From the Detroit Free Press: Having and hitting kids both issues for Peterson

Adrian Peterson is not the worst man on earth. But I have no sympathy for him. Not after he has been accused of abusing two 4-year-old sons.

When you have two kids the same age, they are either twins, or you were way too busy that year. Turns out the latter is often true of Peterson. The 4-year-olds are from different mothers, neither of whom is his wife. And nearly as disturbing as his tree-branch discipline is this:

Peterson won't say how many kids he has.

#MovieNightwithMitch Do you live in (decent) driving distance from Royal Oak, MI? Do you like movies? Then join me on Wednesday, September 24 for the 8pm showing of "A Walk Among the Tombstones" at the Emagine Entertainment theater complex. I'll be there with my co-host Ken Brown and some friends, and I'm inviting you, my Internet friends, to join me as well. We'll catch a movie, then head across the lobby to the Star Restaurant for more eating...and bowling! We'll all pay our own way, but I'm hoping to make this a monthly tradition--so bring your friends or make new ones, but I'd love to have you join me for a night out. RSVP at http://www.mitchalbom.com/d/moviewithmitch

From the Detroit Free Press: Lions will face Hardy, but they shouldn't

Lions will face Hardy, but they shouldn't

Mitch Albom finds violence on and off

the gridiron

Most football coaches like the occasional fight. They privately encourage a brawl here and there during the preseason, or look the other way when a tiff breaks out in practice. It is seen as a sign of readiness for the edgy, violent aggression that is needed to win on Sundays.

From the Detroit Free Press: It rained, he played and it was free

It rained, he played and it was really free

The esteemed guitar player kept strumming in the rain. His audience was around 30 people, down from the hundreds who had come to see him before the storm hit.

"What else?" he yelled, smiling.

Someone called a song. He began crooning.

"I've got you under my skin,

"I've got you, deep in the heart of me."

The crowd was crunched together, staying dry beneath a concrete overhang. A few feet away, it was pouring - with occasional lightning and ear-splitting thunder - yet the guitar player continued, undaunted.

From the Detroit Free Press: Why is NFL behind TMZ in Rice case?

So now we know who's running the NFL.

It's TMZ.

Had the celebrity website not released the first video of Ray Rice dragging his unconscious then-fianc©e out of an elevator - causing a huge national outcry - who knows what the league might have done or not done?

And if TMZ hadn't aired a second video this week showing Rice, inside the elevator, actually slugging the poor woman into oblivion, the running back would be preparing to rejoin the Baltimore Ravens in a few days, his two-game suspension having been completed.

From the Detroit Free Press: Detroit Tigers' stars shining bright in thick of division race

Before he turned his career to pitching, Joe Nathan played shortstop. “At least half my life,” he would later recall. So on the mound Tuesday night, in the top of the ninth, with “two of the quickest guys in the game” on first and second and Nathan facing the real possibility that the lead and this game and a tie for first place in the AL Central might all slip away, his old infielder’s instincts kicked in.

From the Detroit Free Press: With nimble Matthew Stafford, Lions open fast on beautiful Detroit sports day

Matthew Stafford took off running. In the past, this made you worry. In the past, Stafford hoofing it was a last resort — and how much can you expect from a last resort?
