Just Feed!

This is me. I know, bleh. Not my best shot. I'm not that photogenic to begin with, but here I'm really looking grand.

So why show off this dandy pic, you ask.

Because this is what I do every single day. Get up, put on three or four layers, and go outside to feed the horde, er herd. Eleven horses, six dogs, nine ducks and one outdoor cat. Plus the flock of wild birds that hovers for a bite of dropped grain.

Today I don't feel like it. I have a toothache that's pressing into an ear ache. I really...

Waiting for the other shoe

This is an achy Monday. My kids visiting from up north have left for home after a great weekend here at the Winter House. The kids I haven’t seen in too long seem very far away. I watched the season finale of Downton Abbey last night and am still disturbed by it.           I’ve written today, brooding lyrics in the song that is a difficult manuscript. “I’m waiting,” says Carol in the story, “for the other shoe to d...

Down the Drain

For the last three days I have felt so drained. I know why. Happens to me every month. All I've wanted to do was veg out on the couch under a blanket. So what did I do? I vegged out on the couch with my laptop in my lap. And I worked on my story. I didn't feel like it, but I did it anyway.

I'm proud of myself. I accomplished some of what I set out to do. Now the story is finished and ready to be polished. I think I'll start on that Monday. I should have my energy back by then.

To Love Again

I'm ready to fall in love again. There I said it. And it's not that I'm unhappy in my marriage. Still love, love my husband.

But, I'm ready to fall in love with a new project.

See, as my little loyal following will know, I've spent the past three-almost four--years obsessed with my boy Bix. And now that he's out in the slush piles and on request, I have to let him go for the time-being. And even though I 'm sure there are more Bix stories to be told, I don't want to write something until I have...

You Have to Take Chances

coming in to port in HondurasWe all have our little comfort zones - whether it's sitting on our couch watching old episodes of Seinfeld or taking walks along the same trails in our city parks. Those comfort zones are good. They're important. When I'm feeling down, nothing is better than an episode of Seinfeld and my comfy blanket to cheer back up. When I need to work out a plot problem, I can walk a trail in our park - even the rutted sections - without paying attention to the trail at all. A...

Cover Me

Usually a cover reveal is such a big deal.Like opening a gift. This morning, a friend put a cover for her new book on one of my writer's loops. She hates it. Most of the writers on the loop do, too.

When I was an unpublished writer, I always thought hating a cover was kind of a prima donna act. You know, the writer was throwing a fit for no reason. If you were lucky enough to get a cover, deal with it.

I couldn't have been more wrong.

Awhile back, I contracted my book, Vaquero. It is a tale of a...

          I’m a happy perso...

I’m a happy person, a Pollyanna who’s never seen a half-empty glass in her life. Even though I know too much of anything is annoying, I like being positive nearly all the time. It is, I suppose, my natural state of mind.           Speaking of natural states of mind, I’m also a creature of routine. Although I don’t think I’m anywhere near obsessive-compulsive, I do like a schedule. It’s fun to break away from—...

The "It" Girl

Let me tell you a story my mom told me. While mom was in the hospital, an older nurse with a sour look on her face came into her room and announced she was going to give mom a sponge bath. She wrapped a washrag around her hand, jerked my mom's head back, and started scrubbing her face. My mom started laughing and couldn't stop. The nurse tossed the washrag down and asked my mother, "What's so funny?" Between fits of laughter my mom says, "You're the most hateful woman I've ever met." For the...
