!  A first draft!  Of course, more often than not, I do get ahead of schedule, banking pages.  This doesn’t shorten the schedule but gives me the luxury of time on the back-end.  And it’s all made infinitely easier when I’m working off a very detailed outline that has already assumed much of the heavy narrative lifting.  So today, for instance, I started work on a new pilot.  I’ve gave myself the weekend to write the teaser but, thanks to the fairly comprehensive outline, I’ve already completed it and forged ahead, three scenes deep into Act 1.  I’m going to head down to the gym, do my evening run, then come back and finish one more scene that should put me at an impressive ten page count for the day and maybe fifteen on the weekend.

It’s been a while since I’ve written a pilot, but it’s like riding a bike – you never forget and before you know it, you’re zipping along until, maybe, the handlebars come off in your hands or you arrive at your destination only to discover it closed down last month and you made the trip for nothing.

You know if this works out, I may just sub-contract my script-work to an A.I. so that I can devote more time to stock research.

I wonder how good they are at pitching?

September 23, 2021: Remembering Willie Garson

4c3b096bf24df7a23d631cfa2c0d6cfa-stargate-sg-stargate-atlantis

As many of you have no doubt heard, actor Willie Garson passed away at the all too young age of 57.  Most media cite his work on shows like Sex and the City and White Collar, but of course Stargate fans fondly remember him for his portrayal of the Martin Lloyd, the lovable fugitive alien-turned-television producer on Stargate: SG-1.  Although he only appeared in three episodes of the series, they were milestone episodes and among my very favorites, in large part due to Willie’s performance which was at turns humorous and heartfelt.  He made us laugh but, more importantly, made us care about his character.

I never had the opportunity to interact with Willie personally as I spent most of my days up in my office writing, rarely venturing to set where production rested in infinitely more capable hands, but I heard nothing but great things about him and his overwhelmingly positive spirit.  I do recall that Richard Dean Anderson got along famously with Willie and this was noteworthy because, while Rick generally got on with everyone, it was very rare that a guest star would have him in stitches to the point that they were having trouble getting through scenes amid all of the laughter.

A wonderful actor and a wonderful human being gone way too soon.

Dark Matter – The Miniseries (summary)

Darkmatterseason3-1

THE MINISERIES

It’s been three long years since the alien incursion that has wrought havoc over the galaxy.  Billions of lives have been lost, countless worlds destroyed.  Finally, however, salvation presents itself in the form of an unfathomable piece of technology, couriered from an alien reality by a long-lost former member of the Raza crew. IT holds the key to turning the tables on the other-worldly invaders, but it is also only one piece of an intricate puzzle.  To pull this off, our heroes will have to  track down and reunite their departed crew members, ally themselves with the Galactic Authority, duplicitous corporations, and a  faction of rebel androids committed to overthrowing the anthroparchy – human rule.  They’ll forge new alliances, suffer surprising betrayals, and risk it all for one final shot at redemption.
