Let It Rain!
Just like the rest of the country - with the possible exception of the Pacific Northwest, I'll let Margie weigh in on that - it's bee really, really, extraordinarily dry around here this summer. Since about mid-April, actually. Yes, we've had a thunderstorm or two, but normally the rain is much more plentiful, the temperatures are more moderate and ... well, the dog-days of summer are more like 85-degree warm-waves than 100-degree heat waves.
It's been between 93 and 100 for almost a week now....

Bringing Sexy Back
What's sexy to you? I've talked many times about a steady kind of love that my husband brings...fixing things, shoeing horses, hauling hay, working out of state. But today, I'm more interested in talking about our heroes. Romance heroes. As everyone knows, my personal faves are cowboys.
I love ranching cowboys, and have written several. But rodeo cowboys are a whole other animal. There's something about a guy who straps himself to a two-ton animal bent on tossing him of...

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...
Do you remember in the movie City Slickers when the men on the cattle drive discussed their best and worst days? I was thinking of that this weekend, when my house was full-to-bursting with my favorite people. My best days are all the ones when I see those favorite people and they are healthy and happy. It sounds—and is, I guess—pretty sappy, but there’s nothing like dancing in the kitchen with your grandkids. Then there was the day a few months back that I got two emails within minutes of ea...

Show Me The Funny
Shaun is taking a brief hiatus this summer so we’re going to try out a new Friday feature.
Show me Friday
This week we’d love to see the funny. In ten sentences or less, make us laugh. Let’s end the week with a smile.
Here’s mine from early in SON OF A HIRED GUN: “Hey, who’s that hot number?” Tack approaches the bike rack, his eyes glued to Mom’s backside.
“That’s Ms. Darwin, the new aerobics/yoga teacher.” Ryan fills him in. “And Bixby’s mother.”
“She’s a total...

Bring On the Spunk!
I should probably sub-title this post 'My Favorite Heroine(s)', but then I might leave one off the list and she might leave the pages of her books to haunt me through the night like Carrie's vamp from last week...so I'll stick with the main title, thankyouverymuch...There have been several heroines I've identified with over my lifetime, but two that are very special to me -- that I sometimes still feel are part of me.
This first is Laura Ingalls Wilder. When I was little I loved those boo...

Two for a Lady
Last time we showcased our hero in two sentences. Can you do it for your heroine? I'd love to see you show your heroine in two sentences. Her determination. Her humor. Her loyalty. Anything. Mine is from Wild Horses.
Wouldn't Martin be horrified to know she was the one he depended on now? But no matter how much he'd rejected her in the past, she couldn't just leave her brother to die.
Your turn...

Love, My Favorite Thing
I'm in love with love. Most types of love. Not all consuming self love, or the love of material things. But the kind of love that counts.
The Spark:
Okay, this isn't really love, but it's a start. While in the grocery store, I saw my teenaged cashier making eyes at the bag boy. It was a look I'd seen her give him a thousand times. He never seemed to notice. I wondered if she was ever going to get up the nerve to talk to him. Th...

My Favorite Choice
You’d think since it was my idea to feature favorites this week that I would’ve actually had a plan. Yep, you’d think that. Doesn’t make it so. I spent yesterday and this morning trying to come up with an original favorite.
So, as the Today show waned into the 9:30 hour and I’d seen everything I wanted to see, I started surfing and came upon this little gem,.Romancing the Stone
This has got to be my favorite writerly movie--not to mention one of my all-time favorite movies on it's own.I s...

My Favorite Holiday!
We're talking about favorite things this week at WordWranglers. So I had to join in with my favorite holiday. Now, for many people, Christmas or Valentine's Day are favorites. Nothing against those particular days - they're among my favorite holidays - but for me the best holiday is the Fourth of July. America's Independence Day.What do I love about the 4th of July? I like that it's not cold - cold does have its place but give me a warm (okay, HOT) holiday any time. Heat makes holiday, for me...
