From the Detroit Free Press: A letter to nation on area code b'day

Dear America:

We just had a birthday. Our 313th. It was a bit of a big deal here, but I am guessing it makes no sense to you. Many things from Detroit do not.

So let me explain. Our 313th was significant because 313 is our area code. Yes. Our area code. It has been since they invented area codes. The whole city of Detroit. Even some adjacent communities, like Dearborn, Gross Pointe and Inkster.

All 313.

It hasn't changed for nearly 70 years. If you had a Detroit phone line during the Korean War, you could still have the same number today.

From the Detroit Free Press: Utash, soccer ref: Results of our rage

Why such anger, I wonder?

On Friday morning, within minutes of perusing the newspaper, I'd read three stories from around our area, all of which left me shaking my head.

The first was the funeral for a beloved soccer referee, killed with one punch from an angry player.

The second was the sentencing of a man who attacked a motorist and, joining many others, beat him senseless.

The third concerned a high school student who poisoned his teacher's coffee.

What united all three stories is that none of them had to happen.

From the Detroit Free Press: How LeBron and Gilbert came to bury the hatchet

How LeBron and Gilbert came to bury the hatchet

You shouldn't be known for the worst thing you ever did. As Dan Gilbert flew in a private plane to meet LeBron James last Sunday, he made notes about things to say, things he had been thinking about for four years, since the night James announced on national TV he was leaving Gilbert's Cleveland Cavaliers and taking "my talents to South Beach" and the Miami Heat.
