'Cos ebooks rock

It's Read an Ebook Week! And I'm celebrating by popping in for a chat at Samhaincafe with fellow author Josh Lanyon!

Here's my biased view of ebooks.

It doesn't seem to me that paper books are going away anytime soon, but I know that I personally have had a huge shift in my preference for electronic versus physical over the last couple of years. I blame the public library, physics, and my iPod. See, I used to buy books that I liked. I even spent a lot of money on them. And then when I started w...

pins, resin and fake eyeballs

The road to the taxidermist's house was much scarier than anything in that basement. Even the walleye.

The taxidermist was very nice! See, you guys didn't need to worry ;-)

Bird feet with pins
These are pheasant's feet. Animals who were recently assembled were pinned so that they'd dry in the correct shape.

animal eyes
The biggest eyes are for an elk. The smallest (black blown glass balls in a baggie just above the elk eyes) are for squirrel.

Squirrel form and turkey feet
The fake parts look creepier than the real parts sometimes. Here's ...

Creatures in all their glory

Last night I went to a lecture on identifying bird calls, figuring that it was 1. Free, 2. Near my house, and 3. Might teach me some interesting fact I could use in a novel.

One of the cool things I found out was that birds that live in fields (near the ground, in grass) have songs and calls that sound more like insects, so a lot of clicking and whirring bird noises are from these types of birds.

I was having a dream where I heard a "chit...chit...chit..." beside me and thought, "Aha! I know wh...

I do prefer my animals alive...

Sleepwalker cover ...but a taxidermist makes for an interesting character!

I've been working on this pair of stories for quite a while now. It started with a visit to a local state park where the ranger station has several dioramas of taxidermied local species. I find stuffed dead animals morbidly fascinating because they never look quite right. And if they are lifelike, they're actually all the creepier. Since the ranger didn't seem too busy I asked her a bunch of questions about the animals--in particular how...

Packing Heat 093: Ready the Red Pen

Preparation and Thought
I'm getting ready for NaNoEdMo — the next step after NaNoWriMo. You know: that 50,000 words of gobbledygook you wrote in November. (I didn't do NaNoWriMo this year, but I do have some shelved novels from prior years.)

The idea behind NaNoEdMo is to commit to putting in a big block of editing time and logging that time weekly. In order to complete NaNoEdMo, you must log 50 hours of editing time over the course of the month.

See www.nanoedmo.net for details. I just s...

Bo-ring

It's funny how telling someone you're a writer seems to make them want to know all about what you write. I wonder why that is? I know that I personally would grill a writer I'd just met because I'm interested in writing, myself. But if I weren't...I don't know, would I be quite as persistent as casual acquaintances seem to be with me?

I think that as an m/m erotica writer, my target audience is really specific. True, you never know who's going to turn out to be into m/m even though you don't e...

Win a copy of Hue, Tint and Shade

Today you can win a copy of Hue, Tint and Shade on Wave's blog.

Wave also just posted a review of Moolah and Moonshine where she says, "This book proved to be the most surprising and I really, really liked it because it was quite different from what I was expecting...I think [Petit Morts:] is one of the best short series I have come across in a long time" Yay! Thanks, Wave!

Val at Obsidianbookshelf.com also reviewed several of the stories this week. She said, "The contradictions that the auth...

Yum Yum, Petit Morts are here!

Just a quickie to say that you can read nice big samples or grab the stories now! (Excuse the state of my navigation bar. It looks lousy on a small monitor on IE and I'll just make it worse if I try to fix it tonight!)
