From the Detroit Free Press: Lions will face Hardy, but they shouldn't

Lions will face Hardy, but they shouldn't

Mitch Albom finds violence on and off

the gridiron

Most football coaches like the occasional fight. They privately encourage a brawl here and there during the preseason, or look the other way when a tiff breaks out in practice. It is seen as a sign of readiness for the edgy, violent aggression that is needed to win on Sundays.

From the Detroit Free Press: It rained, he played and it was free

It rained, he played and it was really free

The esteemed guitar player kept strumming in the rain. His audience was around 30 people, down from the hundreds who had come to see him before the storm hit.

"What else?" he yelled, smiling.

Someone called a song. He began crooning.

"I've got you under my skin,

"I've got you, deep in the heart of me."

The crowd was crunched together, staying dry beneath a concrete overhang. A few feet away, it was pouring - with occasional lightning and ear-splitting thunder - yet the guitar player continued, undaunted.

From the Detroit Free Press: Why is NFL behind TMZ in Rice case?

So now we know who's running the NFL.

It's TMZ.

And if TMZ hadn't aired a second video this week showing Rice, inside the elevator, actually slugging the poor woman into oblivion, the running back would be preparing to rejoin the Baltimore Ravens in a few days, his two-game suspension having been completed.

From the Detroit Free Press: Detroit Tigers' stars shining bright in thick of division race

Before he turned his career to pitching, Joe Nathan played shortstop. “At least half my life,” he would later recall. So on the mound Tuesday night, in the top of the ninth, with “two of the quickest guys in the game” on first and second and Nathan facing the real possibility that the lead and this game and a tie for first place in the AL Central might all slip away, his old infielder’s instincts kicked in.

From the Detroit Free Press: Maybe charity critics deserve ice bucket dump

If you needed proof that the world has grown too cynical, look no further than the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

The idea, essentially, was to challenge people to donate $100 to the ALS Association — or have a bucket of ice water dumped on their heads.

It caught on wildly and virally — as video-based trends often do. Soon Facebook pages were full of ice-dumping clips, and celebrities from LeBron James to George W. Bush to Oprah Winfrey joined the splashees.
